Magical Butter

Ok, I got the butter maker before and started reading the instructions. Does anyone have any idea why it says for best results do not pre-grind? If we use abv it is ground so was curious as to why.

As I read it all recipes are 1 cup to 4-8 grams of herb or if we use abv I guess 8 to 16 grams.

I'd say maybe even more abv, but starting at 12-16 would probably work (hopefully someone else will chime in who has actually made it with abv). You'll have to test it on yourself regardless each time because so many factors including how good the stuff was to begin with and how brown you got the abv - many variables to affect potency.

Very true but since nobody else gave any specifics I thought I would. I also now know why straining was an issue. I don't get why a company would make this machine and not commission someone to make a proper filter. It is the regular gold coffee filter but it has a solid bottom ugh that is sooooooooooo dumb. They should have gotten one made with the mesh screen on the bottom and it wouldn't be as much of an issue if at all. I am going to find one but when I look I never find one I think is perfect so I will have to settle for less then perfect.

I am not going to make anything today but did clean the machine cause it smells like metal. It still smells but I feel better. I also wanted to learn how it cleans and how loud it is. It isn't bad as far as noise. I did the cycle I think four times to get rid of the soap instead of rinsing it then wiped down with a paper towel.

EDIT: So I decided that the filter is going to be useless so I am looking at this one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FSJ45Y/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1OH90MA4UKR9I According to the pictures it is all screened at the bottom. I don't trust pictures so I am waiting for an email response to that question and the dimensions. It seems from way down in the post that it is the same size as the one that comes with the machine so all should be good. I was worried to get one without the size info cause then you end up with the really small ones.

If you think about it that is hardly any oil/tincture. 32 grams takes up a cup on its own I think.
As a side note I ordered a filter from amazon with a mesh bottom to fix the solid not straining issue that was reported. I still haven't used the machine cause I can't figure out what to make that I can use at the moment.

I did a 35 gram tincture the other day I didn't see how much fluid it took but my abv filled almost 3/4 of an old jam jar measuring say 3" w and 6" tall I would guesstimate it took close to 8 fl oz of 151 to saturate my herbs.

Disclaimer: These are guesstimates and not facts, I am not home and already reduced my tincture down to around 2 oz or so, but 32g is more then 1 cup I would say depending on the grind its more like 1.5 to 2.5 cups I think.

Thanks t-dub, I will get around to experimenting.

I need to go get the everclear when the strainer comes in and I think the tinture will be the way to go. Making oil and stuff is not what I want to do right now cause I have a bunch in the fridge and don't use it cause then I have to cook separate meals.

Thanks t-dub, I will get around to experimenting.

I'm not sure the machine decarbs the material properly in the beginning of each cycle. That being said, all I have made is tincture. Which was a pain as I previously mentioned. But it was tested today by someone with a lot of pain, and they gave it a good review for pain relief. So it wasn't a loss after all. It just doesn't taste too good. Using hash instead of trim would greatly help this issue. Even bud would improve the taste, or so I'm told. I will be making butter next. Just gotta get some more material. I'm not sure if an ounce is enough for 2 1/2 cups. Should be I think. Have some nice recipes I want to try with butter. I hope it turns out good. I can't deal with the tincture due to it's taste. Bad taste is a very bad thing for nausea. You can really taste the greeness from the chlorophyll in the leaves. I have recently tried some gummies I get from someone, and they don't do much for me either, but help with pain for the other person I help with meds. So edibles might not be for me. But I will continue to experiment, so I can help my friend with his arthritis, stinosis, degenerative disk disease, etc, that he suffers from daily. Seems edibles are great for body pain. At least for him, can't guarantee that for anyone else, as all bodies are different of course.:science:

Water baths will remove the chlorophyll and improve taste depending on how much trim you have though it may be easier to just sift the trim semi-aggressively and use the resulting product. To save the tincture you do have you can try adding it to a glass of juice, or add flavorings to your tincture to help mask the bitterness of the chlorophyll. Good luck sorry it didn't turn out as well as you had hoped. Thanks for keeping us all posted on the results.

I would do the decarb in the oven. I like having the ability to open it up and feel the material. That is the only way I can be sure it is at that perfect point...no taste or potency issues.

I also agree that they should have designed some sort of built in strainer.

They have a built-in decarb cycle in the MB2 that cannot be turned off. I also like to do my own decarb, but wonder if double decarb would be too much...

I'll wait and see how good the MB2 alone does with decarb before fretting too much about this.

You may be able to time how long that cycle is, and then toss your herb in right after. Not sure if that would trigger a reset though....You can also try decarbing it halfway in the oven, then put it into the machine to ensure a more thorough drying if you are finding it is not sufficient.

Your comment about drying brings up one thing about the MB2 decarb cycle that is different from the norm (my norm at least).

Since you add the herb with the liquid all together up front, it decarbs not through dry heat, but by raising the temperature of the mixture to a fixed level for a fixed time in "wet" form. Not saying that won't do the trick - just different for me.

Yeah, I am more of a dry decarb type of guy. I do know a few members around here that do utilize liquid...I wonder if the moisture content of the herb prior to the bath, is more important than when using an oven?

If we are using ABV no decarb needed but if your not I would say still decarb the old fashion way but what do I know.

Tweek, according to the instructions if you open the machine it triggers a reset.

The decarb should have been an optional cycle to run... like a heat dry on your dishwasher but adjustable for varying products. Got some old really dry herb cut the time down, fresher herb with more moisture bump the time up from default, etc. Oh well maybe on MB 3.0 while hes at it, he can throw in a better strainer with like a clip on press for the strainer or something of the sort.

This is so you get ALL the flavor and good stuff in the concoction instead of stuck to your grinder.

I agree - hopefully he keeps his upgrade program in place.

You Must Unlearn, What You Have Learned...
Just made a batch starting with 72 gms abv ended up about 80 with a bunch of stems also, that I didn't weigh. 3 days in crockpot, the straining is a pain but with this much it's a big pain, extra wire or rubberbands needed around a cut up t-shirt. Still the best run I had, no spills! Seriously none, had a white shirt on too. Just finished up the no bakes look and smell awesome! Time to take the remnants to the compost to end/start the cycle again. One of these days I will have you magic butter maker!!...

seriously, is it such a big thing? Seems like you have to cook 2 pounds of butter at a time.

That is a downside in my opinion. Fortunately you don't have to fill it full, but the minimum is 2 cups liquid/butter/oil with at least 8-16g herb (avb would be approx 32-64g). The ability to use smaller concentrations of liquid would be sooo nice. I would love a mini-me version of this.

I'd like to use as someone said earlier on the thread, to make Kratom tea or something like that for me mostly, I don't need 2 litres of it.
You can say I'm a lightweight but I spent maybe 4/5 months to collect 20/25gr~ of ABV. That size is for a dispensary of a coffeeshop, not for me.
I would have been nice to consider having it cause Kratom doesn't mix well at all in water but I like tea out of it, and I like butter too.

2 cups is a lot less than 2 liters. I think it would be perfect for kratom tea.

Good point about the abv though - takes me a long time to accumulate it also.

A quarter-size MB would be perfect. Quarter-size, half-size, and full-size for the ultimate line-up. Or a full-size that would do those lower amounts, but I don't know how feasible that would be.

Even if it would be difficult to miniaturize the motor and other parts, just make the container and mixing blade smaller - or have detachable components like a good food processor does. It's not the size of the device that is the big issue, but the quantity of material required.

Don't darken your ABV as much and you can use less. This way you get the best of both worlds. You get to vape and use it in butter or oil.

I got my filter today so I think I am going to make olive oil infused with herb and garlic. I am not sure how to put garlic in so I suppose I will just chuck some garlic powder in as I don't think chopped wet garlic will work. Any cooks out there have any ideas. I can't see making olive oil without putting the garlic straight in.

OK - I can now truly testify to the beauty of this machine. I decided not to start with the "good stuff" we all know and love, as I don't want to risk 8-16g fresh at the moment and don't have enough abv.

So... I put in 1 liter water, 2 tbsp loose-leaf premium kratom, and set the MB2 on 190F for 1 hour. I can say this is the richest kratom tea I have ever brewed without it becoming bitter (as I have had happen on the stove top). Usually I just use a Breville automatic tea maker with the same amounts for a smooth brew, but this is many shades darker - pretty much coffee black. It tastes very smooth with no bitterness.

Monster, monster extractor I'd say. The [unnecesary in this case] higher temp decarb cycle did not seem to affect it negatively.

Next time I might check the results with one tbsp leaf to make sure I'm not wasting kratom due to hitting the saturation limit.

You should have no problem with chopped wet garlic - in fact you may try throwing it in whole and see how the MB2 chopper handles it. But I would start with less rather than more as this gadget will extract mightily (more, if you have a werewolf problem).

I have the pre-chopped that you buy in the store. Maybe I will get fresh as I prefer it but not so sure it would make a difference in oil.
