DIY Hakko + SSV Heater Cover

Nope none have. Still waiting for someone to do it...if you find wands at ~20$ a piece you'll have 4 tries before you break the price point. And I'm betting in 4 tries you won't find one that works. But I'm still waiting to be proved wrong. Durden had a friend that tried for awhile and ended up buying one because he couldn't duplicate the results. If you can more power to ya. :2c:

ok so i ordered one of these to use with either a DBV or SSV heater cover.

60W w/ ceramic heater. temp is 200 - 450C.

i will be trying a DBV heater cover first as i have an extra on-hand. however i believe the regular SSV heater cover will provide better results in most situations.

ill post pics and results after i get it and rip it.

it says it's ceramic but I wanna see it also.

dont waste your time

so this is the iron i was going to use. i chose it because of its heater being ceramic and its temp controlled from 200-450deg.

what a waste. i took it apart and the ceramic portion of the element is only about a half inch in length. and on top of that i had it plugged in heating up for a half an hour and it was putting out 0 heat so i assume its a dud. i should have known though buyin such a POS iron.

that brings me to this iron.
http://www.hakkousa.com/detail.asp?CID=70,290&PID=1178&Page=1

it fits the specs (higher wattage though), but isnt adjustable. i would have to include a dimmer dial somewhere on it... maybe inline with the cord... not sure if that will work though...?

here you can see and purchase all the different parts including just the ceramic heater itself. they also have a replacement heater on there that is already soldered onto the PCB. you could buy that and make a vape of any shape and size. anyway, here check out the parts page.

im going to give this hakko a go and post results when finished.

I would like to build one of these as well, just seems easier to use with glass then a SSV whip, but I live in 220V land and I don't think we have any Hakko's here.

I did find a brand here called HQ that makes a reasonably priced digital and analogue solder station which uses this 48W ceramic heating element:

28374.jpg

edit: the element is 5mm in diameter and 8cm in lenght

This is the digital version of the station, the HQ solder 30:

Of course I would prefer something with a black handle, but do you guys think this Iron could work as well as the Hakko?

they started posting in the homemade thread - you may find more info there

http://www.fuckcombustion.com//viewtopic.php?id=121

one of the attractions of the hakko is they have several models which are rohs compliant, including the 456-16 which I have, and that it comes with a stainless steel tube which can double as the heater cover eliminating the need for a glass heater cover.

I would love to just order one from e-bay, but I'm not sure how to get around the voltage problem.
The more I look in to the HQ's though, the more I get the idea that these are not that all that different from your Hakko's.

They also come with a tube as well by the looks of this picture that a local reseller posted:

Thanks for the link though, guess I'll better read that thread first. I can't imagine I am the first European to build one of these.

i'd stay with rohs compliant stuff, not that it protects you, but the bad stuff i think can do bad things quickly, I think.

(sorry i'm from the department of redundancy department)

I can't find anything about HQ solder 30 being rohs compliant, just my two cents, i would look for another brand.

I would like to, but to be honest you guys just got lucky the iron you use is in fact RoHS compliant from what I've gathered

Thanks for your concern, but since there won't be anything but the heating element and the SSV heater cover in the direct air path I decided to make things a little easier for myself and I won't worry to much about that part.

I just found this 220v Aoyue 936 which uses the same ceramic heater as the Hakko 936, would that be a better choice perhaps? I kinda have my doubts about the 200C starting temp.

edit: it's only 35W and it seems to be a re branded Hakko.

edit again: Never mind guys, I just found Revvy's post in the other DIY thread.

@OhTheAgony what other DIY thread? Linky pls :) How did you get on with the Aoyue 936 and how did ou find out it had the same element as the Hakko btw?

also are ceramic elements the same and safe ? As I have found a cheap ceramic core iron in UK and thought at that price i should have a look

I tried but either this website or my browser is slow as f*ck today and I can not find it. It is/was a thread about DIY vaporizers, I'm sure one of the other guys remembers the actual name to make the search easier.

I still did not build my own Hakko/solder iron vap. I'm still not sure which iron to use and I haver other priorities atm to work on. But my experience with my SSV have learned me that it is important that the heater element is raised as high as possible inside the heater cover for a good result, so I'll probably won't be using a 936 with it's shorter heater element. To bad though, I found some really nice decals for it on e-bay :brow:

That's a very general question you ask about items that can vary a lot in quality and construction, but overall the use of ceramic heaters is considered safe here on FC I believe.

I can't find anything about what's used in the iron you linked unfortunately. I just use google myself. Looking for spare parts for the model you're investigating can help you understand it better. Just type in anything you know about it, product nr's, serial nr's etc. I often use the photo search mode to speed up the process since I'm a very visual person. Sometimes you have to find out that what you're investigating is a re-branded model first before you can go after the original sources, just be creative.

Good luck anyways, and please report back if you find something usable.

edit: if you look at the top of this page VWFringe posted a link there to the other DIY yourself thread :ko:

013-767 : HEAT ELEMENT, ULTRA-WAXER, LONG $40.95

don't know how many watts, but looks small enough for a portable vape

EDIT: sorry, thought this was the homemade thread. vaked again, and am not thinking cost, just havent seen little ones

Thats a lot of money for a little heating element! Why do you think this is god for a portable vape? If these were 12v they may be good for a 12v heat wand type vape but it doesnt say whay voltage they are. I would guess they are 24v like the soldering stations as they look very similar.

hey Fringe... did you get any use out of those pics i sent you?

for the sake of the thread my opinion is that the Hakko 556 SE is the best iron for making a portable vape. its heat up time and heat retention destroy any vape ive ever tried. its all controlled from the iron so no need for a dimmer or soldering station. works lovely in my vehicle. i leave it on for hours at a time and its still vapes like a champ.

they are still available on tracys workshop: http://www.tracysworkshop.com/pc-19649-7300-hakko-556-se-temperature-control-soldering-iron.aspx , but appear to have gone up $15 since i bought mine. i have spoken with Hakko about them and they are currently designing a permanent replacement model for the 556 SE as it was originally only available in Japan.

my 556SE heater just shit the bed... went up in a poof. there is a little crack on it, but it will not heat anymore. the iron itself is still working so the heater needs to be replaced. replacement heaters for the hakkos are usually about $10-15 a piece.

im off to find a place to find the replacement heaters.

*EDIT* heater was replaced the other day. i had to go out and buy a $10 radio shack soldering iron to repair my hakko. anyway, the replacement heater for the hakko 556SE is any of the "MACH" replacement heaters, but you have to trim the leads a bit before soldering. the 456 is much easier to replace a heater on. they are plug and play. the 556SE is a solder job. it was my first and im not sure its a great solder job, but its working so we will see. it will be exciting to see what Hakko is going to replace the 556SE with.

how do you think this compares to the heat iron with vapor attachment?

Can get this for $65 + tax here in town. :)

Was thinking of pairing with an Arizer Extreme whip kit for $23, and heat cover for $25.. plus tax.. and shipping. A few shops in town might carry them, but it may be cheaper online.. even with shipping :p.

As for a fan.. I was considering an adjustable pump instead..

Fusion Air Pump (Model 700)

FusionAirPumpModel700.jpg

$25.95 CDN

The Fusion quiet power aquarium air pump uses a patented baffle system that allows for virtual silence while not compromising power.

Select models allow you to control the flow of air with a simple turn of the dial.

It provides ample power to supply your accessories, while running whisper quiet.

Also, just wanted to mention.. if you have an r/c plane and boat hobby shop in town, they "should" have some stainless steel tubing of various diameters. You might be able to modify a custom fitting for the glass.. instead of silicone tubing. Especially if you also use a bit of heat shield cloth between the tube and the glass.

special like everyone else
Necro time, only because the models that are generally recommended (Hakko 456, 556) are discontinued now, and there are more cheap options that appear to be good candidates for modding but there aren't even pictures available without their heat covers. It just occurred to me I need to sleep... links and one or two questions in an upcoming edit...

Check this thread:
http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-lazyvape.11511/

I use the same heater except it is 110V
Takes a while to heat up, 10 minutes, but once to temp it blasts good vapor!

My projects have kind of ground to a halt thanks to Herbie and EVO...
i do have some more parts on the way to complete a log vape though!
More to come in the coming weeks!

It's actually a 25w iron from radioshack, full power seems to work fine with how it's positioned for some reason
