Again, I don't think this produces wispy hits for small loads.

This is .3 grams in packed in the bottom of the device. I had it set to 410F. No modifications to the bowl, no cotton... just the device.

SM, for me, .3gr is not small. As a matter of fact, for me, a normal size load that got me totally wasted in my PD was a mere .025gr and in my LSV, .05gr to .075gr is all I need. .3gr is six times more than I would ever need for a session.

And I do fully realize that I and a few others are in the minority here when it comes to usage, but still, if it could be addressed rather cheaply by an optional accessory that they could sell at a profit, why not?

If you don't like the cotton idea, maybe you could try simply adding some regular fan leaves from your plant and wrap your bud up in a couple of them (although you'd have to keep & cure them with every grow, along with the bud). Or maybe add some other (neutral tasting) cheap herb into the mix to reduce your usage. After all, it's all about aroma-therapy ;)
Probably won't help with oils though.

I don't feel a need to use cotton with smaller loads. I thought the results were acceptable if you packed the contents down so their was less air between the material...
I have had one wispy session the entire time. I was away from home and did not have a grinder. I broke a very small amount up with my fingers and dropped in the oven. The load was small enough and there was enough air that I did not get overly thick vapor. I did get medicated though. In that instance though I feel like I was not using the device properly. So the fault is in the user and not the device.

So, key is to A) Grind, and B) tamp down?

THR & Sticks -- You guys grinding and tamping? I know sticks at one point tossed a little nug in there, and seemed to feel it was fine. Comments from you two?

You don't need cotton with this unit. At first I was packing lightly and there was too much air. I had just had a conversation with my lhs owner about spacers he is using in the Pax, so that was the first thing that came to mind when I needed to pack it tighter. As is turns out, after talking to SliM and THR, it doesn't need to be full...it just needs to be tightly packed. You could loosely pack a very small load with a spacer like cotton and it still wouldn't work its best...it likes a tight pack. But now we have choices...pack it without cotton and use the reclaim when cleaning your pieces, or use cotton and have a clean unit with no reclaim. But the most commonly used spacer for these types of situations are the oil pads that people are using in the Plenty and now the Pax...I have no idea what they are made of.

This unit happened to get into my hands right when I started doing some modifications for the first time, so that's just the mode I'm in right now. So I'm sorry if my playing around lead some of you to believe it was necessary to enjoy the unit...that couldn't be further from the truth...I have found it to work quite well as intended. I'm just really enjoying playing around with cotton and it's oil applications (I've never used cotton like this before) and will be using it with other vapes as well. I get the apprehension as I had it too a while ago, but Vitolo's been comfy with it for years, and that's good enough for me to play around.

tl;dr -- you don't need cotton...but I am having fun using it!

I would not put any rough metal (liquid pad) in the bowl because the sides are glass. I don't want to risk scratching anything.

Stalked the forums for the last year or so and been watching the Davinci Ascent for the last couple of months here. Thank you so much to THR, SliM, and Sticks for everything they've done with answering everyone's questions. It's been great seeing how they're holding up and you all are liking them more and more. Can't wait until orders open up and we can all get one in our hands.

SliM: How do you thin kthe croc skin is going to hold up? Do you think it will eventually separate off? How about scratches and dents from being in pockets, bags, etc.?

It seems to be glued well I can't see any edges it is all folded and hidden away. I speculate it will last a long time. I am very carful with my portables. I always put them in an empty pocket. Usually a front shirt pocket. Not sure if it would get scratched up being in a pocket with keys. Better safe then sorry.

nigel...yes, grind and tamp.

I started throwing whole buds in there to test something out. Since getting the VAP2 and not having to grind with it, it has been my perception that the bud is more potent before grinding, both in effect and taste. I just seem to get hit well with less herb...and it makes sense given we are beating the shit out of our weed and knocking goodies off of it. that's why kief is so nice. Someone tried it with the Cloud once and liked it. Since this thing has such a nice big bowl it is the perfect unit for me to test it out on. So far, so good. It was nice being at a friend's house and he had some bud. Since I had a piece of cotton in my pocket I didn't bother him for a grinder. That little piece got us both feeling good, whereas I would have killed that myself alone.

Sorry I forgot a 0 in there. I loaded 0.03 grams in there... which is the amount you load and I got that vapor production.

Great. Good to know. One more question. You had it set at 410F. I'm used to getting those kinds of clouds with that amount at 380F. 385 to 390 is tops for me. Could ya do me a favor and post up a vid of that small amount at 380. Thanks a bunch.

Different vapes have different temp readouts. It sounds like people are turning their Ascents up a little higher to get good vapor production. Could it be that 410 on the Ascent is really about <400? Hmm.

Nope. Not in the market for a portable. Just discussing for discussings sake.

No mo cotton from me in this thread.

I don't belie the temperature is off. If it was sub 400F I would notice the difference in the type of medicated state I was getting. The pain relief and sedative effects I feel is in line with what I would expect for 410F-430F temperature range.

Personally, I suspect allot of the other portables actually run hotter then their stated temperatures.

my clouds say it's a little low, but the effect and duff say it is spot on. I think it's right.

I gotta help with dinner, remind me later to talk about he solo and convection...I have something to say.

ok...I'm back and making this a separate post on purpose.

I wanna talk Solo. Everyone wants to compare everything to the Solo because it's a great vape. It's my portable standard because it tastes great, doesn't get hot, and has the thickest hits of any vape like it (I not counting the VG's here...I can milk those puppies). So here's what I think of these two after having this one for a few days.

I like the Ascent better. It tastes better, heats up faster, is smaller with the internal glass stem and has all that digital temp control. And I haven't even touched the programming yet. But the Solo can be had for $90 less, doesn't get as hot and still hits harder. The Solo has more convection going on. the Ascent has more conduction and radiation going on. And that's why the Solo can hit thicker.

Ah, now this is what I asked in the last thread. Good to see you are getting nice cloud from such a small load, though I am used to it with log vapes so the transition should be comfortable.

Do the oil cans fit in the unit upside down? I ask because an oil can with a couple holes in the bottom packed with bud and turned upside down would essentially force it to work very much like the solo wouldn't it?

The wood is simulated. Its a water applied decal I think. The gator skin is also simulated I think, not from a mammal or reptile. There is the vaporpedia ascent page, that has a ton of actual info and specs so far too.

No need to go that far. This very thread's first post has that information straight from the maker (whom I think we can trust to know):

"Croc Skin Pattern Printed Leather with Silver Aluminum Sides"

I take that to be leather printed with a 'gator pattern. "Alligator Calf" is a traditional material used for wallets, watch bands, belts and so on:
http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/99088-344.aspx

My guess is that's what we have here? Real hide from the reptile is very thick and stiff (at least the one I saw was), the printed stuff is split calf hide (like suede; which IIRC is the other half of the split (the cow side not the outside?)).

But......there is a smaller segment of the market that prefer very small loads, and when I mean small, I mean something like around .05gr to .075gr. so for those that desire this, what in the hell would be wrong if they offered up an optional accessory to accomplish this? Not now, of course, but sometime in the near future.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying, but they would have to consider what portion of their customer base would actually want to load .05g or smaller loads. I would think that would be a very small number of users in the vaping community. DV would have to be confident that they would sell enough of the accessory to be worth the time, effort and cost to manufacture....

For me personally, I load about .12-.15g per session. From the useage reports from Slim and Sticks, I'm confident the Ascent will work fine with those size loads if properly packed. However, If our reviewers found that the Ascent did not perform adequately with loads of that size, then I would probably opt to buy a different vape better suited to my needs. That said, I would say there are much better vapes out there for the small portion of Vaporists that like ultra small loads such as .05g Or less . My 2 cents.....

No. The Solo heats the air before it ever hits the bowl, which is only warmed through secondary conduction. It also has a built in air restriction that won't let you pull too hard so your hits are consistently thick without practice.

The Ascent has a bowl primarily heated by conduction/radiation and the convection is secondary. Cooler air is hitting the bowl, so it works best when you let it heat up to a point where it is producing vapor and your draw pulls it out. It has a more open air flow that can allow the user to overwhelm it. Just like the SSV...you need to get your draw speed right for the best hits.
