regulated vs unregulated power supplies for "log vapes"

Well I have had that little PS sitting on my desk for what seems like almost two weeks now feeling lonely without a POD to use it with. Looks like I am going to have to order a cord and make it for myself in the mean time and try with some of the other logs. A bit too impatient to wait for the one from hazy. I hope everything is moving along well though, the anticipation is driving me crazy!

Aside from thee Tattoo power supplies I have had these power supply for over a year now and its my favorite of them all. I even have a back up one just in case. A bit tough to find sometimes since radioshack doesnt always have this model in stock, but I did come up with one on ebay.

Just one left though! Its really great because on the wall jack it has 9v 10.2v 12v and 13v. I always switch it to 9v when I am not using the log and when I want to vape just bump it back to 12 or 13 and within a minute or two you are ready to go. No extras needed, great for someone who doesnt want to make their own cord for the tattoo power supply.

What's that shop you're referring to in your sign btw Sticks? Do you actually have a shop, or did you break all of those vapes and have them fixed right now? lol

The shop is in my mind where vapes sit until I get around to fixing them. In this case, the Ion is in transit back to me after repair, the HI is waiting for me to get a plug for the power supply and the beta Cloud died and I will end up with a production model soon.

Aww, poor beta Cloud. My condolences :(

Good thing they are only temporary visitors though. Did you ask Dave for the cord or didn't he have them in stock yet?

For the love of the Vapor Gods... someone send that man a damn plug/cord!

I think my cheapo VVPS is taking a dump. The voltage reads consistent... but its certainly not translating to the HI. What's probably happening is the voltage is taking a crap with the load of the vape. I've inspected the plug, cord and the HI works great with the OEM PS. Now to decide between the more expensive Hildebrandt or this new mini supply?

I gotta tell ya I am digging my new little PS, had it set to 12.1 last night for a few hours in the shop running my WW, didnt want to run it to high, have some amazing strawberry cough and blue widow, used my zap bubbler with it and was blowing hella clouds. This PS is the SHIT!

Thanks for posting it Hazy!

It seems to hold up good so far, but it's still a bit of a gamble atm I guess.

For what it costs the gamble isn't to big though, and if you don't leave yours on 24/7 I wouldn't be worried at all personally.

But, I can't look in to your wallet. The smaller one does seem more convenient though, since you like to take your HI over to friends houses too.

My PSU came in too yesterday, pretty quick if you ask me.

My voltage control knob seems to turn pretty smooth though, it would be possible to accidentally change the voltage if you're careless so pay attention where you place it during use if you get one that doesn't turn as heavy as the one Hazy got.

When I was looking for cords I also came across a red version of this PSU by the way: click me

This one is quite a bit more expensive though, and comes with some accessories that are of no real use to a vaporists. But, if style matters..

Glad to hear you got yours OTA. My knob is pretty smooth also, I set it to desired voltage before hooking it up, has been running my WW all morning long!

Good to hear Ed!

I don't have the cord or plug to actually hook it up to a vape just yet, but do you feel yours gets hot at all on the outside after a few hours of use?

And what sort of power cable did yours come with btw? I expected to receive one with a USA or AUS plug that I couldn't use but wouldn't have mind that because it has a modular power cable and I have plenty of cords from old radio's and stuff that I could have used. But to my surprise mine came with a EU plug even, so the seller actually seems to pay attention where they ships them to.

Still waiting for my PSU! I problably should get started on getting the cable, just need to go to an electric store and ask for a dc cable with 2.1mm conector and a jack on the other, is that right guys? Or did you got yours on ebay or smth? :hmm:

Considering this has 9V and 12V do you think it could work as a double adapter for the SOLO? Or is the amperage not enough?

Oh hi again :)

You could just get one of these and put a 2,1mm plug on one end.

I use my vv as a direct power source for the Solo on 8,5V btw, I'm not even sure if 9V works and I don't feel comfortable testing it to be honest, sorry.

But you'll need something that is able to put out 2,8A at least if mine is any example, I'd go with 3A just to be sure. It only draws that much in the beginning when it starts to heat up for short time, but still.

I got the standard US plug and no it doesnt get hot at all. Works really well.

Awesome, & they really adapt those plugs to where we live then. First time I've seen that so far.

Thanks OTA, do you think hazy's PSU would work at 2,8A then? In the bottom of my solo it says 9V for heating and 12V for charging, so i'm confident it would work at 9V. You don't notice different in temps using it half a volt down?

I still haven't received mine, getting jumpy, i want to try the WW with different voltages and see how it behaves.

The power supply says 1,5A on it, so I think it's safe to assume it's too light to power a Solo that way. I'm afraid most affordable PSUs you'll find in general will be too light, if not all. Most seem to crap out at 1,5A, some go up to 2A but I don't think I've seen much more from the cheaper VVs and the tattoo PSUs. In hindsight I got pretty lucky with this versatile beast of mine, most things with similar capabilities cost at least 2 or 3 times as much.

It says 9V on my Solo as well, but the people who tried it with a VV psu early on in the Solo thread couldn't get it to work at that voltage (I was never able to verify what the maximum wattage of their PSU was unfortunately).

Plus the original Solo PSU puts out a measured 8,5V too, so I'm sticking to it

I know how you feel, I got the same thing with a Gnome that probably became a victim of red tape @ local customs, just when I have all the time for thorough testing this weekend :(

edit: no temp issues with the Solo btw, it performs exactly the same as on battery power. Even the annoying 12 min timer keeps working :cuss:

Just received another tattoo power supply
I just got my one in yesterday, thanks for recommending it :D
My one came with an aus power plug (without me specifying:tup:) and the knob is nice and snug.

I like how small it is, It'll certinly become my portable VVPS, I'm just debating whether I should pick up a hildebrandt to have a high quality VVPS for at home:shrug:

I'm going to hold off on the Hildebrandt for now. I discovered my VVPS isn't going bad. The plug was just ever so slightly dislodged. The OEM is a bit more snug fit, so I wasn't noticing as much, but my HI did seem to be running cool. It was just that last little "click" to.

Anyway, the deal was too good to pass up. $14 free shipping.

What a guy!
Nice find I was able to snag one off eBay for $12.69 shipped air! Since I have a nice new Hot Pod on it's way I'll need another VVPS. :)

My lit'l vvps arrived from eBay/china yesterday. Wow!! That was quick. Things have taken twice as long going east to west coast! Hooked it up to the UD twig and levFC BUBBLER. Wewhhooooaaaaa!!!! Awesomeness has been achieved. Its the holy trinity of vape! It looks like BDV found the same one in amazon but it seems the amazon one goes to 20v. Either way, quite a good deal for a small digital vvps. Time will tell how it holds up but for now, I'm happy.

I also picked up a switching adapter from radio shack. The one that GVapes recommended. That's pretty cool too. It can sit out on the desk without looking 'suspicious' and the quick bump Down voltage switch should add some dog years to the twigs life.

Nice finds guys. Thanks for the heads up on them.

Well, my VVPS just blew up in my hands :(

I was moving it from 1 outlet to another, and when I plugged it in, I heard a loud ish "pop", and the display no longer lights up :(

I'm gonna contact the eBay seller to see if I can get a replacement.

I had my hot pod connected to the VVPS while plugging it in, im not sure if that was the issue, but maybe be wary of that?
It's a nice power supply aside from that though, I'll probably just buy another if I can't get a replacement.

Yeah, lets hope this is an insulated incident. Just let me know if they won't replace it for free though Fred, I would like to reflect it in the feedback I still owe them on a couple of units I haven't received yet if they don't send you another one under warranty.

It shouldn't be necessary but it can't hurt to remove the vape before plugging it into an outlet just in case, since these don't have an off-switch.
