After running 2 UDs full time for WonG testing the entire weekend, the inevitable happened.... They have managed to alter local weather patterns.

I kid you not. I just took this picture a few minutes ago. I knew the UDs were foggy fuckers, but wow!

Hey Stu, how would you clean the wood on glass bowl when it gets dirty? Is isopropyl alcohol safe with the wood? I've got an Underdog with one of these bowls on the way now :D.

Hey sunsett, I would recommend getting one that's rated at 1000ma (1A) or more. Even though the UD should only draw .6A or a bit less I think it's best to have a power supply that's powerful enough to not have to run all-out to power it. It's been my experience that when run at near max power for long periods of time power supplies fail much faster. :2c:

The wood itself shouldn't require cleaning from what I can tell. The silicone is replacable, but could be cleaned with a qtip lightly dipped in iso as well. The glass stem is where all the vapor action is occuring (should be the only part that gets buidup), and that can be easily cleaned with an iso soak. Same for the screen, but they are also replacable/disposable IMO.

Although it hasn't yet happened with my WonG, I expect the thick silicone to lossen up over time as it has with my wood stem. When this happens, I will just cut off another short piece of thick silicone to form a new bowl. You may want to order some extra thick silicone when picking up a WonG as you will probably use it at some point in the future. FWIW you only need 1.5" of thick silicone to essentially create a brand new bowl.

I'm really enjoying this thing especially with my HydraTube. Back to more testing! :science:

Wow sounds pretty good man. Did you use your dog with a waterpipe?

HERBavore,
I've had my white ash UD for a couple months now and have had ZERO problems with it. To this day it is still the most enjoyable, efficient, high-quality, and beautiful piece of art/vaporizer I have EVER used. The quality is very impressive, every time I take it out and plug it in it feels like first time it's been used. I've tried other 'log vapes' (woodeez, rockzap, purple days) and the density of the clouds do not compare to the supercell produced by my UD. Also the customer service Dave provides is the best I have seen (better than any product I have bought, vape or not). I am completely hooked to underdog and hope to buy another in the future and highly recommend the underdog to those looking for a new vaporizer. I could go on and on but I need to get back to my puppy ;)
Sincerely,
A very satisfied customer, Joe.

@ Stu - thanks for all your hard work and testing dude.. hope it wasn't too hard on you lol.

@ ioright - his and her Dogs, the perfect Xmas gift :brow: I'll get them sent out right away.

@ Crohnie - sounds fun dude :D

@ LogVaked - wow thanks for the props man, always really happy to hear how much people enjoy their Dogs!

I've been plowing through tons of work that's been coming in lately so haven't haven't been around these parts that much lately.. glad to see you guys are all still having a good time, and as usual, playing nice. It's looking like we'll be extra busy through the holidays and then expect things will probably taper back off to the normal rates so just bear with me and I will answer your emails and messages as soon as I can.. really, I swear! :p

Lots going on around here both with the 'same old stuff' like making Dogs and getting them sent off to their new homes but also plenty of new stuff coming down the pipe for the new year. As soon as we work ourselves a little bit of breathing room I'll be taking some time to update you guys on all the details I can, maybe before the holidays, maybe after.. as soon as we get the time. I figure it'd be nice to do a 'year end review' type thing and a 'what's coming in 2013' as well. As always I like to keep you guys in the loop as much as possible so I hope no one minds.. sleeping at your desks, will in this case, be allowed if you find it too boring.

For now though this Dog needs to get back to work.. :peace:

Hey Dave, there seems to be something wrong with my UD :uhoh: Out of nowhere the temperature it has been decreasing over the last day and now it's stopped heating up altogether. though i suppose it could be the charger itself? any way for me to check that?

Hey EnjoyYourOrange sorry to hear you're having some issues.

Do you have another power supply you can use to test the Dog? Anything with a plug that fits and that is 12-14v (@ 600ma / .6A or more) should suffice for testing it for a few minutes.

You can message or email me and I can walk you though some other things we can try and if need be make arrangements to swap your Pup out or bring it in for a vet visit.

From what I remember, I think 14-15 volts max was where most stopped. 15 was to be only a few minutes as a 'boost' I believe.

Some rules of thumb for feeding your Dogs:

11.00v - 12.50v = normal operation
12.50v - 13.00v = hot operation
13.00v - 13.75v = very hot operation
13.75v - 14.50v = boosting (less than 5 minutes)
14.50v+ = rapidly damaging to piece, risk of fire (this is like driving your car in 1st gear on the highway)

I've been using a 14v power adapter that I got at a thrift store and I have it connected to my dog 24/7. I've had my setup like this for the last 2 weeks and it appears to be ok. Perhaps the voltage at my house is low, or the power supply puts out less than it says. I have found that the first hit after the dog has been sitting for a while is notably hotter than the following uses.

As a side note, I am looking for some silicone tubing that doubles as a UD stem and an Arizer solo stem. I assume this means 3/8" ID and 1/2" OD, or maybe 9/16" or 5/8" OD. Does anyone know which?

@ Blazed - The tubing that we use with UDs is 3/8" ID and 1/2" OD (for the thin-walled) and 5/8" OD (for the thick-walled). We get it from a couple different vendors but I think they only sell to businesses but you can buy similar tubing from US Plastic here: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=23884&catid=799 (we also carry this stuff from time to time). :peace:

I might have a few pieces for a mini-refresh but not sure yet, will probably know by tonight after I check in on them. If not then the next refresh will be after the holidays. Anyone hoping to get a Dog before Xmas will probably need to order by next Friday to ensure safe delivery before then, later than that might arrive in time but would be pushing your luck.

I'd love to stay and chat with all you Dogs but I have to get back to work, cutting blanks for a few hundred soon-to-be Pups.. still haven't taught them to make themselves.

A bothersomely amateur and exhaustively wordy but nontheless earnest review for your reading pleasure.:\

This is my first review, and the UD is only the second vape I've used (after the MFLB), and second vape I've purchased (after the DBV... still waiting on that one), so, I'll be clear from the beginning that any usefulness attatched to this assesment will probably only apply to rookies who don't want to read the entire thread - veterans will most likely find little of value here.

Starting with the packaging, which is important to me; I live in a small town in a red state. It is definitely discrete. Plain USPS priority box wih a regular, unassuming return address. No one's going to have any idea what's in it. And the packaging inside the box was immaculate. It was as though my father had packed it while insatiably determined to finally teach me "the proper way" to send a package. Really, it just could not have been any safer in that thar' box. Furthermore, the shipping was as fast as a person could ask for. To be specific, I ordered it early Wednesday evening (my time,) it shipped Thursday morning (his time), and I got it on Monday - and my small town's mail goes through a few stations before it gets to me. So that was freakin' awesome.

All of this naturally falls under the customer service aspect, which in total is stupendous; I definitely felt good about buying from this company.

As far as this vape's already practically legendary efficiency goes, I found it to be true! Indubitably true! This was one of those rare occurences where something was as good as I imagined it could be... if only that could be said for the rest, or even a little more of, my life. I kept looking in my "Daily Supply" jar and wondering if I was even going to get through 25% percent of it. So far, for each individual day, I have not. Factor in the learning curve and that's pretty darn good, and getting better each day I use it. The "investment" is already paying off!

Now, I'm the type who greatly prefers small hits, as I have an embarassingly low tolerance. I'd much rather take three small hits over 20 minutes than one huge rip - frankly, I've got plenty of spare time, and around here, the days all feel like at least two days. Additionally, huge rips tend to make my chest sore and also help bring on panic attacks. So I like being able to use small amounts. But in the process of learning how to properly use the UD, I found myself taking much bigger hits than I'm used to without trying - so big hits are definitely possible if that's what you prefer, or you can use it in pretty much the same way you would an old combustion one-hitter. But uh, even after just one of bigger rips, I was hopelessly medicated. So, in my opinion, the little Dog can pack a wallop, as others have mentioned. And once I got the hang of it, I was able to take small and wicked efficient hits that kept me motivated and active without anxiety. Perfect. And just for the sake of, I psyched myself up into being ultra brave and tried moving the screen during one bowl to get hotter temps., and found it to be very easy after a few clumsy tries.

Another reason I was interested in the UD is because it fits in so well with my cabin home (glorified apartment), to the point where it is virtually unnoticeable; it's pretty much in camoflauge. So it's rates high in the inconspicuousness factor, if that's important to you.

I have found the warmup time for my UD to be about half an hour, as others have. So... just pop it on when you wake up, go move your bowels, drink your tea, feed the cat, and it'll be ready to go right when you need it. To me, a half hour wait first thing in the morning is easily manageable. Especially if you're a morning crapper who uses that time to "really get some thinking done."

It also comes with a buttload of helpful little tools and storage tubes that I think most people will find themselves using for more than just the UD, which is nice. I especially liked the inclusion of the corks - very handy!

I won't say what extra goodies were included in mine for using the shipping code - that might not be fair to future buyers - but the ones I received were nice and something I will actually use, instead of being merely meaningless throwaway items.

And just to stress the lovely simplicity a bit more...

The first vape I used (but don't own) was the MFLB. I liked it okay, but felt like I could never quite use it correctly. I'm an idiot with "stuff like that." I'm more of a booksmart guy with zero common sense, so my slight dissatisfaction with the MFLB I chalk up to my own woeful ineptitude. But, despite being that type, after the third session with the Underdog, I felt confident that I was using it in a near perfect mix of "the way it should be used" coupled with the style that suits my personal medication needs. I've picked it up in a way I never did with the MFLB. So, if you like that vape, you'll enjoy the Underdog as well. If you don't like the MFLB, I would say the Underdog is worth trying before you give up on vapes altogether (as I almost did). And considering it's very reasonably (relatively) priced, you won't have to spend too much to find out if it's right for you.

So, all in all, the UD is simple, relaxing, not intimidaing, and lovely to look at, as well as calming to hold. Really, I think you'll find yourself just holding it for no reason. It's very welcoming in a natural, mostly indefineable way. It just feels... right. It's wood, after all.

The only negatives I could find aren't really negatives, and are pretty much "nature of the beast" issues, as far as I can ascertain.

One thing that surprised me was the size and weight of the power supply. When looking at all the UD's, I never really thought about the wallwort, but it's fairly large and heavy. Bigger and heavier than my UD, I think. But I don't mean to imply that it's huge - not at all. It's just bigger than I was expecting. The only issue that could arise from it is that you might have to factor it in when deciding where you want to keep your Dog - make sure there's enough space!

I did notice it was giving off a slight smell that others have mentioned the first time I used it. The smell was almost nonexistant the second time I used it and completely gone by the third. And really, it was hardly noticeable to me to begin with. So don't worry!

It does take some practice to figure out where to put your screen (and for me, HOW to put your screen!), your draw speed, etc. But, even to a newcomer with little-to-no common sense, the Underdog is soon giving very nice hits - and they keep getting better very quickly.

To my childishly wussy hands, the Dog definitely was warm, but I wouldn't say it was "hot." It was not a Twig, which I think get a little hotter, ... it definitely is noticeably warm, but i found it to be pleasantly so, I guess, especially since I was using it in the basement where it's a little chilly. I have had mine on for seven hours straight at most so far and did not notice it being any hotter than it was after only one hour. So I didn't find it to be a problem, but something to factor in, perhaps.

SO!...To put it slightly more austerely: I really, really like this vape! Affordable, simple, effective, efficient, aesthetically pleasing, and from a company obviously dedicated to superior service. I think this is going to be my "daily driver" for quite a while...

Sorry for my longwindedness!... I must crave attention or something.

Just out of personal curiosity, which dog did you end up with? Enjoy your vape! One of the things I stumbled on that works for me is reversing the screen to dome side toward the heat element. Before my ABV came out fairly even, but switching it around gets air to the corners where the bowl shape draws it all in to the center. Now I may stir once every stem towards the end just to make sure it's all even, where before it was 4-5 stirs a stem. :2c:

I hear what you're saying on the power supply. I dedicated the pup it's own outlet so I wouldn't be taking any power away with other electronics LOL.

Thanks for your input! I've been using the screens the opposite way so far - I'm going to give the other way a try now...

I ordered the plain Ash UD, first and foremost because of price. I was expecting the DBV to be my all-day choice and ordered it a day before reading about the UD so I couldn't spend too much... and now I've been reading about that Pax and the Cloud too and both sound frickin' sweet... I also chose it because it blends in so perfectly. I don't need to hide my medicating, but... I don't know, I guess it's more of a private thing for me.

Certainly been enjoying the Dog so far! Which one do you have? I REALLY wanted the Chinese Sumac, but alas, it just wasn't meant to be...

Dogpound:

Hoping that ya'll can help me out. I have owned/loved my MFLB (with PA) for about a year, and have had my underdog for about a week. After reading almost every single post in this entire thread, I convinced myself that the dog would be a good fit for me. And I bought one of the Ash twigs because it fit my pocketbook.

What was I looking for? Although I love my MFLB, I started to look into other vapes when I realized the MFLB is kind of a pain in the ass to use. Especially for newbies and those that haven't used it daily for months. My wife thought it was a hassle and would prefer combusting over the "sipping process" that the MFLB requires. Not because she likes combusting better, but just because the MFLB process seemed too lengthy and strategic. The box is not just "two tokes and go."

So, I was looking for an easy-to-use vape that was very efficient. Whenever, the word efficiency comes up in a vaporizer thread, "log vape" is a phrase that is soon to follow. In the log vape market right now, Underdog seems to be the big player that is actually selling vapes (not shut down....no long waiting list....fairly established presence on the scene, etc). I envisioned a vape that I would be able to take "snappers"/one-hits from using a very small amount of herb (think petite green pea size piece per "session").

At first, I thought the dog may have been the perfect purchase despite some minor annoyances I discovered early. While I know many love the big ripes that the larger diameter core gives, the downside of such a large diameter stem is that small herb amounts don't love to stay "packed" against the screen. Since I may be vaping less than the average user, I found creative ways to get around this.

My biggest problem? No matter what I do, I can't get my AVB any darker than yellow/pale green with SOME hints of LIGHT brown. Let me revise that statement: I did get one stem cooked a chocolately brown color, but have not been able to replicate that color since. I have the screen moved down so far that the edges of the screen are almost touching the edge of the core, with the stem fully inserted. All of my stems have been about equally packed. I understand that if I were to load them up more, I MAY be able to darken the AVB (due to the heat retention/insulation of a tighter/thicker pack....?), but I didn't set out to get a device that would cause me to use MORE herb. I assumed that the underdog would be MORE efficient than the MFLB.

Could my old (circa 1960 rental) house be the problem? Most of the outlets in the house are two-prong (without a ground). Is my dog not getting enough juice?

In theorizing about solutions, I have become disappointed. I was hoping for a piece of art that would sit unsuspectingly in my office room. I fear that the solution to my AVB situation is to get a VVPS (which I have read a ton about in this thread as well as the "regulated power for log vape" thread). Honestly, I don't want a clunky electronic device sitting on the desk. I don't want to use the extra energy to power the thing all the time and don't want the extra hassle of having to lug that thing around to a different room when I need the log somewhere else. I guess we can't always get what we want, though.

The plus side? Since the dog is my first convection vape, I can tell it is extracting (albiet at a low temperature) thoroughly. The fine powder of the MFLB seems to be a thing of the past. The dog can pull hot air through the herb very well. Even at the low temps that my dog seems to be running, I am getting a couple large hits (with a tiny amount) that have visible vapor upon exhale. The first hits taste great. I just think I need a higher temperature as the AVB is just not dark enough.

So, what should I do? Any suggestions are welcome. And thanks for reading this long first post!

here for the chicks
If you are using the big unregulated 110V power supply with your UD right now than the small VVPS that's been talked about a lot in the regulated power supply thread lately will be smaller than that.

Just get one anyway dude. I was reluctant too at first but now I'm gospeling these things all over the place, and for a reason. Save yourself the trouble and go VVPS, by the sound of it it will fix all the gripes you have right now.

What works well for me to prevent having to drag a power supply around the house is to just have a standard VVPS on a fixed location in your house (for me that's my desk) and just use a 30 foot extension cord to hook your UD up to that to move around the house freely. I only have a small single floor apartment though, 30 feet won't do it if you got a big ass mansion of course.

I do feel a smaller stem for the UD, one that slides inside the heater core's inner SS tube, would be very welcome for the ones that would like to conserve even more though. It's also my experience that these narrower stems are more capable of producing a denser vapor with less product and less heat than the wider bowl.

Thanks for the quick reply! Can a non-electrician/idiot figure out how to solder a cable to use with that little VVPS? Better yet, is anyone on here selling them yet?

Are you leaving that VVPS on 24/7? Does it produce a ton of heat?

Thanks again.
