Vaporizer Discussion Split and a Review Section

Vtac I agree with everything you said on your last post. Nice points.

Is it possible to put approved objective reviews in the Wiki? I know when I came here years ago the Wiki was pretty bare and that was unfortunate as I had to dig through a shitload of posts to get an accurate picture of the vape world. Now the Wiki is much better but I think if we could throw in a handful or so of objective reviews per vape, users could get a quick handle on the scene even if they have been gone for months.

If it's designed to be used when plugged in, it's a home unit. Portables have a self-contained power supply or need flame. Devices that need to be plugged to recharge are portable.

ETA: That's my definition and not necessarily the forum's, although I suspect they are the same.
IMO your definition is the only way to go. Models will be classified by power source, not by where they're primarily used, and once the definition is understood, there should be no problem about which section to shop. If the vape comes standard with an AC cord, it's a home unit. The MF is AC by option only, and is therefore a portable. If a battery powered portable can be used while charging, via AC outlet, that doesn't make it a home unit. Any flame powered model is a portable, even if nobody uses it outside their home. You can still carry it around, using a self contained power source. If you're vaping at home and you can do so during a power outage, you're using a portable. A UPS or generator doesn't count, since you're still providing AC. This is, by far, the easiest way to draw the line, and will result in the least amount of confusion.

What we have now are monumentally long threads for each vaporizer model. It's not that easy to search a long thread so lots of info is in there but not terribly accessible because of the linear format. The division of vaporizers into home and portable is great but dividing the subject matter in half doesn't go far enough in addressing this difficulty, IMO. Just throwing out some ideas here how about a granular enough hierarchy that there would be a section for Log Vapes, within that threads for the several brands available, a repair issues thread for matters common to log vapes, formal reviews, comparison threads, usage and demos, Q & A etc. Maybe this would be possible by first divvying up vapes into 5 or 10 big categories, then drill down within each category.

Another vaped thought. Have you ever keyed out the latin names of species using taxonomy in botany or zoology? It starts with some big questions and then more detailed so you drill down. How about a similar vape selection key out? Could go in the wiki. Home or portable? Portable ->Battery operated? etc etc

Subdividing the model threads seems like a good idea, but it actually doesn't really solve anything. It just presents a different set of problems. People would still be uncertain about which thread to read or post in, leading to off-topic and cross-posting. Instead of a single thread to search there would be several. It would be a lot more work to moderate. Some of the subdivisions you propose (e.g. repairs for log vapes) aren't model-specific and wouldn't fall into this hierarchy anyway.

The idea of creating a "vapourizer taxonomy" or something similar has been discussed a few times. Everyone agrees it would be great but whenever someone attempts to create one, the project dies. It's quite difficult because of the variety and novelty out there, not to mention that new designs have been appearing so fast that it's hard to keep up. I welcome and support your attempt to create such a key, and wish you sincere good luck.

What's ideal for members and what we're willing and able to setup and moderate are two different things. In some cases spreading info out into various categories can make it just as hard to find as digging it out of the vape thread. It also prompts duplication of info in many cases. Sections for log vapes will likely prompt the same request for pocket portables, whip vapes, wand types, etc. Allowing too many options for new and varied threads increases mod chores exponentially, and we're not interested in significantly increasing staff size to deal with a lot more threads, and deciding which ones have merit. This is all volunteer work and we all have real life obligations, and having all staff members on the same page, for management consistency, is important. That old saying 'too many cooks spoil the broth' does apply here.

I often think about classification. I just sort of drew up this list the other day.

Home Units:

Bag (Volcano and others)
Whip (SSV, VaporBrothers, and others)
Direct/WaterPipe (Cloud, VHW, and others)
Log (UD, PD, HI, and others)
Hybrid (viVape, HerbalAire, and others)
Portable Units:

Cordless/Battery (Solo, VaporBlunt, PAX, and others)
Butane (ioLite, The Hammer, Waldo, and others)
Discreet (Any stealthy portable for "Public Use" like the MFLB, PAX, ThermoVape, and others.)
Hybrid (Any Portable that is a mix of the other categories.)

Every submitted review will require staff approval before it's visible. That process will be unforgiving by most people's standards and unfortunately many submissions will be rejected - probably even the majority . . . Objective reviews should be able to stand on their own because they're factual . . .What do we mean by "objective review"? A well-written, thorough, and thoughtful account not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts, undistorted by emotion or personal bias, and based on observable phenomena. Basically heavy on science and light on opinion. Of course there will be some opinion, but it will and must be stated as such.
Can we expect this on non vapoizer reviews as well? I think it would be a good idea, at least on vapor related equipment. I offer RezBlock as an example. Combined with the communication I received from the manufacturer, the substance almost defies objective, unemotional, review. I think I am 6 months in and still learning about the chemistry of whats going on here and why, however, I'm glad I never posted a review and am considering a diffuser medium thread instead.

And, if a mod can alter a post like this, why can't they modify material they want to stand out in a thread as well? I understand the process isn't automated, sorry :|

That is not a drug, it’s a plant.....
As a relatively new vaper, separate subs for portables vs home vapes would be ideal. I haven't heard of a lot of the vapes listed, so this separation will save me valuable time as I continue to search for a portable companion for my home use log.

What a guy!
... repair issues thread...usage and demos, Q & A etc.

As I read through everyone's ideas the same thought occurred to me. Is there a way to create a "How to" section? I know that I've learned a lot watching how to videos by Uncle Vito and others. These would be non- opinionated instructional posts and videos. Simply; step 1, step 2, step 3 etc.

Thoughts?

Vitolo or someone will post a video embed in a model specific thread, people nod appreciatively and then it gets buried under sedimentary rock 30 pages back. If all such embedded demos were posted with a descriptive thread title (or possibly one demo thread per vape? There probably would only be dozens of video entries per vape so easy to scan through) in one section and then linked to in the model specific threads, there would be a place to go and look for how-to videos. Just an idea.

I think it would be helpful to link to reviews in vaporpedia articles.

 No need to split hairs.

All submitted reviews will undergo similar scrutiny, accessory or otherwise. I think it will be easy enough to tell if an accessory review is objective or not.

Mods can edit posts, but as you say it's a manual process, and it also doesn't address the issues outlined in my previous post.

I'm glad that we're all of a similar mind on this. We should start with the Home/Portable split this week and the Review section shortly after.

ah ha! welcome to the future.
:science:

Threads have been moved into the new Portables section and a bit of re-ordering was also done with the forums to accommodate this. If you notice any threads that were missed or moved incorrectly please report them.

The numbers were a bit of a surprise to me.

Just a small point: I think the split names should be consistent - either:

Home Models / Portable Models or
Home Vaporizers / Portable Vaporizers

Bumping this thread to help prod progress. It will be done when it's ready to be done, and at some point review units will be given to the members writing quality reviews.

Salutations,

Since the late change of software i've come to appreciate the new [ Like ] feature but i'd prefer to give Handshakes instead, "Likes" don't always feel acurate so i say lets have likes, hearts, etc., and handshakes: the later is what i tend to use when i meet someone and feel like showing him respect. Likes ain't exactly the same as i may have respect and yet differ of opinions.

:peace:
