The HI

In my view, the VVPS can help if you'd rather not futz so much with getting the appropriate HI distance from your material. I had success with mine in that regard. But over the last couple months I've found it quite enjoyable to assert more control of each draw, customizing each hit, if you will. I don't view one method better than the other, I just enjoy total control. it's quite nice--sometimes I strike the tubeload perfectly and thoroughly in one draw, if I load it just right.
Why does this commercial come to mind?

Oh, I'm not a big glass-nipple guy, can't help you with that one I'm afraid. I think I used mine between 12,2 and 11,8 but it's been to long to be sure.

OhTheAgony,
Can any one here recommend a good quality vvps that would last a while. I just remembered how much I used to enjoy those low temp vape sessions with the one alan supplied but it didnt last long. I've been using a speaker adapter from my desktop pc its 12v but still gets too hot sometimes.

Though you will need a power cord. I believe they sell those as well, does anybody else know?

The mono plug will have to be DIY regardless.

And +1 on the Hildebrandt PS. I'm waiting for that cheapo PS from the other thread.

Now. can somebody reference a plug? for the HI end?

I've done my fair share of soldering, but tripped over this while looking around for something else.

Any reason this would not work well for the soldering impaired to complete the wiring? May not be the safest thing...

I'm waiting for that same PS. So far, tracking just shows it bouncing around China... with a @$&#ing estimated delivery of 1/10/13.

That will work perfectly.

Yeah, that's a good plug. Rick used to offer them as well as a solution for the wire breakage problem & I use them for easy voltage measuring under load myself.

I don't really like the bulky size of it for daily use though. Here's a regular one, but it might be a bit expensive in terms of shipping for non-Europeans. Tip, just use the measurement part of the description for that add as a search description at your own local ebay

:o

That's is a long wait indeed, sounds like it's coming per boat. I guess it's better that you don't get tracking number with some of these oversee orders. It might just be a worst case scenario estimate though.

What is the best way to clean the copper aromatherapy cup? My cup has a lot of sticky residue from the oil and I'm having a hard time removing it.

Hey Alan how is the move coming along?

Hoping to get an offer on my house this week. Then comes the fun of finding a new place. Everything is pretty much packed and ready to go.

So it looks like Hanukkah will 8 crazy HI'less nights!
Sorry about the HI'less nights this year. I am working on some new cores and piece parts so I will have them ready to go when I start wood turning again.

Will do. You guys are certainly welcome to come visit and get the shop tour. I will even make you some of my sourdough waffles. I have had the starter for 30 years and it was going for 75 years before that. Makes great bread and cinnamon rolls too.

I had a scary moment a few days ago. I recently moved myself and all my vapes have been packed away. It was time to "set up shop" again and when I got my HI out, I noticed the heat island was really loose. OTA was kind enough to direct me to bOOb's post where Alan had explained how to fix it. Luck would have it, though, that we did not have the socket needed for the job.

I decided to plug it in and see if the wood expanding might fix the problem. And guess what? Problem solved!!!! I had never noticed the looseness before because it had been plugged in. So folks, if your heat island has some jiggly bits, don't freak out. It might just be that the wood has dried out enough that, when cool, the island is looser.

just put down a nipple stem at 12.8 and loved it! the second hit was weak, so I either cached the whole stem in one hit or I need to up the voltage. I have it set on 13 for the next stem...see you soon!

Or you just need to let the core heat back up. Sometimes I take a couple hits and think I finished it and walk away only to come back and get some more hits once the HI is back to temp.

mom - You must have one with the two piece core yet. It is a quick 5 minute job to change out cores whenever your would like one that won't get loose. Glad to hear it is tight again now. I have found that it is the moisture that affects the wood dimensions the most. When cool, the wood will absorb water from the air causing it to swell. Since the wood gets larger in all dimensions, that means that the inside diameter also gets larger which loosens its grip on the stainless steel sleeve and allows it to move. Heating up the wood drives all the water away and shrinks everything back down to size. It may take several hours to drive all the water out. The humidity varies depending upon the location and season. It is much more likely to get loose when the wood is cold in the summer than in the winter. Keeping it plugged in all the time will keep the wood in a dimensionally stable condition.

stickstones - It is certainly possible to cache an entire stem in one draw. The higher the temperature, the faster the roast. The amount of oil in your herb can make a big difference too. I have noticed that some herb doesn't last as many draws as others. Some I have to be careful not to combust and others I can hit as hard as I want. A hash nipple would be very tough to put down in one draw. I have not yet combusted while using a glass nipple. Did you try the glass nipple on your Hot Pod?

PB88123 - I have noticed that it does get hotter after setting for a couple of minutes. Great for finishing that last bit of oil in the herb. Just a bit of caution with the first draw on a fresh roasting tube. I like to mix some room air to adjust the temperature. The continuous flow of air through it provides more than adequate vaporization temperature for a dark roast.
