Lots of questions this morning.. looks like I poked an anthill. :brow:

All in all lwien gets the prize and has it summed up the best; there is a direct correlation between a Dogs 'age' and the amount of hours it has run (and at what voltage).

I did used to say that I thought cycling pieces up and down was harder on them but since moving to an all welded core and doing much less woodworking with complex glue-ups that isn't a concern of mine anymore. I'm sure it's still valid on some level but now I think the primary cause of aging is hours/voltage run.

Those using a VVPS who can lower the Dogs temp between uses will certainly increase their Dogs longevity as they're cutting back on that voltage aspect of the equation. :peace:

In always turn mine off at night and when I'm not home for a longer period of time, but that's just because I don't like to have too many apliances plugged in/on while I'm asleep.

Sounds like maybe I should pick up a VVPS for Christmas. I hope to have the pup around for a nice while.:D Out of curiosity, I was browsing the HI thread (still early in the thread) and it looks like Alan had a PS for sale that ran at max ~12.4v but could be dialed down. I can't see me running more than 12V because the wall supply gets my AVB plenty dark, but I could leave it on low when not at home. My question, is it better to have a power supply for the dog with a max volt 13+? I've heard the power supplies are more prone to failure if they run at max regularly..? If it wouldn't be negative for it I may just grab one of those as it looked fairly reliable for the users. I suppose his supply would be compatible since the electronics are similar?

Suppose this could be asked in the vvps thread but since it's dog specific was hoping to maybe grab an answer here, mods please move if necessary =/.

I don't know anything about that specific PS but I'd recommend going with a standard lab or tattoo style VVPS if you're going to go that route. Even though the stock UD power supplies say 12v they actually output more in the 13.25v to 13.75v range so that HI one might not do the trick. I'd just get a standard 0-15v (2A+) VVPS and either make your own cable set or buy one from us off the site. :2c:

i guess my hometown has an awesome power grid or wateva regulates my home outlets output, but i kno for sure that I wont be needing a VVPS. if my abv got any darker, it'd be ash. also, ive found that a good 5 minute heat soak before my first draw is awesome. it just fills the bub with delicious cloudy vape. everyone i sho this thing to is blown away

Awesome, more research to be done then. I wondered how I was pulling off almost black ABV ;). I may be sending an order for chords and (if possible), a custom 14mm WonG?

Edit: Anyone on here order an XL or XL2 stem? Caught my eye while browsing the WonG's. That thing looks like a beast.

Dave, do you have any idea what the shipping costs to EU will be for a Wong?

Great to read that you're still testing & making discoveries in terms of durability & longevity btw

DCToke guy, do you mean you leave a loaded stem on the UD for a while before hitting it? Idk why, but I've never even tried that myself :hmm:

To the ones that are looking to buy a VV PSU: I'd recommend you think twice before buying a cheap tattoo psu, or at least do some research on FC on the ones that have already been used for this purpose by other members before you pick one. You can of course get lucky, but from what I've seen so far it seems many that go the tattoo-psu-route end up buying two or more of them because a lot of them crap out pretty quick. Combine that with the added costs of the power cords & you might end up spending less by getting a decent variable PSU right away.

Just something to take in consideration.

ps: a few members in the HI thread posted that the VV psu Alan sold as an option puts out about 12,4 max, so like Dave already stated it's only an option if you want to cool your UD down & not recommendable for more powah.

Merry X-mas Underdogs!

yea. i get much thicker initial hits when i let the bud warm up in the stem on the heat port for a few minutes. seems like it preps the bud instead of hittin it 'cold'

I believe unless it's requested before Dave get's the finish on there they all come with his usual oil/wax (so basically any of them already on the site). Probably shoot him a PM with the kind of wood you'd like, or see if he's got any still under way. Same for the sealant holding in the core. Not sure what a 'vegan dog' constitutes, but it would probably be a ground up build.

Thanks man. Thats what i figured i think the vegan is just the mechanically sealed core iirc

@ OTA - not sure on EU shipping costs for a WonG, message Underdogette and she can look it up for you though I'm sure.

@ Puffers - vegan Dogs are custom made to order so you'd need to contact me directly and we can get you set up. You are correct in that it's simply an UD with the core mechanically fastened in place without the high-temp silicone acting as adhesive. It also doesn't have the ceramic insulation and you can choose your finish, whether it just be oiled, or oiled with a semi-gloss shellac or plain and dry, your call.

Heading back to the shop after a quick lunch break, all orders placed have been sent on out, almost caught up on emails though a few still to get to. Patience grasshoppers.. :peace:

I have to say, this particular Wild Oak UD is one of the most beautiful pieces of wood art I've ever seen.

dave, when did you start making the UDs with the all welded core?

I'm not in front of a calendar right now but it's been an evolving process/change starting when we moved over to the first 24/7 cores. Prior to that point the cores were press-fitted together in a press which worked well but could in some cases let them loosen up over time just enough to start rattling internally. Now with everything being welded solidly together that's not an issue.

So I accidentally broke my 14mm wpa I made for my UD. So I took an old combustion bowl I never used and turned it into a hand blown glass wpa for the UD! All you need is a silicone spacer, screen, and more silicone! The bowl I found used thick silicone and is a perfect seal.

And it looks amazing ontop a dog!!
So take out your pretty little smoking bowls and get cutting!

I apologize if this is in the thread somewhere, but it is pretty long... I found this metal ring near my Underdog the other day and don't know where it came from. But it looks like it's the same size to go around the heat port (not sure if that's the right term but where the silicone tubes sit) on the UD. Is that where it goes or is it completely unrelated?

It doesn't look like any piece that goes into the UD from this angle. Can you take a pic from the side and maybe sitting next to the top of your Dog looking down towards the core so I can see both at the same time? :hmm:

Not to mock or anything, but did you just disassemble a ball-pen perhaps?

& thanks for the reply Dave, gotcha

ps: I think I got one of the earlier latest model cores & I got mine right after beta testing around May of this year. I'm not completely sure but I think it was within a month after that that Dave discontinued the older cores entirely.
