Why does vaping cause more dry mouth than smoking?

I feel like I get way worse of cottonmouth after a vape sesh than I used too after smoking. I need water during a Buddha sesh and I use low temps or else by the end of the sesh my mouth is so dry. And when I smoke I dont seem to get it so bad. But combustion is obviously a higher temp so how does this make sense? Just curious :D

I have always wondered this too, but I figured its a trade off. Vaporizing is better then smoking in like every way, but it may make your mouth/throat a bit more dry then smoking.

My mouth gets dry in a different way with smoke, my throat almost feels poisoned when I smoke, because of the heat and solid particles.

Yeah no doubt smoking is worse in every way but the only downside to vaping is throat iritation. Maybe its because you are actually inhaling way more. As in several long vapor sucks a sesh versus a few quick puffs of smoke.

No, it cant be that. Look up the definition between VAPOR and SMOKE. Vapor is a gas. Just a gas.

Though smoke contains vapor, vapor does not contain smoke.

Smoke is mostly solid particles, then some gas(vapor). So its very different.

and still wouldnt make a lot of sense since vapor is more efficient, you cant get to the same place by taking a few puffs of smoke as a bunch of long slow vapor rips(at least I cant)

Yes you are right but I was trying to say the amount of time you are inhaling hot air is alot more when vaping than when smoking. Each hit with a vape is usually over 10 seconds of constantly drawing in vapor and hot air. Having a few bong loads is much less time of inhaling.

But I guess there are so many factors to consider. Maybe hitting a pipe would make my mouth just as dry as hittin a whip or the PD and I just dont really remember.

It would feel "dry" in a different way with smoking, compared to vapor.

my mouth does not get more dry with vapor NOW that I vaporize more often then I smoke, also I always keep some drinking water within reach and almost always use a vapor bong with hot water so its less dry.

Sounds like heat/a bit of irritation maybe. A sip of something cool be it tea, water or what have you while vaping makes this a non issue for many.

Vaping through a water bong helps and some people will run their mouthpiece under cold water before vaping as well.

Agree with Beezleb. since incorporating a constant drink and water-pipe into my session, its not really noticeable anymore. You should try this, masbanji.

Oh thank you for the recomendation and help. ;) Although I do use a water pipe with warm water and also drink during sessions, so I no longer have this problem either. I was just so curious if someone had a scientific reason or something to lay down.

I think you hit the nail in the head with your first assessment. When smoking your only applying heat for a short period of time, while vaping you are constantly applying the heat.
Combustion may occur at a higher temp, but for what? one second maybe, and then when you inhale beyond that your reintroducing cold air back into the mix. With vaping the heat is constant. ever notice that vaping dries your lips out pretty fast? I have never gotten dry chapped lips smoking, like the way i do with Vaping.

i have also noticed this and figured it was due to the length of time inhaling...i now fill up a glass of ice water to take sips from during my sessions now.

I had a theory about why vaporizing makes your mouth feel more dry than smoking and also why smoking makes your mouth feel dry.

Vaporizing and smoking both vaporize the plant oil. Smoking uses some of the oil for combustion to heat and vaporize the rest of the material. Vaporizing produces much more vaporized oil than smoking for a given weight.

The vaporized oil adheres to inside of your mouth and throat giving you a feeling of dryness. The more oil you inhale, the more will adhere.

To test my theory I rinsed my mouth with some everclear to see if I could dissolve some of the oil. It significantly improved the dryness in my mouth. It also killed most of the germs in my mouth.

Milk, tea, or coffee during vaping works great too and gets tastier as you go. :brow:

I enjoy a Coffee or a cold beer when I vape. Coffee for the morning or afternoon sessions, and cold beer for night sessions. :peace:

This is a pretty simple one, cottonmouth is caused by a suppression of the Parasympathetic Nervous System.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasympathetic_nervous_system
You will notice from the link that the PSNS controls such actions as salivation and lacrimation (tears). The two basic signs of marijuana intoxication, cotton mouth and red eyes, would easily be explained by this. As to why vaping is worse, probably just a higher concentration of a particular cannabinoid(s) than is provided from combustion.

Any drink that fixes dry mouth just has a countering effect by stimulating salivation, try something bitter or acidic. http://www.dentalgentlecare.com/dry_mouth_2.htm

If this is true, then ingesting should also cause dry mouth.

I have never had dry mouth from ingesting.

Has anyone experienced dry mouth from ingesting?

yes, I have had dry mouth from ingesting(at least, I don't remember irt that clear that I had a dry mouth but I think I had it muost of the times I have ingesed it)
I also have the idea the cottonmouth from smoking is just different, smoking also sedates more so you don't notice as much(when I have a cold vaping dries my troath outt a bit and makesit feel a little bit irritated, smoking sedates it after the initial burning is gone, but half an hour later y throat will feel a lot worse then when I had just stuckto vaping)

It has to do with the chemical in the flavor additive. Propelyn glycol. It's a moisture absorbent.

i have wonder the same things myself, i did read somewhere maybe here, cant remember. about some tests done on terpens, and how we have taste buds that go all the way down our throats or some such.

from what i remember the terpenes are such a good dialator of our taste bud and brochical tubes, that what i imagiane is an almost puckering sort of thing happening in our throats and mouth. that maybe is not experienced as much through smoking because more of the terpenes are destroyed when burnt. and also maybe a numbing effect dont know for sure just some ponderings .
i am currenttly water curing some buds i will be interested to see if this will take away some of the problems with vaping and smoking:)

Are you on the right forum? We're not talking about e-cigs here and it's propylene, not propelyn. It's also not a flavor additive, but used to lower the necessary temp in e-cigs and help as a delivery vehicle.

I smoked mj for 16 years and have been vaping it for the last 2 months.

One of the things I've noticed since making the transition is that vaping is SO much easier on the mouth/throat. I always used to get fairly bad cottonmouth from combusting and I have noticed significant improvement in that area since I've been vaping. The cottonmouth never really bothered me as much as the bad breath that came from smoking. I always used to have to brush my teeth immediately after to get rid of that nasty taste. Now after I have a nice vaporbong session I don't have that lingering smoky taste in my mouth anymore. This has been one of the many aspects about vaping that I really appreciate ya heard me.
