Vaping to fall back asleep

I'm still waking up once (about 2-3am), and vaping to get back to sleep. It is better, though, and I wake up less often, now that my ND has me on some supplements to correct my hormone levels.

I havnt been sleeping good lately, so one night I did try to vape, for some reason I couldn't fall asleep ( actually, I was really excited cause I was getting off of house arrest the next day) but the vape didn't help. I guess the brain can be a little too powerful sometimes

On nights where I need to fall asleep, I am really enjoying this stuff. Sleepytime Extra
I typically vape in addition to it but don't know if that's even necessary.

Unlike regular sleepytime, this version has Valerian Root

That and a couple of stems of INDICA is better than AMBEIN C:

Reading this thread we can see how unique each individual is when it comes to sleep, and what helps. Most THC lightweights will drift off to sleep with a strong edible, but a few, I've seen it happen, will be up all night if eaten late.

Nothing really gives me, a hopeless insomniac, a good night's sleep anymore, except maybe a good day's exercise. I just can't sustain REM for long, but cannabis definitely helps, and it helps a lot, and a lot of it helps even more. :)

Harsh chemical barbs and tranqs and alcohol are about the WORST things for sleep-related problems, for me and everyone else. Fuck Lunesta and that corporate bathtub swill - damn near anybody can smoke or eat themselves to sleep rather safely with cannabis. Gilligan's Island reruns also work pretty good when available.

Those are classic.
FURTURAMA after a INDICA Session helps me sleep.

Sleeping pills would make me sleep walk and then I would fall on the stone floor.
Cannabis is much healthier and safe way to medicate.
In fact I have insomnia at this minute.
Time for some of this:
God's Gift (above or Girl Scout Cookies below):

Hell yes. Always treat insomnia with something natural, like cannabis, or diet changes and exercise. Never treat it with drugs like benzo's or barbituates. They are like putting a dirty band-aid on a cut. They won't cure anything. They will only mask your problems while making them worse. I didn't get the sense that you had a problem with those drugs from your post but it's obvious that I'm speaking from experience and just thought I'd share my thoughts in case somebody read this and it changed their mind.

There are so many drugs out there that doctors will precribe that will harm a person in so many ways and should be avoided at all costs. The worst days of my life were the days when I was withdrawing from xanax. I couldn't sleep for 4-5 days which would make most people hallucinate, and I was no exception. I have no personal history or family history of mental illness or drug abuse at all but I ended up having these very strange delusions and hallucinations that peaked for roughly the last 30 hours. At that point there was no falling asleep. It was terrifying. I ended up calling 911 at 2:30 in the morning and told them that my house just got robbed by a biker gang, because I thought that it did. The police came (no ambulance came because they really thought my house got robbed ) and convinced me to let my parents take me to the hospital. I went to the ER for 7 hours and then a mental hospital for an "evaluation". Yes,, a fucking mental hospital. Nobody actually knows about all of this excepct my parents,, and you guys now.lol At the time nobody knew what my problem was and thought maybe I took something because I didn't tell anybody that I had been awake for so long. I rememeber them even asking me that specific question and for some reason I kept lying and said I had slept the night before. They only evaluated me there for about 30 minutes and let me go. I knew what was going on and where I was at but was still having some HARDCORE hallucinations in that place. I remember them vividly and they are terrifying. I wanted to leave that place so (somehow) I kept telling them what they wanted to hear. I was still under the robbery took place but they released me and thank god they did. That place was exactley like your probably picturing it. Long white hallways with tiny rooms on each side,,, doors wide open with crazy people looking out at you. They gave me xanax to fall aleep when I got home and I did. I was completely back to normal when I awoke 7 hours later, even though I remembered everything. This was a long ass post but like I said, I've never told anybody about this. The only reason my parents know is because I live with them so they witnessed what I went through that day.

This happened late last year and my physical and mental health has improved 1,000,000 X since then. The thing about it that angers me the most is actually the doctor that gave me those pills for more than 2.5 years. It's recommended that they should not be used for more than 3 months because they will lose their effectiveness and the user has a chance of dependence but my doctor didn't give a shit. I know I was the one putting them in my mouth but it took me awhile to realize my dependence for them. And my doctor didn't realize I had a dependence for them until I actually told him. He had me on like 3 or 4 mg of zanax a day, and that was just for the day. He would prescribe me Ambien for night! Since then I've found a good doctor who's smart, listens, and cares and I credit him a lot for helping me get better. Maybe I won't be so ashamed to share my experience about this in the future as long as I keep improving. It felt good just to write it out this time. Thanks to anybody who bothered to read this long post.

A doctor had you on benzos for TWO AND A HALF YEARS!?!?!?! What a quack, forget losing his license, he should be forced to take them for 2 years himself then we'll take away his entire stash. What a horrible story, glad to hear you are doing much better.

The right strain of GPD and many other INDICAS do the trick for me.

Very interesting thread with much to explore. It made me think of this:

Without pot, my insomnia is so bad I would turn to alcohol and pills, as I have in the past when cannabis wasn't available (no longer a problem: love you, California and Prop 19). That in itself is grist for an entire thread. Turning people with sleep problems into greater zombies with chemical junk largely because of cannabis prohibition.

Frankly, we have been poisoning people with sleeping pills for a long time, and turned it into a mufti-billion dollar business. Just like depression, and largely invented bullshit like ADHD.

A crack dealer is a crack dealer whether he dresses like a thug or a pharmaceutical executive. The only difference between a "bathtub meth lab" and a shiny FDA-approved Phizer/Merk "pharmaceutical research and manufacturing facility" is the status of one's social class.

As George Carlin said, "It's all bullshit and it's bad for ya, folks."

Also, vaping, as opposed to smoking, lends itself so comfortably to middle-of-the-night ups and downs, and just think how much safer it is to vape in bed - than to smoke in bed! Fuck my wife would kill me, flat out.

Pot is simply a wonder drug for me as far as sleep goes. And for an old fuck :myday: , so many other little annoyances associated with old age. Not a fool-proof cure, and sometimes it doesn't work too well at all, but it is ALWAYS fun trying.

Well written!

I had to get a late on set autoimmune condition. (SCA)
Doctors from HARVARD and UCLA were giving me all kinds of drugs?
For years respecting the laws of the land I had to refrain from CANNABIS.
THANK GOD for a more natural way to deal with our conditions.
At 54 I live a strict holistic life style and CANNABIS (VAPORIZING) is apart of the program.
I can manage my ATAXIA with CANNABIS.

I believe society has demonized CANNABIS for way too long!

Pot's been a wonder drug for me too. I actually live in Michigan (not Blowhio) where I'm legal so that's been awesome. We get some really good bud here in Southeast Michigan. Not on par with Cali or Colorado, but good. Detroit has all the dispensaries around here but when I have the time I like taking a drive out to Ann Arbor. That's where you'll find the best quality in all of Michigan. I've been medicating well before it was legal (back in the day!) so now that I can add vaporizing to that fact I buy weed in a store, I feel like I'm in the future sometimes!

And thanks for the replies, goatgobahh and Olympus Mons. I actually thought about filing a lawsuit, especially since my brother is a lawyer, but was told it wouldn't be worth it. It was clearly a case of negligence though. I'm pretty spiteful towards that doctor but glad I have an awesome one now. When I told him about my history with the previous doctor he was pretty apalled.

Those pills really fucked me up for a long 2 years. They're like poison in a bottle. I haven't been telling people about what happened to me, I just tell them to avoid putting their blind trust into someone just because they're a doctor. That's the mistake I made. There's such a small percentage of people who should actually take those drugs, and only for a SHORT period of time (war veterans come to mind), but yet they're so widely prescribed. You almost gotta go to detox when you come off that shit. I mean I was FUUUCKED up. You're supposed to taper down but I didn't. I heard a taper is bad too but going cold turkey after 2.5 years would cause insomnia for anybody. And insomnia will eventually cause hallucinations and blah blah blah. See, I still try to make it seem that what happened to me would've happened to any normal person.lol.

Anyway, I stopped using mmj late last year when all of this happened to me because I had lost my job so I was a little short on cash flow, and also probably because I was on the xanax and ambien. I also lost weight like a fucking crackhead over those 2 years. I've put on a nice 15 lbs since then and am back to my normal weight of 145-150. And the craziest part of my story is that I left I left the craziest parts out! I had delusion after delusion, and they were all confirmed by audio and visual hallucinations. And NO,,,,,,, IT WASN'T COOL!

I had one where I thought that Deon Sanders and some 20 underprivileged afro-american children kept knocking on my door trying to solicit money from me for a donation... in exchange for ice cream. And this was late in December,,, in Michigan,,, (COLD AS FUCK!) and I kept yelling through the door that I didn't want any ice cream but they wouldn't leave and even called the local newspapers to come cover the story, and they came!!!. lol. This lasted for about 3 hours until my parents came home from dinner. I had many of those strange delusions throughout the last 30 hours of staying awake but when I thought (AND HEARD AND SEEN) 25 bikers storm my house I did what any person would've done if they seen that; call 911!

I've always been an anxious person so that probably made everything worse. Xanax is supossed to aleve anxiety yet it will make it so much worse if taken long term. So much worse. Same with Ambien. It's supposed to help you sleep but your brain will build this nasty, fast-acting tolerance to it and just DARE YOU to keep taking it. When you do, you won't sleep as good every time. Jusssssst by a little,,, and so on, and so on. Then when you realize that the 1 pill your doc recommended doesn't cut it, you have 2 choices: take 2, or don't take any. If you don't take any, you won't fall asleep, and if you take 2..... well, you can expect "Neon Deon" to come-a-knockin on your door in a year or two.

Good to hear your story, Hoof. Many of your experiences parallel my own. I trust doctors so little - fucking shrinks are the biggest assholes - I have seen them only once or twice in the past 10, 15 years. Every damn one I've ever had was certainly no objective scientist, and had his or her own personal agenda and fucked up beliefs about medicine, cannabis most of all. Bunch of assholes with a degree, for the most part. Tools of the pharm industry, mostly.

And as for the delusions, such bad trip reports abound all over the web about people being sent to the dark side of the moon on Ambien and similar crap. "Non-habbit-forming" does not = safe.

Hey, don't knock your local buds, I'm sure they are every bit as fine as what we have here in Cali. Great pot is more readily available today than it ever was.

I agree, vape just helps me GET to sleep.

When I lie down to go to sleep sober and my body starts to relax, my mind goes absolutely insane I'll just lie in bed thinking about anything. I'll start thinking about a new workout regiment, the essay I have due in 4 weeks, the next MMA fights, etc. Vaping will just knock me out till the morning and I love it.

Wow this thread is doing my head in. I seem to be the exact opposite to most - I cannot sleep after vaping herb, not for many many hours as my mind is racing. Low temps and Sativa dominant and I can't sleep for 12+ hours. Even high temps 220-240c get me wired, and smoking rarely did.

For me vaping herb is now strictly a daytime coffee style of use, which really sucks. I expect high CBD will do the trick, but haven't had the opportunity yet.

Hey VapeHead, I can see that with the sativa dominant, but not indica especially high temp but everyone is different. Personally, I could vape a sativa at night at higher temp and sleep like a baby. However, I need to tread carefully because like sleeping pills, I can become too dependent on cannabis for sleeping and then not be able to sleep without them. Someone mentioned not being able to sleep for 4-5 nights, and that's exactly what happens to me. It's actually forced me to moderate and although I do find I sleep waaaaay better when vaped, I think I feel better and not "mentally foggy" when I fall asleep sober.

It's been shown that cannabis increases deep slow wave sleep, and actually decreases REM sleep. Now I use cannabis medically more like a sleeping pill, and only use it when I really need to. But I won't lie, there is some recreational use in there too.

A good dose of high CBD oil in an edible always = zzzzz for me, and good thing because I am a hard core insomniac. Smoking indicas is more sedating than vaping them. Sativas work great for daytime head.

But so much bud has been crossed and hybridized, so much is breeders' and retailers' hype, only way to know for sure, if we're talking "medicine," is lab testing. And many dispensaries offer it, problem is they run out of batches so fast it's hard to get test results fast enough to keep up.

Cardinal Rule is Everyone Is Different. Experimenting to find out what works for you with cannabis is fun and pretty safe. How many people still OD on sleeping pills? Last person I know who OD'd from using cannabis as a sleeping aid was miraculously reincarnated the next morning, jumpy as Jesus.

I have had a relationship between mj and sleep for many many years now. I was an insomniac as a child, staying up all night reading under the covers with a flashlight and then never wanting to get up and go to school. I noticed in high school that mj helped me get to sleep and have been relying on it ever since then for the most part, we're talking decades here.

Because of my health issues I currently take aspirin and flexeril on a regular basis, but I am able keep those to to a minimum if I'm vaping. Sometimes I need stronger painkillers, and I do eat a lot of supplements as well as anti-fungals which are my only other script.

I have tried many many things prescribed illegal and natural, and mj has always put me to sleep the most consistently, and also works the best for going back to sleep when I inevitably wake up in the middle of the night. If I eat the muscle relaxer before dinner I am fine in the am but if I take it later it has quite the half life. The only time mj makes me slow in the am is when I w&b.

I am looking forward to reclaiming my avb in the interest of eliminating more flexeril in favor of yummy treats; I just started saving it up and my magical butter machine should arrive tomorrow. This is an awesome forum, and I am very glad to have found it so cheers to all of you:luv:

I did want to post something regarding sleep that I read recently; evidence is being unearthed that tells us before modern electricity people slept in shifts, and a "second sleep" was quite common, with a big awake break in between. I have gone with it a couple of times and it's quite interesting, and it feels quite natural.

It's a really good time to catch up on a movie (with headphones on!), or important fc reading:nod:

Basically the idea is that we didn't evolve to sleep through the night, that is a more modern development, which is at least one reason why insomnia is so prevalent.

Here's a snippet of Dr. Mercola: The Myth of the Eight-Hour Sleep:

"A growing body of evidence, garnered from both science and history, suggests the eight-hour sleep cycle may not be the most natural arrangement for humans after all.
One experiment conducted in the 1990s, for example, seemed to indicate that when completely left to their own devices, people would sleep for four hours, then wake for one or two hours before falling into a second four-hour sleep.
More recently, historians have uncovered a wealth of historical evidence that humans in fact used to sleep in two distinct segments.
Evidence includes diaries, court records, medical books and literature, in which these two sleep cycles are referred to in such a way as to make it clear that it was common knowledge at the time.
According to the BBC Newsi:
"... [R]eferences to the first and second sleep started to disappear during the late 17th Century. In 1667, Paris became the first city in the world to light its streets... y the end of the century, more than 50 of Europe's major towns and cities were lit at night.
Night became fashionable and spending hours lying in bed was considered a waste of time.... By the 1920s the idea of a first and second sleep had receded entirely from our social consciousness."

Excellent post, totally grok it, just want to quote that one nutshell. Can't sleep more than 3 or 4 hrs at a time, in fact I had this 2-hour block of wakefulness last night between two short sleep sessions. I'd go nuts if not for reruns of Family Guy. Of course now that I'm old I gotta get up to pee more often anyway. Unfortunately, the way most people sleep is tailored to their jobs. Personally used to love the night shift. Really zombified a few of my friends, though, some can really lose it.

Waking up for awhile is okay, as long as you are not subjecting yourself to "blue light"... i.e., artificial sunlight. That will fuck up the circadian rhythm, and elevate stress levels. If you do wake up and need to spend some time before going back to bed, I would recommend blue-light-blocking glasses (about $5 on Amazon), and/or "f.lux" installed on your PC/laptop. Don't turn on bright lights if you can help it... our ancestors would wake up in the "night watches", but they used a candle or oil lamp. Those do not emit blue light, and our brains do not perceive them as sunlight.

I use the glasses at night, myself.

I have trouble getting to sleep at night. I'll toss and turn all night long and never used to sleep well. Smoking just before bed helped a little but not enough and sometimes would wake me up even more. I refuse to use pharmaceuticals(ambien, etc)to sleep and I've tried countless home remedies. Since I started using a vape before bed I sleep like a rock!

What are the herbs you are using that help you sleep? I am looking at vaping for my RLS and to help me sleep.
