Foam Rollers……...

Anyone here use one. Thinking seriously about getting one. Heard that they can be pretty painful, but great for loosening up muscles.

I'm a runner and I think that my quads are getting kinda tight which is causing me a bit of knee pain and i heard that these can be a godsend in that regard.

Oh man, I love mine. I was introduced to them after my 1st out of 3 knee surgeries. I had a really good physical rehab guy who suggested them to me. I roll out my calves, quads, hamstrings, and IT bands when I use it. Just a FYI, one of the rollers I have has too dense of foam - it's actually almost painful when I'm using my body weight on it. Might not be a bad idea to feel the foam before you buy.

Yeah, I heard that pain kinda comes with the territory when using these, but man, almost everyone that has used one swears by it and say that they are pissed that they didn't hear about them sooner.

I'm weighing in at 211 lbs now, so I gotta get one that's pretty dense otherwise I heard that they can wear out pretty quick.

Looking at this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846

….based on this report: http://www.mikereinold.com/2010/05/best-foam-rollers-and-self-massage.html

Seems pretty credible in that this guy is the guy that a lot of PT's go for for advice.

Heard the Grid is pretty good to, but not good for one who is a roller newbie.

Peloton,
I use the grid and it's awesome. I don't see any problem with it for noobs either. I mainly use it to stretch out my legs, tore my acl, mcl, and meniscus and had surgery over a year ago. The thing helps out so much.

Yeah, I was thinking' about the Grid, but I've heard from many that it's a bit too intense if you're not used to rolling.

Also, I'm a pretty big guy………….6'2" at 210 lbs, and I want to use this roller for my back as well as my legs and considering how big I am, the 12" Grid looks like it would be just too small for my back. I know they make a 26 inch one, but that one 3 times as much as the PB.

lwien,
It's intense but it works. I'm not as tall but 5'10" 200lbs and athletic a I use it for my backs and hips as well. Even though it's short I like it better because of the ease of use due to the size. Another good roller is the rumble roller. You might want to look into that one too. I think it comes Ina regular and a stiff. As well as a long and a short size I'm pretty sure. And neither the rumble roller or grid will wear out. Rumble roller has an stiff inner core and the grid is built around a thick plastic ring

The 2 I have been looking at are

http://www.amazon.com/Trigger-Point...ie=UTF8&qid=1350879583&sr=8-4&keywords=roller

and

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FDB7CW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=A1L9NKXDNACY0J

The 2nd link looks to be more painful but ones body should get used to it after 5 to 10 uses and I think it looks to be the better of the 2. I'm not sure how much relief the 1st link roller will provide to me but it seems to get good reviews and is cheaper, but smaller. I think I'll eventually get the 2nd link roller and hope it provides relief on my back. (6'5)

The 2nd link roller comes in a smaller size for $45 here.

http://www.amazon.com/OPTP-RR316-Ru...&qid=1350880685&sr=1-1&keywords=rumble+roller

There is also an extra firm that will probably hurt a little more. If you have really bad knots that may be for you. You can select that box too.

You'll have to forgive the derail lwien, but when I saw the title to this thread, I went here.... and for the life of me couldn't figure out what the hell you were doing with them.

I started foam rolling about 2 years ago on the advice of a physical therapist , and am hooked . i use a smooth , dense , closed-cell roller -http://www.performbetter.com/webapp...ProductDisplayErro?kbid=3526&img=2066PS_2.jpg .
Rolling the knots out of the fascia is supposed to increase the length of resting muscles and reduce the trigger points that muscles tend to bunch around . I've noticed a reduced frequency of muscle cramps during and after working out and a general improvement in flexibility . The first few sessions may result in a little soreness , but the longterm reesults have been a lifesaver for me . If you aren't sure i would suggest trying an open-cell roller at first , but i suspect it will just make you crave one of the harder ones . good luck !

^^ That's exactly the one I have !!

I was thinking about starting out with a softer one, but then that old phrase came back to mind.................."Aw...........fuck it". ;)

It's also great when your back is feeing a bit sore. 2 min. on the roller and that stiffness/pain is gone.

Chiros are utterly useless, dangerous fucks as far as I'm concerned - but I do get some relief from trigger point massage "myotherapy". But my foam roller - personalised and accurate relief for as long as I need it when my back seizes up with radiating muscle spasms triggered by nerve damage. Priceless! :)

I've had mine for years but find I need to use it more and more these days, I suspect things are getting worse on the chronic pain front for me, but glad I've got the roller! And my ThermoVape DART! :D

Foam rolling was a godsend to me when I used to hit the gym. I would always get bad knee pain, and after a bit of research, I made sure to do some foam rolling before and after my workout and the pain was gone. In my case, I just needed to stretch out those tight muscles.

Edit: Just thought I would mention, that in my case at least, knee pain was caused by tight hip and hamstring muscles.
