One study conducted last year in the American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that obesity rates in people who don’t smoke weed were between 22 and 25.3 percent while pot smokers who smoke at least three times a week had obesity rates of between 14.3 and 17.2 percent.There are various studies have been proving that pot smokers are less likely to be obese. Yes, pot actually keeps off excess weight.

This is interesting. I have lost about 50 lbs since using mmj heavily. When I start to feel hungry I can smoke and it takes it away till later. Then later ill just have a normal meal not eat everything up. This seems to be rare tho, hence why the munchies came about. Most who I smoke with get the munchies and will tear up everything in sight. So this could be possible to lose weight from herb if it suppresses your appetite enough to reduce your calorie intake. This truly is a wonderful medicine.

I wonder if it's simply the act of smoking whether it be tobacco or thc? It would be interesting to see what the rates for cig smokers vs non cig smokers vs thc smokers vs non thc smokers.

The reason I wonder is because I have heard of plenty of people who gained a significant amount of weight when they quit tobacco.

im skinnier now than i was back before i started consuming marijuana. but the ding that changed for me was my drug of choice :p I used to binge eat, And I wouldn't even enjoy it. it was a sickness and trying to fill a void with short term material goods. now i just bake myself instead :p

I also eat a lot better than I did then. but i still treat myself of course :)

I find it hard to believe that mj use somehow makes it easier to avoid being overweight. Also don't buy that (long term anyway) the proven help for appetite with mj use makes it harder to keep the weight off. It could be that the stats for less obesity among users is due to substituting the mj habit for the eating habit, if the person is just searching for some level of satisfaction or distraction from life's worries. :shrug:

It depends on whether or not you increase in appetite, some smokers do not and lose weight.

I would definitely say I have gotten more fit since using the ganja. It has allowed me to connect with my body and feel that I need to do it good with healthy eating and exercise.

I also believe it speeds up your metabolism since you have an increased heart rate. this means more blood is flowing and being filtered which means you are expending more energy hence increasing your energy consumption and burning more calories.

I'm very skinny right now. My husband would say too skinny. I weight 118 pounds, and I am 5'5". I use cannabis daily because it is the only thing that stimulates my appetite, and controls my nausea enough for me to eat. As good as it is, it doesn't seem to be helping as well at the moment because I am still losing weight, and not sure why. Doctor is not sure either, but I suspect I might be on too high a dose of Synthroid, making me Hyperthyroid instead of Hypothyroid.

Anyway, I have never lost weight like this while using cannabis, I always gained.

The association between pot smoking and lower risk of obesity remained strong even after adjusting for other factors that could influence body fat and health, such as cigarette smoking, age and gender. But the correlation between weed and weight doesn’t mean that marijuana smoking actually causes weight loss.

Me too, I have lost about 50 pounds this last year as well. I feel amazing, I think the key is to not eat crappy stuff if you get the munchies. I for instance try and keep carrots around if I get the munchies. Makes for a healthy snack. This stuff is a miracle drug plain and simple.
 
For me, at first, I got a bit weight then after several months, I began loosing big and loving it. When I was a bit younger, it is hard for me to loose weight but when I use it, the effect is pretty good and I know it is the reason why i'm loosin big now.

I sometimes notice that if I'm high(enough) I'm even more focussed on equilibrium as usual. so eventough I often do get some munchies, I'm also more sensitive to overeating(better said, the point where eating more will make me feel uncomfortably full is a lot faster reached). if I'm snacking without being really hungry, things like chips, snacknuts etc, I always notice it lasts a long time if I eat from it while high, but if I'm sober I finish a bag of chips in 2-3 times eating from it(while high one bag of chips lasts me a week, I do eat more candy high though)
I'm also better hydrated when I get high often enough, but that's probably since I'm used to takng sips of water after vaporhits, and drink a lot of water against cottonmouth. so without vaporhits and cottonmouth, I forget to drink untill I get really thirsty.
I also go to the bathroom more often while high, partly because I'm more hydrated but I think I also act on the feeling of having to pee faster.
but I'm pretty equilibrium-minded anyway, I'm not a very big eater since I hate feeling full, I always eat enough to not feel hungry but stop eating at that point. and when in company I notice I seem to be going to the bathroom more often as others. and I almost always carry a bottle of water with me so I can take sips of water whenever I feel like

and last, but not least, if I get really high and get really bad munchies, I get munchies for specific food. sometimes fruit. I'm willing to spend a little more time preparing/baking/cooking the specific thing I want, but don't have to eat tons of it. and if I have just average munchies, usually at night, getting a bit hungry combined with being high but not very high, I just make something quick and goodtasting, wich in my case is the same as I eat for breakfast and lunch, bread. so not really unhealthy(although I do prefer sweet things on my bread, like honney, caramelsyrup, hagelslag(chocolatesprinkles), anijshagelslag(anise sprinkles) etc)
I also don't like white bread, but a brown fullgrain bread fresh from the bakery is heavenly. so actually I have a ki\nd of healthy taste, at least in that area.

I don't necessarily think it's replacing 1 habit for another. The endocannabinoid system in our body is very intricate. Most research seems to indicate that the cbd's affect all different parts of our endo system which encourages our body to more of a natural point of homeostasis. If you need to gain or lose weight cannabis seems to help with either depending on what your body needs. Personally my weight never fluctuates that much it's always been the same for the most part depending on the season and the work that I'm doing. Its summer so i am in low weight season for me, 6'2" 175lbs.

FWIW, ANY time I abstain, I drop body fat quite quickly. I think it's due to not eating/snacking much late at night or possibly hormone related.

I'm building some muscle and stuff like that since I was kinda skinny. For me smoking caused unhealthy weight loss, vaping helped me gaining weight, but when I use too much, no workout, no gain, no pain lol

I like to be high and I like to eat.. MJ helps me listening to my body so I only eat when I'm hungry
I would say it's the best appetite regulator there is (I'm medicated almost all the time)

Also since I stopped smoking, my sense of smell and taste drastically increased, so I eat a lot healthier than before. The junk food really can really smell like shit sometimes, when you're a smoker your smell and taste are really corrupted so you eat more garbage. (theory valid, at least for me)

oh yeah, i was a couch stoner and munching on potato chips & related junk foods for so long. these days i tear off some fresh salad or lettuce/vege stuff and work out when i am high. what a wonderful difference! guess it's what you do with the high feeling. maybe the study results came about as a person taking the herb is more likely to 'see the light' and thereby move in a direction which is more beneficial in the long term?

The dosage and frequency seems to do a lot.
Heavy dosage cut the munchies. Occasional use gives the munchies. A regular medium to low intake through the day seems to have a regulating effect.

Ya, so I talked to my doc about this today, he said Marijuana increases metabolism very effectively in some people. He said the key is if you are being active and eating right in conjunction with marijuana. I dont sit around eating chips on the couch and magically loose weight. I do however eat healthy when I get the munchies. I think weed helps with will power as much as metabolism for me.

The general population eats a lot of Wheat Based Products because it's the cheapest way to feed people.
However it's not very good for us. Gluten is part of it. Excessive starch is another part of it.
Our bodies break down the starch into simple sugars and our Pancreas pumps out Insulin to help break it down. As we wear out our Pancreas we develop "Diabetes".

I could rant for hours so I will stop.

We vaporize for health.
Why not eat right as well?

Whole Wheat Bread raises your GI Index more than White Bread.
It's not as healthy as you think!

I have no idea what GI index is, but if it has anything to do with weight(wich your other post is about), then it means I should probably eat more whole wheat bread, because I'm pretty sure my BMI is too low, and as far as I know I'm still 55 kg

The lower the better. High GI products really fuck up your system if you abuse even slightly. Theses products are the origin of type two diabetes, the obesity crisis and so much other bad stuff.
Theses products are totally useless in therms of nutrition. That's called junk for a reason. The consumers are real junkies, hooked on their shit, killing themselves slowly.

Everybody knows this : Eat more fruits and vegetables, limit animal products, high GI, salty and industrial foods, don't sleep on a full belly, and you'll be good

Cannabis vaporization really helped me into taking conscience of this. I've never been more aware of my body. Its important to take care.

Beware, Djonkoman, eating too much increases the risks of cancer, anyway, you can't absorb more nutriments than your need, or they get turned into unhealthy fat.
If you want to put on weight, exercise and eat healthy. I was like you, thinking my BMI was too low, its easy to gain if you're ready for regular training and pain, but don't try to gain too fast, if you want to keep it on the long term.
I putted some weight but I got some additional body fat with the muscles. Now I eat like the half of what I was eating before cause I don't exercise, my body fat has also dropped really low, I'm still a bit skinny, but now I look ripped, and I have more energy than ever. Digestion really exhaust the body, so don't try to feed yourself too much. The exercise part is tough too. I've been off for like 4 months now. But its totally worth it

I was just joking, I personally think BMI is flawed by overgeneralisation. my father also has a BMI that's too low(eventough he has always been a big eater), so it's genetic for me, and I'm not a huge eater(I eat till I'm not hungry anymore, but I don't like feeling full) and I don't drive a car, but a bicycle. so I cycle 20 km every weekday(about 12,4 niles according to google), sometimes 40 if I go out at night.
I don't care at all what my weight is actually, or other healthissues, I just care how I feel, for example there was a period where I partook more often in friends' joints(wich are almost always mixed with tobacco), but after 2 weeks of that I noticed it in my throat in the morning and developed a slight smokerscough, so I declined offered joints again and took my vaporizer out.
and lately I've started eating more fruit, not because I think it's healthy, but because I discovered that when I get an urge for sweet stuff, fruit is more satisfying as candy, and at night fruit also doesn't give me a sugarcrash 1-2 hours later.

(the issue I used to have with fruit was that one time something tasted good, then another time when I got the same kind of apple/pear/fruit it could be watery/tasteless or mealy because it wasn't the right season anymore)
