The Herbalizer

Vapor Sloth
The more I contemplate this machine, the more excited I get. I would love to try some white sage and eucalyptus etc :) I really want to take my vapor lab to the next level and have an entire stock of Chinese/medicinal herbs that I can use for my health instead of big pharma pills. Can't wait for some feedback on this unit from people we know/trust.

Looks really good!! But I wish they had been more original with the name... I've already gotten the Herbalaire and the Herborizer names confused... now another one to add to the mix

Edited: I was going to reply to a post, then I posted a copy of the post with nothing else by mistake, as I hadn't even started to compose the reply.

Might have had something to do with the freshly harvested wand hash.

I find it interesting that 2 NASA engineers designed something that looks like a flying saucer! I wonder how big this thing is?

Since I am just beginning as a FC newby, it's important for me to clarify that I'm a total independent and not a representative of Herbalizer.com, although of course I'm their #1 fan. My son Josh, CEO of Herbalizer, unfortunately won't be participating due to the overpriced lawyers.

That said, Josh has been talking about the importance of exact temperature control for years and I would appreciate some more follow-up on the comments below. As I understand it, each molecule has a unique boiling point, for example, H2O boils at 100°C or 212°F, so what if you boil impure water for an hour at 99°C (thus boiling away all the impurities that boil < H2O), then start boiling it at 100°C? Wouldn't you then be boiling pure water? And wouldn't the same be true for Cannabinoids?

Exactly. I'm not trying to discredit the idea of precise temperature control. That's obviously a desirable feature for exactly the reason you stated.

I am trying to correct the notion that somehow precise temperature control means you can go to 185°C (365°F) and get only CBN—or even just the components that have lower boiling points. You can't.

Yeah, i think it's important to differentiate between precise temperature control and what you really extract at that precise temperature and in what concentration of each cannabinoid.

Hmm I think if you do this, a lot of water will evaporate too in that hour...:2c: i guess that is one of the points being made here, that even below a substance boiling point a certain amount of evaporation takes place, i.e. a glass of water will evaporate at room temp over a long enough period.

I guess with cannabis that means it becomes harder to single out one single component so to speak. with other herbs, that might have more or less one specific desired compound, the trick of extracting only what you want might be a bit easier. I guess it shows us again that nothing is perfect;)

Do like very much what I have seen so far. Time for the beta testers to come in and enlighten us I would say:)

Oh and a little side note on the 'plastic'. I don't know what this is going to be made of, but I myself have learned that my MINIVap, wich has a lot of internal 'plastic like' parts, tastes way much better then my solo with gong...I do believe we have passed the time of glass being the one and only inert substance to create vapor tasting like it is supposed too...and yes there is a big difference between the solo and minivap when it comes to how they work, was just saying that 'plastic' like does not mean it will taste worse then glass, the opposite might be true:p (not trying to derail the subject at hand wich is the herbalizer)

So I'll just sit back now and see what pops up:cool:

tepictoton has explained it correctly. Vapour is produced long before the boiling point is reached. I've written an article for Vape World that goes into some detail about this.

One of the things I mention is that the compounds do not exist in isolation. I didn't explore this in detail because I don't think anyone has actually done research to determine how much this matters, but mixtures of two or more components can form something called an azeotrope. This means the mixture has a boiling point that differs from that of any of it parts. Additionally, some of the compounds we're interested in are changing as we heat them. The result of all this is that even with precise temperature control we cannot isolate specific components, we can only select the temperature that maximizes the ratio of the target component to the others that are being vapourized.

Could have licensed some IP from a company under NDA to make the device... or maybe their lawyers are just paranoid about china. There's many things that can go wrong for a company here...

The lawyers likely don't want his device associated with this type of forum. He is probably taking a approach similar to S&B and Arizer. While we have come a long way in the past few years. We have to keep in mind that cannabis is illegal in most places.

This is something that I talked about with Josh, and yes that was an Aromed on his desk in the picture.

Beyond the use of a halogen bulb the designs are radically different. The Aromed has no thermal mass, uses a 50W bulb, and its temperature sensor is behind its bulb. The Herbalizer has an optimized amount of thermal mass, a 300W bulb, and has multiple temperature sensors with one being in the airstream right underneath the bowl.

Both can be set in increments of 1F or 1C. However, since the Aromed's temp sensor is behind its bulb and not in the airstream, the setpoint is only a rough estimation. Because it has no thermal mass and uses a low power bulb, it also can't maintain a stable temperature when being used to the level that the Herbalizer can.

We didn't use the Aromed while I was there, but I have used one in the past. From what I remember it took quite a bit longer to heat up initially, and would produce thin vapor if hit hard. The Herbalizer is claimed to maintain temperature within 5F while in use and I believe it. Based on the stuff mentioned above I'd guess with the Aromed it'd be more like 75F.

Numbers aside, I've hit both and wouldn't put them in the same league. Maybe some of the Aromed owners here can comment on some of the above.

First, let me state that I like the Herbalizer, and can't wait for it to come out.

As far as the differences between the Aromed, and the herbalizer, from what I can tell by the information I have seen so far, is that the Aromed is more "homebuilt", meaning it is made in a way that, there is a chance that less things can go wrong, and built to last. If you need to change the heater, you can go to the store, and get the halogen bulb. The herbalizer uses more harder to get tools, so if things go wrong with the heater, you need them to change things.

The Aromed may have the thermocouple above the bulb, but the way they accomplish keeping the temperature accurate, is by having the hot air accumulate in the screwcap, then having it shoot out into the herb. This is why it has the holes instead of one big one. They also made the aromed to deal a certain amount of air to heat up (3 liters every 5 seconds) so it can heat up to the temperature you dialed in. The way air operates, it rises when it gets hot, so by having the sensor above the bulb, you can measure the incoming air's temperature, and the bulb adjusts to make sure the hot air it makes, is what you dialed in. This is why you don't have to worry about heat effecting your herb when you aren't inhaling, because the Aromed lightbulb dims down when you aren't inhaling allowing the excess heat to rise away from your herb, and keep it cool. As long as you inhale at the speed it is allowed to measure, you will get a precise temperature. This ingenious way of thinking to make a vaporizer, is why you only need 65 watts to make it work, as opposed to 300w that the Herbalizer needs.

The Herbalizer, is perfect for when someone wants to inhale like a bong user, while still getting precise temperature. Now, they will be diluting the vapor with tons of air, but it's still good to have that choice for certain people. The look is also much nicer for those that need the eye candy. And it doesn't use glass so there is less chance to break anything.

There's more to it, pure water at 1 atmosphere of pressure (changes with altitude and weather fluctuations) can exist in two states at 100*C, liquid and gas. In order to change the state, you still need to put in lots of heat to overcome the intermolecular forces that hold the molecules together in the liquid state. Heat is an often forgotten/ignored/neglected/etc. factor, but it is of critical importance to be both accurate and precise.

Why would lawyers keep somebody from giving out information on a product that have designed?
Because of how comments are interpreted. Many people who don't understand things often misinterpret comments in a negative way, and will go on campaigns against a product. Similarly, it is often looked down upon when a product representative says anything negative, even if they are in the right, and only defending themselves.

Similarly to how I frown upon deceit when it comes to statements similar two "other vapes don't work".

Looking good.

I picked up some fresh lavender from the local tulip fields. I imagine it would be quite relaxing in this vaporizer.
