Entirely up to you. Try it with one, the other, and both to see what you like best.

I purchased a med. 2 piece and a med. 4 piece SCS from PV when they were first released. I share all the thoughts that they grind absolutely awesome but sadly (I have horrible luck) the 2 piece had the anodized coating rubbed off the teeth after only the first week or so, and the 4 piece got scratched on the male side of the rim, nothing crazy just a few horizontal scratches along the side, from normal use. I was a little saddened because after going through a bunch of grinders I thought that these were perfect...maybe it was just a fluke but I keep going back to my black & decker coffee grinder no matter which grinder I use, so maybe they are just not for me. My favourite hand grinder to date is the Storz & Bickel Herb Mill. Like Centizen said, they are super cheap and they grinder awesome. Furthermore I find the dexterity great with the textured rim and I think it's just the right size. My only gripe is that I can't clean them in the dishwasher. They come out sparkling, but they start to crack.

Large grey 2-piece Santa Cruz Shredder acquired:

A trio of statements:

  • This thing grinds herb like mad, I think I could shred an ounce in a couple of minutes.
  • Its build quality and overall feel excite me. (Engineering major here)
  • It is way larger than I need.
A couple of questions:

  • What do you do with the ground up material when using a 2-piece grinder?
  • How gentle does one need to be with an anodized grinder?

Very Nice Grinder X24. I take it you went with the "Gun Metal" finish? I just placed an order on Planet Vape for a gunmetal Santa Cruz Shredder. I will give my impressions once I receive my mini SCS in the mail and get a chance to try'er out.

I happened to order the "Mini" sized Santa Cruz Shredder because it will fit perfectly in my little stealth box that is shaped like an antique book. I store my Black Wispr in there, along with some other essential tools in my vaporizing toolbox. It also happens to be where I store my grinder.

After using a Volcano grinder for many months now, I have decided to purchase a nice metal two piece grinder. The kind posters on FC have sold me on the Santa Cruz Shredder.

I guess my question is: should I expect the same performance from this smaller version? The Large sized and Medium size SCS pictures that you guys have uploaded look great. They really appear to give that fluff I am looking for in my grinder.

I usually only grind up smaller, popcorn sized pieces of tree, enough for 1-3 sessions worth. I am not loading large pieces in there, so I didn't feel the need to go for a bigger size. Plus it wouldn't have fit in my stealth box where I store my grinder and tools.

Should I still be anticipating that wonder fluff I have been seeing in the images above?

about the mini size SCS.... Im sure it will work very similar, as long as you dont have health problems that affect your hands or wrist joints, etc. In that case, it could be a real doozy! Otherwise, just hold on:)

Yes, gunmetal I believe.

Also, I wish my local headshop had the small SCS in stock. I couldn't help myself and it is definitely much larger than I need.

I've got the mini but haven't used this brand in a larger size. I really like the grinder but it can be very hard to turn if you load it up with chunks that aren't dry. It gave me so much resistance yesterday that I had to give up and use another grinder. The small size doesn't give you much leverage. Half the grinder is smooth, which doesn't help, grip wise. And the rectangular shaped teeth provide little to no help in cutting. My smaller MixnBall Nano (30mm vs. 40 on the Santa Cruz) does a better job with hard to grind pieces because the teeth, while providing 4 edges like the SC, also give you a cutting edge for slicing into the bud. You also get a good grip on both halves of the grinder, not just one. The grip half of the Santa Cruz should also be used as the part that gets loaded, so you don't crush any herb at the edges of the other half (top).

I'd say this design, due to the squared teeth, is pretty much the opposite of the Mendo Mulcher, which cuts into chunks easily due to the two edged, narrow shaped teeth, but doesn't grind well because you've only got two edges. I'd take the S. Cruz over the Mendo any day, but I'll be passing on the Cruz when my bud is sticky. There's just too much resistance.

Thanks for the reply Max, great stuff. I'm still awaiting my Santa Cruz Shredder to show up in the mail. I have strong hands, so I am not too concerned, but I can visualize exactly what you are talking about with the stickier herb. Luckily for me, all of my tree is thoroughly dried (not that sticky is a bad thing) so I still think this grinder will still suit my needs. I might just have to further break it down into smaller chunks by hand before I load it into the SCS. Truth be told, I was sold on the Santa Cruz Shredder because it supposedly fluffs the product to a really nice vaporizing consistency. I have been using the scissoring technique in my Buddah wand, and it works okay, but I like grinding up a nice heaping, fluffed up pile and loading (and re-loading) my unit from there.

So I guess my question back to you Max would be:

For a personal vape session, with popcorn sized pieces that are dried to perfection

Does the Santa Cruz mini give you the same fluff as seen in this video? Looks like she has a medium or large sized SCS.

My nugs I plan on grinding are the same size that this chick loads in at 0:42 into this clip

Do you still get that beautiful consistency with the Santa Cruz Mini? Assuming your trees are dried and not too sticky.....

Good Stuff Max

Good thing about a two piece is you can keep grinding until it's at the consistency you desire. I don't think you'll have any issues getting a fine and fluffy consistency with the mini.

A couple of things to note about that video: It is the large grinder, and they always show about 1/2 of a turn worth of grind. It certainly doesn't take much, but it looks to me like they like to edit out some grinding in their videos which is a bit deceitful.

Or it could just be that they used drier herbs than needed for vaping? You know smokers prefer it drier right. I am pretty sure you don't need more twists with a dry one.... ;)

I have a 4 piece mini SCS that fluffs more than my medium Space Case. I haven't used a larger SCS to know if there is any difference in fluffiness between their sizes. A good question for the SCS rep who posted a page or two back.

I'm sure many of you know this tip but for those who don't... If you have herb that is too damp and or sticky to easily grind put your herb in the grinder, put the grinder in the freezer for 3 or 4 minutes take it out and it should grind a lot easier.

Got my 2 pc Santa Cruz Mini and it is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a grinder to fluff up my material to a beautiful consistency, yet be small sized, and act as a container for 2-3 sessions worth.

Beautiful craftsmanship, excellent design on the teeth, and the rare earth magnets really hold this piece of kit together very nicely.

It's really strange how little effort this grinder takes. You can pop in a large piece of tree and it's ground fully in 2 turns. The consistency of the grind is exactly what I was looking for.

2-3 turns on the grinder and you have a finer consistency, perfect for a vape like my Wispr, or I'm sure it would work well in a MFLB too.

If you stick to one rotation on the grinder, you'll have a little bit more of a bb sized texture, which works perfectly with my Buddah. I just pack all those little bb's in there and vape away, chop with my scissors to refresh the load, re-tamp the material lightly and go to town.

Truly an excellent device and I couldn't have found it without FC. Thanks Guys!

my original Sharpstone is still keeping up! Might have to order a new one soon, and cant decide between the SCS or Space Case. Might go with the SCS since I already have an old 2 piece Space Case.

I truly believe you won't be disappointed in trying an SCS. Even if you end up preferring the grind type you got with your SC to be more to 'your' liking, you'll at least have a relatively inexpensive alternative option to enjoy and experience for yourself something different.

I always cleaned up my SpaceCase with a pick after use... then give it that " bi -yearly Iso Bath" for it's goodies. When I started using SCS I would pluck out that trouble spot around the edges that folks refer to.
I have started to let it be, and not pay such fanatic attention to getting the "corners'. I found that after a bit, it becomes denser and denser, and when finally dislodged, makes a tasty vape!

I have to say that between my large 2 pc and lg 4 pc SCS I definitely prefer the 4 piece, and I don't care about collecting anything :) It shreds perfect every time, no guessing, just spin/shake/spin/shake/open/dump/done :D Grip is fantastic, top and bottom, unlike the 2 pc.

Some mindless philosophy on shred vs grind . . . There was once this TV chef named Pasquale Carpino, who used to cook Italian food, while he sang opera, up in Canada. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Anyways, he had a saying about garlic. He said "You can chop the garlic thats fine, but when you SMASH the garlic, that makes it angry!" Now what he meant by that was is that the garlic definitely is "stronger" if you smash the shit out of it with something flat before mincing. I think something similar might be going on with the shred. In my initial thoughts I used words like "pronounced" when describing flavors. When I put my Leda Uno through the shred, that butterscotch/lemon drop smell now just has more of an angry "edge" if you will? A little peppery bite maybe?

This is all totally subjective so, there you are, but before you dismiss, watch this . . . :)
