Yeah, iv'e tried a stem or two without stirring, but i end up with about 25% of the bowl still pretty green by the screen..

I also haven't found the need to stir. Some variables that I've narrowed down for myself:
  • Well ground herb.
    • Don't crazy and grind it into dust. But do grind it.
  • Dry herb.
    • I usually grind a couple days worth and leave it in my 4pc grinder which helps it to dry out a bit more.
    • I load what I need and store the grinder in it's own mason jar.
  • Lightly packed stem
    • I draw in to fill the stem and very gently tamp with my finger once or twice
    • My own quirk: I usually do my first two draws with the solo upside down. This (in my mind) helps keep the herb in the stem for the remainder of the session right side up. Very seldom do I get any bits resting in the oven.
  • Variable draw length
    • Longer length draws (8-10 seconds) towards the end of the session will tend to reach the screen. I've had time to enjoy the tasty flavor by this point and am just extracting the remaining cannabinoids before I shut er down.
  • Variable draw speed
    • Faster draw speed will create hotter herb provided your not outpacing the oven. Experiment to find balance.
I usually set the Solo on level 4 or 5. My first few draws are more like puffs (like on an old tobacco pipe or lighting a cigar) warming up the herb while exhaling through my nose capturing all the flavors and smells. Once I begin to get vapor from my nose I switch to short-ish draws of about five seconds and exhale through my mouth for the remainder of the session. I usually get about eight to ten vapor draws or so and two more long draws to finish off. Once the flavor gets near that sharper toasty taste I know it's time to finish up.

I tend to take my time. I enjoy the whole process. It's a relaxation/night time/bed time thing for me and I've run up against the auto shutdown a couple times vaping a single load.

not sure of the amout cause i usually dont weigh it, but i can tell you it's a full stem and i pack it down. not super tight but i do press it against my finger to even it out and pack it some. after i pack the stem i put it in the solo and then i turn it on (the solo is off wile i am preparing the stem) and turn it up to 4. i do a full 12 minute session at 4 and when the auto shutoff kicks in, i turn it back on and bump it up to 6 and do another 6 to 8 minutes. then i turn off the solo and unload. i never stir and the ABV comes out evenly cooked to a dark chocolate brown color.

the only difference is when i pair my solo with my bubbler. then i start at 6 and stay there and usually only one 12 min session is all i need. i still do not stir and the ABV still comes out evenly cooked but when i use my bubbler the ABV is a darker brown

Menz, as I said in my last post , I think my problem is I'm not fully finishing the bowl to dark brown because I pack too much herb and be come fully medicated before I ca n finish the load. My tolerance is only average so I'm fully medicated with 5 to 7 hits. I'm going to order the PV shorty stem and crank up the heat a little more so I can finish the load to that nice dark brown color. 22 stated that the Planet Vape shorty stems hold about 30% less herb, therefore, the shorty might be a better fit for my medicating needs. I think you're right about finishing the load at higher temp I'm going to crank it to level 6 next time. Thanks for the input.. ..

Oh how I envy your low/average tolerance, damn you waxes and oils (j/k, I still love you)! I think you have the right plan now, the shorty stem should fit your needs nicely if you are well medicated with 5-7 hits, just about what the shorty stem should provide.

SWEET that was exactly my idea. Last comparison, solo vs DBV (found it for 140-160)? Does the solo still beat it or at least keep up (ie am I giving up allot). I was unable to find a picture of the McDonald's cup mod, anyone have it handy?

I love it ....
I Honestly Love it ....

Yes , it has become my home vape also .
$ 160 + $ 40 PA is very worth it .

I just received My PVHES straight turbos today with record time! I ordered last friday night updated my order to add another turbo(thankfully) on Monday. I went to press the stem into the solo and in broke clean apart where it had been bored out. It seems the turbo looses stability where it used to have the 4 hole support. I emailed PV with a pic. We'll see what they say come Monday. Luckily I got the extra stem. It hits really smooth and now enjoying my salt and vinegar chips!

Always in a state of confusion and silliness♀
I never thought of that but the taking out the 4 hole part would make it less stable. We have to push pretty hard to get it in sometimes if you just readjusted your ring.

I think it heats faster and you don't have to worry about running out batteries.

from what I understand that power adapter is like a pass-through...allows the unit to run strictly off the power adapter. Does not charge or deplete battery....i may be wrong though

I don't stir I just dump stem in hand in sort of a line and jut straw it back up.
And to make a stock stem smaller try the No2 / top hat screen instead of the domed one.flpped either way.

+ 1
That's what I use too .
They're a bit pricey though , but I find they fit snugly in the stem .
The screen is real fine , but doesn't add to any extra restriction in your draw .
I bought a new box of 16 when I got my Solo last 07/12 .
So far I've only gone thru half the box .

Amen to all of that.
I use minor variants of the above, 1/2" screen, ~0.15g uberdry herb, setting 4 sometimes going to 5, keep it mostly upside down, a few mouth puffs until I see the first vapour, then long slow draws. I get very even toasting without any need to stop and mix.

One (of many things) I like about the solo is that it maintains much more stable air extraction temperatures than my old dual digi plugin ceramic element whip - presumably more power and low airflow.
Some find the stiff draw a problem but for me it's a feature, not a bug - it helps keep the extraction air temperature constant = efficient sublimation.
Makes sense to me - I'd got into the habit of constricting my whip tube to slow down the rate of airflow to keep the incoming air temperature more consistent.

They're easy to clean in Iso 91%
iso + an old toothbrush - works wonders.
Never tried but might make for interesting brushing later...

It actually does deplete the battery too very slightly. The battery light will eventually start dropping without charging.

Can you just remove the battery and use it with the PA. Then just put the battery back in when ready to go portable without depleting battery?

You sure? Yesterday after my unit went off with no batteries, I where all night using it with the PA without problems

I think the answer lies in the fact that batteries slowly deplete their charge if not in use, and the heat also helps depleting the batteries.

I don't think it has to do with the PA operation directly.

^^ Ok, I thought he was saying the PA itself caused the depletion. but I get it the battery will slowly deplete, even when not in use...sorta like the battery for my cordless power drill, etc

I think it's related directly to the PA. The battery doesn't deplete itself so fast from just sitting idle. This is just my observation, go ahead and try it for yourselves...but the key is not to use the battery at all after a full charge...just use the PA for a while....heck, even just a couple of cycles...then plug in your charger and you'll see it charge for some bit.

First post. Hope this is going where I want it to.
Dreamerr, sounds like my new solo has done exactly what yours is doing. Worked fine for 5 days, plugged it in to charge and all that happened was the constant beep, blue light on, no charging light and the bottom 3 numbers kept blinking the yellow light. Have reset it and it continued to not charge. Then today I tried it again and it is charging now.
