Has anyone struggled with giving up smoking cigarettes?

It really is amazing the lengths that one will go to, to rationalize their continued use of their drug of choice. If you're going to be using a drug, be it for recreation, or for medical reasons, then at least go in with your eyes wide open to the pros and the cons of such use so you can make an informed decision rather than to come up with some cockamamie rational that the particular drug is totally harmless.

.. or that the particular users habit is under control.

you see all sorts of different people doing the exact same shit. makes me wonder if they're truly blind to it or just making it appear so out of shame.

I used to use snuff tobacco, the kind you put in your nose, not your mouth! The kick was fantastic, about as hard as your first nicotine rush with awesome fragrance and with the bonus of having people think you're doing blow off the back of your hand in public ;)

Nicotine is pretty harmless

WHAT ???????????????????? ITS ONE OF THE MOST WIDLEY USED PESTICIDES FOR HOME AND YARD , GO AHEAD AND CHECK IT OUT . ONE OF THE MOST TOXIC TO HUMANS AND WILDLIFE .

EDIT: Nicotine Sulfate (same as nicotine which we put in our body when we use tobacco ) will be BANNED in 2014 in the U.S.A. !

Maybe you do know about addiction,. I see you have a 8,000 post to this forum in in approx 1600 days that is about 5 per day, you may be addicted to this forum. lol.

In comparison I'm at 1.5 post per day

I'm a nic addict, gimme the juice!

It's that classic word that comes up anytime addiction is discussed and that word is...........denial.

I smoked for 25 years. The only thing that worked for me was Chantix. It gave me mild nausea for 5-10 minutes after taking the pill, and my dreams were Epically Undescribeable as vivid dreaming is one of the side effects. I used it for 3 months. Everytime I would light up after the first week I would get a weird sick feeling that made me not WANT to smoke. 1 yr later I am still smoke free. But, you really have to WANT to quit. Good Luck.

I hear chantrix tends to promote sucidal thoughts, you ever think of hurting yourself either before during or after taking it?

Ok more of my nicotine addiction story. I smoked from 16 to 43 I am 45 now

I stopped for 2.5 years using the patch for 90 days, then went right back to 2 packs a day or of the blue one day.

Quit again for 1 year with e cigs then back smoking for 1.5 years

Now a little over 1.5 years off them again using ecigs.

I like nicotine, I like vaping. Quitting all together is fine but it you can't do that using something like an ecig makes sense to me.

harm reduction had its place in addiction therapy

Totally agree. Harm reduction does have a place in addiction therapy, but, and this is an important but..........harm reduction can impede the process of total abstinence. This process is different for each and every one of us. One size does not fit all. My whole argument was that if you going to be doing a drug, any drug, that you should acknowledge the pro's AND the con's without deluding yourself into thinking that ANY drug is totally harmless, for that is the only way that anyone can evaluate the risk/reward ratio in making a decision to partake.

When I took Chantix, I was in a deep depressed state before taking them. I didn't tell the DR., I already kind of wished I were dead, but I'm not able to off myself because it would cause too much pain to my family. So, I was already boarderline suicidal, but the chantix didn't make it worse. I'm sure it's different for everyone. After I went off Chantix nothing changed in that area. I was a little less depressed because I had stopped smoking and that made my wife VERY happy. MMJ saved my life!

I used e-cigs too, but my DR. told me that it
is healthier than burning a regular cig because there is none of the toxins, BUT that nicotine was still harmful.

I bought my usual 2 packs a day(for 30 years) on a thursday in sept. 2009 and when in the pharmacy i spotted some nicotinegum, there on the spot decided, they were gonna be my last cigarettes ever,so i spread these out over the next four days.
After which over the following 2 days i used 6 nicotine gums to relieve some fyscical withdrawal-symptoms.
This had been fermenting for a while already and for some reason that day i'd had enough(of the costs or negative healthbenefits, probably good deal of both).
Although giving up the booze and the coke was a lot easier than this,it wasn't nearly as bad for me as i'd feared.
The only time i,to my utmost horror, found myselves holding a lit cigarette since was in a dream and even there i quickly realised 'this is wrong'and put it out with the proper disgust.:D
Big part for me that made me stick it out were the quickly apparent improvements in overall health and also the return of long lost smelling and tasting abilities.
Focusing on the plusses can help a huge amount,or at least it did for me(having the willpower to quit is a good one, takes your pride back a bit after being it's slave for only 30 years...).
If you're not convinced about the health risks of any type of tobacco usage, think of the money you'll save!
I was up to about 3800,-euro a year...:bang:

So not smelling like an ashtray(never fully appreciated just how bad that is until i quit myself),living longer and better with more money...it really should be a no-brainer.
Just how many people still keep doing it,i'd say best illustrates the addictiveness of smoking in itself.:\

Everebody thinking about quitting, please do,i highly recommend it!

I walk around smelling like a bag of cannabis (at least not a burn one since quitting combustion ) and spend upwards of 7-8 thousand a year on cannabis and cannabis related accessories.

I think it's worth it! (although I can afford it ... if I couldn't I would grow my own like when I was still in school and much younger and didn't have kids and the associated concerns of cannabis and kids and society's negative view thereof)

For me once a cig smoker your brain is rewired... and there's evidence to say it is very difficult to then give it up. For me harm reduction methods like snus and ecigarettes makes sense.

How 'bout using harm reduction methods as a stepping stone to total abstinence?

Trading one bad thing for another(oke, maybe a bit less bad) thing, when it is possible(not easy no,but in the end it is all just down to willpower of course) to do completely without isn't something i'd ever recommend.
All steps towards ending dependencies are good, but they should always be just temporary IMO.

Mmm... not quite. Nicotine in and of itself isn't nearly as addictive as people make it out to be. Incredibly potent in incredibly small concentrations, sure, but not that addictive. I was smoking a pack a day of Luckies (unfiltered, all we get in America), Camel Menthols, American Spirits, and then American Spirit rolling tobacco. The thing about tobacco is that when it's burned it also releases chemicals called MAOI's. The nicotine is the buzz you feel from smoking tobacco, and the MAOI's are that deeper satisfaction you get. That's also part of why ecigs don't feel quite the same as a regular cigarette, because juices don't include MAOI's or full-spectrum tobacco tinctures by default.

Opiates on the other hand ruin you way faster than tobacco. That kinda forces you to quit, I'd say.
It's quite addictive, that's a fact. Is it as addictive or more addictive than opiates...well as I stated before I can't really speak on that. I was simply relating anecdotal info that I have come across...to make a point. Quitting tobacco after forming a habit is generally very difficult for most...let's not argue that point. I know ex-addicts (crack/heroin/pills) who say nicotine is the hardest to kick. This is anecdotal, not scientific.

I still have nicotine cravings and I haven't smoked a cig in years...just saying. Everyone is different. SO maybe it is easy for you to go from a pack a day to none, but that's simply not true for most. In fact, it is often recommended to ween yourself off nicotine, just as one might do with opiates...

peace
