Hm, it would have to have some force to be able to push the stem out, not sure that would be enough to make it happen.

what about fastening a washer on top of any spring that has the right resistance? Then the exact diameter would not be an issue.

Thats sounds like a good idea, how would you fasten the two together though? Would have to be super strong and would have to handle the continuous action.

I like this idea. if the spring were wide enough in diameter it might not need to be fastened at all. Just drop the spring in, then the washer, then the stem.

JB Weld is pretty tough stuff.. Just bend the last part of the coil to create a relatively flat surface, run a bead of JB Weld, put it on top of the spring.... When it cures, drop the whole thing in the dugout.

Well, I work in a business where we use various types and densities of rubber. I was thinking if you took a round of medium density foam rubber (squishy, without being flimsy) with the same size round of a more dense (not foam) rubber plied together and then simply glued into the bottom of the stem holder. When you put your stem in it's spot, the softer foam rubber would collapse a quarter inch or 3/8s and you could close the top. When the top is swung open, the stem would pop up for your enjoyment.

I think it will require something that will give at least 1/2" of "ups", and I don't think the rubber in the LB pushback ring would be able to "pop up" more than a couple of millimeters. Maybe 4 or 5 pushback rings together might work (or the equivalent volume in one big chunk)?

Some sort of actual spring (with a disk platform) seems to me like it would be the most elegant solution imo.

I'm very interested in a Solo Dug-out as well! Seems like one of those, "How come someone didn't think of that earlier?"
Also love the brainstorming going on. Pretty cool to have an engineering issue, throw it out into the forum, and a number of passionately involved people start problem solving.

Ed, please talk to Hazy about creating a stem for the Hot Pod! I may be the only one that has one so far but they will be popular and one of your stems would enhance the experience very nicely.

krebs is there any way I could get some of it? Am still gonna get the washers today and see how they work this week. Would like to have something to fall back on if they dont work out. Am hoping the JBWeld is gonna be strong enough to hold the bond between the spring and the washer. Havent had a whole lota luck outa JBWeld lately.

Adobewan, maybe I can get this spring issue solved and you can get one of the remaining dugouts I have. I too think its great to have an issue have so many folks brainstorm it and try to find a fix. I was at a loss there.

I appreciate you trying in the vid Stu, seems like it may work but you would have to have more than one in the bottom, just not thinking there would be enough force to really pop the stem out. You may still have to turn it upside down to get the stem out.

or other option some foam sponge of the right thickness, holesawed to your'e chamber diameter.

only issue there might be the notched hot edge of the solo bowl during use shredding or melting into that foam over time.I guess most people will drop their stems in bowl side up into the dugout but in the circumstances used i wouldn't bet on that.You could just glue a thin piece of wood ontop of the sponge to stop wear and tear.although thin wood glued to sponge separation might be an issue down the track with regular use.Eds stuff is for Life!

I m thinking a spring is simple best,slide the lid & pop the stem out into your e hand with ease.Everyone likes simple and easy!

have you allowed extra width in the stem part of the dugout for a mflb battery cap on the solo bowl? they fit great ,will take up very little space inside your'e dugout and will mean you can go with a preloaded stem in there and not worry about herbs falling out of the stem into the bottom of the dugout all over that nice spring.Just 3 mm extra diameter more than the stem or so should be enough.should keep everyones dugouts real tidy inside while out and about.

I'm sure you could pre-load, but doesn't that defeat the point of the dugout in the first place? I mean its made to be able to not have to pre-load and be able to load on the go.

Yes, Ed, I can probably send you a couple samples of the materials that I had in mind. I'm not sure if I have any die stamps big enought for the diameter of the solo tube. I'll check it out tomorrow. I do think that battery spring looks like a better idea to me.. and a disk of wood over that would be a VERY nice touch.. I love this thread.. so much excitement of such a simple product..

hey vape I haven t really seen the dugout in great detail, but Eds questions about the spring led me on to other things like design features which i love in products .I think its good to have choice to carry a part vaped stem or an empty stem in your'e dugout depending on the situation.

The reason i mentioned a cap is because sometimes i carry the same stem and take hits as i go from the same bowl so cap my stem to conserve, or because of where i am.

Saying that though,I guess if the stem is a good fit in the dugout stem chamber,herb wont fall down into it if its carried bowl side up.the lid of the dugout should hold it in place.in that case who needs a cap

I use my solo only on occasion now. its still a good choice for out and about..i have two Lbs .one my new one is awful just doesn t heat up and will be returned.my older koa box hits like a champ so i use it a lot..But its good to see such another fine piece of functional art coming along from Ed

I hope all is well out there, I think I said I have gotten slammed all of a sudden. I am trying to finish up a 100 solo stems for the pin install and then just got another huge order for LB stems. Am gonna be in the shop the next few days as much as possible. Even have to contract some extra labor to help me get all this done. I am gonna give the spring washer idea a try in the next couple so hopefully by saturday I will have an update for the solo dugout. I do so much and offer so many products that some have become out of stock and others have been out of stock, I gotta get my ass in gear and get some pieces knocked out.

Here I am back to time and trying to find some, if anyone knows where to find some pls let me know! Pls hang in there with me is all I ask!
