How do you vape in public?

Like many of you I’ve been following the Ascent thread, and I’m ready to cut the cord & get my first portable vape. But having no experience with a portable in a city where there were 39,218 arrests for MJ possession in 2012 (down from 50,000 in 2011!) I don’t want to be foolish & add myself to those statistics. So before I hit the street I’d like to get some advise.

How discreet are you be while vaping in public? Obviously the setting makes a difference. At a crowded concert or in a park? Probably not a problem. How about at an MLB-baseball or NFL-football game? Would you take it to a bathroom stall or just vape in your seat? In a car should be ok, but here in NYC we tend to walk or bike, so we’re out in the open. I don’t want to be stupid or unrealistic, thinking that because I’m not smoking I won’t be noticed.

So, do you have any tips for vaping in public places?

Can you share some of your experiences, either successful or not. Any rules of thumb, cautions, do’s or don’ts?

I think riding or walking would be ok in NY but saying that it does depend on your color and neighborhood. It will also depend on the precinct area you are in at the moment. Also keep in mind that they can stop and frisk for zero reason in NY which I hope changes soon as it is just wrong. Always be careful and alert.

I heard it was only partially overturned. Check into it. I saw it on the news this week and they said that they can still do it but it can't be as rampid which means they can do wtf they want. Do you have the writting of the overturn?

Stop and frisk has been modified but continues in NY.
Anywhere outdoors I can hit the LB natively, hold that toke
and exhale with no one aware. The cops are familiar with
portable vapes, but the lack of smell and the quickness of the
LB makes me feel safe. Just try to be super aware of your
surroundings and don't look like you are trying to be sneaky.
Most public restrooms are cool as long as the feds aren't
in the neighboring stall.

Ive been walking around a few places that I would never even attempt to vape, using a pen oil vape people just assume it's an ecig. I had to pass a security gaurd/metal detector at a zoo and THEY said "Oh thats one of them electric cigarette." :) Im sure they was looking for weapons but...

I've vaped in the city before plenty of dark alleys to head into for a quick hit. My advice is keep moving take a hit, and keep moving. In the city everyone is always moving (as you know) the second you stand still you look out of place and people start to look at you.

I hold my hands up to my mouth with my MFLB and act like im breathing into my hands (works great in the winter). I believe SLIM did some vaping in public while he saw a show. He said no one minded, but he also has the ascent. I'm using a Launch box.

I also, CONSTANTLY vape in bathroom stalls. Once again I never linger too long for a two reasons.

1.) I'm smart I'm not trying to get into any trouble.
2.) The smell if I'm gone before anyone notices then its not a big deal. (also, its not weird for a bathroom to smell funny)

Never vaped in a stadium, never really took the risk I wouldn't want to buy tickets and get turned away at the gate. Good luck and stay smart vaping in public is risky!

The way they reported the Stop & Frisk decision here was that a federal judge found that S&F is unconstitutional - but she didn't order it stopped. She appointed a panel to look into the practice & make recommendations. But if it's unconstitutional- shouldn't it be stopped immediately? I guess constitutional rights aren't what they used to be.

On another note, there's a mayoral race here -to replace Bloomburg, & one of the candidates , John Liu [who's trailing badly in the race] proposed legalizing marijuana. Even though, I'm pretty sure, that decision could only be made in Albany, on the state level.

That is what I thought I heard about the law so I suspect it will stay as is. Are you saying people don't walk around smoking joints anymore if not wow. Bloomberg is such a dick or should I say bully and control freak.

No people don't smoke openly. Not anymore. In the 1980's it was more wide open but Giuliani cracked down with a zero tolerance policy & Bloomberg has continued in that vein.
And -Bloomberg isn't a total jerk, he's actually pretty forward looking in many areas.

Wow that kind of sucks cause it was suppose to get legalized for mmj and it has been decriminalized for years. Now they are cracking down for no reason...sounds reasonable. I hope you are allowed to still smoke in your house/apt. In the past if you got caught it was just a bs desk ticket. Makes me not want to come to NY damn.

I use the Inhalater XP in public as if I was using an e-cig. I think I have an advantage in that because I live in Ireland, where vapes are not common knowledge, everyone will just assume it's an e-cig. I've did it on crowded buses numerous times although I'll keep it a lower setting just to avoid clouds where I can. Never really got any lingering suspicious looks bar the "what kind of device is that" glance.

I was going into a festival recently here and I was expected to be frisked so had a little story for the vape if questioned by security. However I just got the metal detector ran over me and interestingly enough it didn't pick up on the Inhalater XP at all. I was surprised as I thought there'd be at least some metal in it. I'm not sure if they have more thorough types of metal detectors in airports, they probably do, but thought it was interesting that it didn't pick up on it at all.

In good French, I love also wine and absinth !..... but I never go out with my bottle in hand !!
I only drink in my house, or in friend's houses.... I do the same for vaping ;)
I don't know if you know this sentence : "Pour vivre heureux, vivons cachés !" (To live happy, live hidden!) ;):myday:

The best way to proceed is simply just not to annoy people and be casual. Don't do it around kids/old people. If someone shoots you a dirty look, smile and keep it moving. In a public setting the only people I ever really notice smoking or vaping are the ones making unusual movements with their bodies in a attempt to hide what they are doing. The "full duck-down" in a car has got to be the biggest tell, even at some distance.

This is good advise & I generally try to 'vivons cachés'. But sometimes it's fun & exciting to get outside and push the boundaries. With some caution.

What is the general attitude about marijuana use in France these days? Are the penalties for possession severe or lenient?

I don't know much about this because we haven't TV at home (it's our choice), but I know that there is many people who smokes in France (generally very bad hash). Vaporization is almost unknow here !
The penalties depends of so much things !.... but generally, justice takes your money !!! (the jails are so full in France !). I think that it depends of each person, not the country and the law... long time ago, when I was youngest :myday::) and when I smoked, I use to did it with policemen  !!!:lol:

I've vaped in my seat at baseball games with my Iolite and MFLB, inside movie theaters, at concerts, etc. its not a big deal in the Bay Area.

I guess there are a few variables here. The main one being the Bay Area, seemingly a much more tolerant region than my hometown. Actually, most folks here, I think, are tolerant. It's the police who go overboard.
The other is the size/shape of the vape. I'm not too familiar with the MFLB & the Iolite, but they're both compact, aren't they? Easier to conceal. I'll probably end up with an Ascent which, while not gigantic, seems to be fairly large. I guess only time will tell how discreet the Ascent will be. A while back in the Ascent thread, someone suggested placing the Ascent in a large soda cup & vaping out of the 'straw'.

I'm waiting for the Ascent as well, but for now I have my MFLB. Kinda fiddly to use in public, but I've done it several times (water park, theme park, just walking around, etc.). I usually just ghost hit or exhale into my sleeve so no vapor is visible. I haven't ever done it inside in a public place, as I feel it can still be smelled pretty easily and I live in a backwards-ass state where there aren't too many cannabis users, so I don't want to risk it.
