Discontinued Purple-Days Vaporizer

I have three PDs, and I plan on running one 24/7 for several more years. When my current Myrtle dies (hopefully another 1-2 years), I'll replace it with my Cherry (never used), and then in turn with my almost new Spalted Maple.

I figure I've got another decade of PD use still. :brow:

Yeah, got a cherry PD that I've been using for over 4 years now and an ash that has been used about 4 times.

My pds are, both, on the second incarnation. The first one, with purple led, get charred in the interior, so I bought another PD wood body and the Pandora Box together. I´ve installed the components of the pandora PD and rebuild the old PD. After a year, the Pandora get charred too, so I bought a piece of wood, from a baseball bat maker, cut on the PD size, hired someone for making the holes and then i´ve installed the components. With this new knowledge (The Pandora Box instructions) I´m able to rebuild my PDs, when needed.

Are the instructions free game at this point? I'd like to see them as well...

You're welcome. It´s nothing.

(De nada bro! (in portuguese)) :spliff:

Sorry people, but the material was copyright protected and I had not paid attention to this fact. My fault. I had to delete the files.

Sorry Tom and Pammy and all the people who "liked" my error.

Hmmm...guess its time to dig up the expired patent that PD was based on and post that. I know someone will correct me, but I believe it is enough to figure out how to "fix" any issues.

Not sure what the copyright violation was though....nothing is labeled as such and at this point getting that info in the wild is better than the PD users that were left behind to fend for themselves.

Or....I have my unused, NIB, PD that I can tear apart and create my own instruction guide from....

Either way, I don't see PD losing any income from the knowledge shared....

If Tom were the great guy some say he is, he would allow the instructions to be published so people could keep their units running for the amount of time he claimed in his warranty. He did after all sell something to me and many others with a 3 year warranty and then folded up his tent one year later, breaking his promise.

I don't think apologies are necessary. Tom and Pammy are off doing other things and and I very much doubt that they would have any problems with you sharing what you have.

Neither do I.

Has there been a communique stating that he would not allow the instructions to be shared?

A warranty is only good if the company is still in business. It is only common sense that ANY company who goes out of business will have customers who have warranties that will then become null and void. I would venture a guess and say that this has happened with thousands of companies, be they retail and/or manufacturing companies.

In my opinion, if he stated in writing that the warranties would be honored regardless if they were in business or not, and then he went out of business and did not honor the warranties, than yes, I would agree that it is a promise broken, but anytime I buy ANYTHING, I ALWAYS assume that the warranty will only be valid for as long as the company remains in business. To assume otherwise, imho, is a bit naive.

Edit: One more thing which I think I need to clarify. I have always been a big supporter of both Tom and Pammy, but if, after all this time of being out of business, Tom refused anyone of having instructions on how to repair their PD's, I would be right there, out front, calling him an asshole. Just sayin'........

I would like to know this as well. Because if the company is out of business, what would be the problem with posting the material copyrighted by a company that no longer exists?

I inferred when he said 'sorry Tom and Pammy and the people who liked' that he meant sorry Tom for publishing your proprietary information and sorry those of you who wanted to get your hands on the info.

With all due respect, the business about warranties jest nacherly becomin' null and void is sophistry. A warranty is a promise. Legally the business owner is probably still liable for this promise, unless the company and or the owner is bankrupt. I am ok with not getting any warranty service on the PD. The truth is 3 years was too long. The units were going kaput in less than a year. Longevity was not a strong point of the design he copied and modified. However, if it turns out Tom is insisting the instructions be taken down then yeah, he goes down another notch in my esteem.

Agree completely with the warranty issue as mine is affected by that...I'm not going to complain that the business shut down and can't honor it and that "build guide" is a dang good step-by-step.

If Tom was still lurking on these forums and contacted UB to have it pulled, I might be a little miffed.

For those who haven't seen it, it is just a straight forward assembly guide with pictures (no copyright info on the text or pics) on building the PV. Past a few "tips" on how to assemble it a bit easier I can't see this as proprietary information...and the rest is the same as what iFixit or TechRestore produce for the iPad or other tech devices for help repairing them...I haven't seen them receive a C&D request on their site from Apple.

(Take previous paragraph a a calm, relaxed tone....not stirring the pot)

If we are still kicking it around by the weekend, I'll produce an open source guide to (dis)-assembly of a generic log vape with my own pics (and vapes)

THAT general statement is just not true. My PD is still going strong being on 24/7 for 4 years straight. The very first retaining ring that I had to add happened on the 3rd year. There are many others here who also have gone wayyyyy beyond your "kaput in less than a year" scenario. Now granted, there may be some here who have had issues with their PD within the first year, but that could be said for ANY vape.

Don't quibble. The point is he promised more than he could deliver. Mine got loose enough (knowing what I now know from looking at the instructions) to be a fire hazard in less than a year.

As long as you continue to make false and misleading statements, I will continue to quibble. Out of the THOUSANDS of PD's that have been sold, I have NEVER heard of one unit causing a fire. Not one in either one year of use or 4 years of use. Not a one.

Did you get the instructions? If you did you know that a loose core constitutes a fire hazard. Bare wires sitting very close to each other, maybe touching steel too... arcing is possible. One guy up the thread mentioned seeing arcing. All of this shit wiggling around every time you pick it up, weakening the strength of the wires, and this is happening in an extremely hot area inside surrounded by hot, charred wood...

And another thing (waggles finger humorously at Lwien), you take 1.35 hits off that PD per day, right? No wonder it lasted so long. Some of us are into the countless hits thing. For me at least, if a PD is my main appliance, three years is wildly optimistic. But even you, Lwien, the ultimate minimalist user, had problems by three years in. I rest my case: the warranty period was too long.

And you know, this is probably why Rick changed his Aromazap design to the Rockzap and why the PD and Woodeez stopped doing business: the basic design of the eTerra had a flaw which limited longevity of the device and probably overwhelmed the makers with warranty work.

1.35 hits? Where'd ya get that from? I go from 3/4 to one stem a night. A few days ago, I got some over-the-top bud that worked on a half a stem for me. I get 5 hits per stem.

For me, any vape being on for 24/7 for four years (and still have it working and providing me the most in efficient vapor, regardless of having to put in a few retaining rings or not), is good enough for me. And I don't see how one who takes more hits than I, would cause additional wear and tear.

The one issue I do have, and that I have mentioned previously, is my concern of breathing in the fumes from charred wood over the long haul. That, I think, could be a health concern due to fumes and smoke from burning wood being a carcinogen. On the other hand, I would never think about not enjoying a warm fireplace or campfire. For me, I would much rather have a cleaner air path, especially at my age, and is the reason that I'm seriously contemplating an LSV.

With all that being said though, I really do wear my "ultimate minimalist user" badge proudly, and I firmly believe that the main contributor to this is my super efficient PD. I have no doubt that the LSV will cause my usage to increase.

I'm rather fond of that warm piece of cherry wood. It's become a comforting friend for more than a few years and still is to this day.

If anyone is planning to re-build their PD, I would recommend using uninsulated butt connectors (tin plated) for making the electrical connections to the resistor. The wires are just slipped into the ends and then crimped shut for a mechanically / electrically secure connection. It is very easy to apply lead free solder into the connector for an absolutely rock solid connection. Select a connector size that is appropriate for the wire you are using. They should be available at most hardware stores.
The connectors will keep any soldered connections far away from the resistor. Any soldered connections in contact or very close to the resistor will become molten and the solder will fall away which will reduce the electrical conductivity. This is probably why some had reported solder beads falling out of their units and possibly the cause for some heating failures.
Another recommendation is to install glass insulating beads on the wires to the resistor. This will prevent them from shorting out and insulate the wood from the hot wires. The bend in the wires when it goes to the SS screws will prevent the glass beads from sliding off. The SS screws will support and retain the resistor. This will also allow both wires to pass through the center hole so that you can install a 1" diameter fender washer at the bottom of the hole and close off the wood bottom. The washer at the bottom will move the heat exchanger up just slightly so that the clip will have new wood to grab. The washer at the bottom will give it an all stainless air path. The glass beads should eliminate any burned wood smell.
If your 1" SS sleeve is really loose and comes out of the hole, a whack with a hammer on the side of the sleeve will deform it and make a tighter fit in the wood. You just want to make sure that the heat exchanger will still fit into the sleeve.
Hopefully, this can help breath new life into some tired and weary PDs.

Oh yeah, I discovered that I can just machine down one side of my new SS dimple tips so that they will fit into a PD or Zap. Silicone sleeve roasting tubes also have been reported to work with the PD.

Happy modding to everyone.

People need to stop coming into this thread and bashing Tom and Pam and suggesting they shut down the business due to waranty issues. It has been documented in this thread several times that they stopped for some pretty serious health reasons. This thread is open for the sole purpose of supporting the PD users still out there. The negative statements about the company and its owners are not part of that support.

Personally, I think the Pandora instructions could be very useful here. And their posting would be in the spirit of why Tom even made the Pandora. I can't think of any reason not to get as fully detailed about the innards of this vape for the community that is left to repair them on their own.
