Hey if you guys blast on it be sure not to take any dabbers/razors or anything like that to the surface. Silicone will NOT dissolve or anything with non-polar compounds, but it will swell/warp slightly. So if you end up scraping the silicone off with a tool of some sort its on you! The product does work but you must use the folding technique, can't use abrasives cause the silicone isn't indestructible and pieces could flake off...it just will absolutely not dissolve in butane

http://www.silicone.jp/e/catalog/pdf/rubber_e.pdf
"Silicone rubber also has excellent resistance to
solvents and other chemicals. It is essentially
unaffected by polar organic compounds (aniline,
alcohol, etc.) or dilute acids or bases, with the
increase in volume due to swelling in the range of only
10%–15%. Silicone rubber does swell in non-polar
organic compounds like benzene, toluene and
gasoline; but unlike most organic rubbers, it does not
decompose or dissolve, and will return to its former
state when the solvent is removed. Silicone rubber is,
however, adversely affected by strong acids and
bases, so it should not be used where it will come in
contact with such chemicals."

Thats what I am looking for though, i dont wanna have to touch the stuff if i can avoid it... id rather fold and fold and fold than scrape scrape scrape! I always end up with enough waste that Im a little ashamed of it... but im lazy and there is always more to make:ko:

plus, i store in a glass or tin so im more looking to get it for processing/ purging as opposed to storage, so i will prolly never have a dabber (or a blade:tup:) near it.

Marcellus, Thank you for the swelling heads up, had you not mentioned that I would have freaked for sure when I saw it and prolly dumped the whole run!

NP man! By the way if you have a heating pad or something like that, it's a great way to get the oil collected on the slick, after the liquid butane is done purging put the slick on a heating pad on high and the heat transfer on the slick is pretty good and you can just kinda end up folding it all together using the heat from the heating pad.

Im hoping that this will improve my mess making and Im gonna switch up my butane to vector or back to fasfil and see if i have improvements over using Lucienne... Fasfil is local, Vector is a 1.5 hr drive or a case online... Now stepping into the ring Better Judgment vs. COST!

I have used both Lucienne and vector and even done side-by-sides and they basically are exactly the same IMO. I can just get a slightly better price for lucienne (unless I buy like 10 cases then theres a florida supplier for like 24$/case, google it)

That slick pad looks nice. I was actually trying to think of some kind of solution to this as I hate scraping, too. Best I could think of was a parchment paper liner or something, but I never tried it.

edit: I just searched google for "silicone baking" and found these silicone baking mats.

Was going to do a run, but I might wait till tomorrow when I can get one.

Dannkk, do some checking on that spacific grade silicone, i remember reading on another forum someone else had this idea but it was unsuitable for the purpose... It was either too thick or the silicone was diffrent... Cant remember...

You guys sure it needs to be treated? I found this PDF about silicone and it says it does not break down in solvents.

On page 6: http://www.silicone.jp/e/catalog/pdf/rubber_e.pdf

It says it is "essentially unaffected by non polar solvents." It says that it causes the silicone to swell, but it returns to normal when removed from the solvent.

I got some blue dream wax last nite got an 1/8 that looks like amber laffy taffy . Stuff is so stable i love it, it makes loading carts a breeze. I just pull off a chunk roll it to the shape i need and melt it down in. No fuss no mess its great.

Did some more looking into silicone and solvents.

First, the first slickpads were exactly the same as silicone baking mats. They just manufactured them themselves and used a green border and a logo. Over time they found they didn't hold up to multiple butane purges straight onto the mat. They thickened it, added more weave, and eventually went to a new formulation of silicone. Went from food-grade to medical-grade. These are the main differences. They made these changes so that the mat would stand up to numerous butane purges and heat while purging. I guess the baking mats break up pretty quick when you spray butane straight onto it, while it's on heat, like the guy in the video on the last page.

I make qwiso and all the information I could find on the reaction between ISO and silicone says that it is safe. The silicone will swell, but will return to normal after the ISO evaporates. ISO is actually suggested to clean many silicone medical supplies and every data sheet I could find said that silicone is highly resistant to ISO. I'm going to snag a baking mat next time I go out and try it. Should work fine for what I'm doing at the moment.

:( Let it dry for 14 hours. The oil formed a seal over the last of the water so it didn't evap. Gotta wait a while longer to see how it worked.

edit: Worked fine. Was disapointed at first...oil was sticking to the pad. I heated it up a couple times to purge out more water, though, and then it worked great. FuckScraping.

On a Permanent Vakation
I may be investing in a few of these Slick Pads :\ every time I come to this forum, I end up adding something to the "need to buy" list :|

I've decided to cut my SSTB to be able to do 1/8th or less runs. I like the idea of being able to make smaller batches for sample purposes, with new strains, and for the easier purge. I still don't have a vac, and while I'm managing to get stable clear sap/shatter, with no bubbles, etc...it takes a little time without a vac. The less oil/solvent in the dish,(more surface area per unit of oil) the easier to purge out the solvent.

So, before I took the pipe cutter to it (which went great) I did one last larger run. Every time I do a run, I keep the bud from it in a jar afterwards. I have a decent amount now, and decided it was time for a second run with it all! I didn't weigh anything in or out, just filled the baster, and ran
bho.gif

The stuff came out nice looking, and smelling, for second run. I haven't dabbed any yet, waiting on my glass to dry.

Edit* I'll post pics of my first small run, when I go to the dispensary next!

Fuck yea MW, that would be awesome... I had been considering PTFE bags to spray in before deciding to try to Oil Slick pad... I will be getting the PTFE for spraying when it comes out i got the 8.5x11 and that can be retired to my dab bar pad... im thinking of even getting a small one or two and one of the balls to store in as an upgrade from this tin I use.
I can honestly say that my only issue was trying to combine using hot water and the mat in conjunction... i ended up having half my unpurged butane/oil mix pouring into my hot water.... so guess who had to scrap and clean anyways . i will never involve water in my runs again... i went and got a new pancake griddle just to call my own. that and a pyrex I stole from the misses and ill never have to fuck with boiling water OR SCRAPING again!

To anyone sitting on the fence regarding a oil slick pad... coming from a true skeptic... go get it. the one i got can be had for 16 bucks... i looked at some of the silicon baking pad and some... though larger... were just as if not more expensive in store around me.

Worth it! :2c:

Apparently the Slick guys are making a PTFE (teflon) pad for blasting onto. Since silicone does swell and degrade they are putting more money into the blasting side of things. Looking forward to it should make things so easy!

where can i find more info on this? :)

Could you not just blast onto a thick PTFE sheet? I mean... if it can be sourced... why not... im gonna look...

yea you can, the issue is just finding the surface and coating of teflon that works best with the errl. I've tried certain types of teflon sheets before and it was almost more annoying than glass getting it all together just because of the type of material. i just haven't found one I personally like

I'm planning on getting into making errl, and I have researched it quite a bit. I am set on doing small runs, 3.5-5 grams (my tube is glass, got it from Etsy and it holds 1-5 grams) and have everything i need except a vac...I was reading on other sites about vac purging and was convinced I needed to do it; however, after going over this thread it may not be entirely true for runs as small as what I am doing. I was set on getting a hand vac (most likely a brake bleeder from Autozone, mightyvac if thats what they have) but not having to buy a vac right away would be excellent.

So is it feasible to not vac and still get a tasty, safely purged product? I planned on using the standard water bath, and then an oven and a torch to raze bubbles. My biggest fear is getting stuff that reeks even after purging and thats my goal to avoid, if I get budder or wax, thats unfortunate, but I would still be fine with it if it didn't smell and taste awful.

And lastly, I'm not exactly sure how many runs of butane I should be doing through my material if its this small of runs... is blasting the material once and purging that good enough? I have heard of people doing multiple runs with the same material but i'm not sure if that makes a worse product or if its worth it.

i ordered two oil slick pads after reading about them here...will be in heaven if it means no more scraping and loss along the way :)

Also, nobody seems to have noticed that in the movie on previous page they are spraying indoors, onto an electric hotplate if i can see that correctly...I would think twice about doing that.

I have another question to you experts out there ;) i destroyed my previous glass dessicator by heating it up in water that was too hot. I do not want to risk that again, seeing it is a pretty expansive piece f equipment. I am doing fairly large runs, but am thinking about doing it in smaller pieces because the pruging is difficult if you cannot get and keep the product heated up. Any suggestions on this? I am thinking of just using a hairdryer to heat it up that way in between vacuum purging...Or is there a way to safely heat up my glass dessicator without running the risk of the glass cracking again?

I have to addmit, my attention might have slipped for a little bit, and the dessicator might have actually touched the buttom of the hot water bath, meaning it was in direct contact with the heat source, being an electric coocking plate...Is it possible for glass to crack at temps arround boiling point of water?

VAPOLITICS!
No glass should not crack because of 100° c temps. IMO...
Yes you are totally right the video in previous page is WHAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO!
About the slick pads kit:

It arrived today, and it is awesome!

No scraping, no loss, no fuss! The ball is an awesome on the go container and dish!
Got 2 gr. (on the left: 1st run, nugs uncrushed/on the right: 2nd run, nugs hand crushed) of white budder out of 12gr. of medium quality nugs: 16,5%...I'm happy!
