Combustion Thread

@ Bob Loblaw:How does the herb iron compare to "bee line" for combustion? taste/temperature etc?
hey SV, sorry for late reply
i don't have a lot of experience with beeline so i can't compare, however, i really like my h.i. it is all i use for combustion and it really enhances the flavor. stuff will stick like notmy said, be careful and pull away slow, burning off any sticky shreds. for torch i recommend reading the lighter threads. i use a dremel torch, really pricey in the U.S. but cheap in U.K. also this one is good for tiny jobs http://www.amazon.com/Blazer-PB207C...724&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=micro+torch+piezo

hope that helps!

always use my herb iron and incredibowls for combustion

I'll combust a few times a month, if at all, and I like using a hakko presto and an Incredibowl, similar to an herb iron. The ceramic heating element gives a nice clean taste and the flavor of your herb really comes through. Press the button for a few seconds and it gets glowing red hot, after using this for a few years I hate using any butane lighters because I really notice the taste of the butane. Here is one place that carries them. If you are not familiar with these, you unscrew the metal casing around the ceramic heating element and your ready to go.

My $30 frys hakko split down the middle of the handle/base and now gives off a smell of smoking electronics when plugged in :ugh:

Keeps me combusting less, don't mind too much.

I hate using butane, I've never tried a heat iron but the seldom times I do combust nowadays I just use hempwick, the difference seems immense.
To the OP regarding vaporizing being incorporated with combusting, I used to be really into combusting kief pure, and still have a pipe thats only ever had straight kief smoked in it. Before lighting it I would hold the hempwick flame 1 cm away from the kief and watched it shrink and melt. This was before vapor for me so I loved it, never seemed to work with bud though. Another thing I would do is spark a fat bong bowl and quickly put a lil scoop of kief on the cherry. Still not vapor but much gentler than torching it.

Thanks Bob, I've googled the dremel torch. "Versa Tip" correct? It looks good. Is it possible to light a bowl with one of the attachments eg the "hot knife"? If so then it could be used instead of a herb iron??

yea, that's the one. mine is the stand up version, but they have a straight one as well.
it sounds like that would work as you suggest. never tried it myself, but as it is a solder tip, it should do the job.

Snappers with out a doubt. I like a slide with a small, narrow push and a large punch.

25 watt hakko is with out a doubt the best way to combust imo.

Diffusion is just ridiculous now imo.People don't realize that they only use about 5% of a pieces possible diffusion when milking a piece.

The only time blunts are nasty is if you use shity sub par weed. I like blunts with ultra headies in them

The push is the indentation in the slide that holds the weed. The punch is the hole in the bottom of the push.

peripherally related:
i was so amazed when i read yesterday that resin from combusting has less than ten percent of the THC you'd find in the plant material, that explains why it was never stoney...it's just made up of tar. I guess I can stop wondering how to filter pipe resin to get hash oil, ain't gonna happen.

its actually quite easy, i do it all the time for my buddies (they beg me too and i don't really mind). you just clean it like normal but without salt. then you just have to poor the iso through a filter or two ( i usually use 3.... but thats just me). also i find it easiest to poor it into another container b4 i filter it (i little bit less messy). its not particularly potent but it sure fun way to make your bud last a bit longer give a bowl a bit more of a kick :brow:

just as a heads up... its kinda dirty oil so it doesn't make friends with a nail or swing :disgust:

I still combust frequently and vape. Sometimes nothing can medicate me like a hash topped bowl! I avoid rolled goods. Blunts are for dirt weed, the flavors of them wraps are to mask the nasty weed. When im smoking my super sweet durban poison or jack frost i dont want its taste masked by a flavored wrap.

I got a sample of hemp wick and tried it out. Now im not a anti chemical type, im pretty satisfied lighting with my bic, so i found the hemp wick a hassle. Why light the wick with a lighter, then light the bowl with the wick instead of just lighting your bowl? im amazed how it can be described as an immense difference using hempwick......Ill leave that for the purists.

Also, i would say pipe resin should go in the trash. Ive been there smoking resin in my early stoner days and never again. Its minimal effects, horrible taste and raw throat feeling will not be missed.

I definitely agree with your views on blunts and pipe resin, but I use hempwick almost every time I combust because personally I hate having to torch my weed with a lighter. I guess you could call me a purist for the most part, but hey, everyones different.
After prolonged use of it you really notice the taste of butane that much more IME and I would rather have a smaller more controlled flame. It even seems slightly less harsh and my friends have agreed. It was a bit of a hassle for me at first, especially holding a glass piece, but I got used to it and now it seems almost just as easy as just striking the lighter, although it would be a pain outside with the wind, but thats no problem for me as I barely even need to hit the LB outside.

^^^^^i enjoyed trying something new but the wick wasnt for me..... I was even getting little drips of wax if it burned too long... I wasnt calling anyone a purist in a insulting way, it just seems they are the ones dedicated to the hempwick.

agree w/ blunt wraps, however a joint rolled in RAW's regular or organic hemp line is tasty, 'specially when lit w/ herb iron

Yea its definitely not for everyone, like vaping. I never get drops of wax, might I ask what brand it was?

Never used Humboldt before, I have I-Tal Hempwick and have no complaints with it.

Lately with kief on the occasional combustion night I have been holding the wick flame over the bowl just enough to vape the kief before i combust it. I get vapor. Not a ton but I get it. But tonight i put some wand hash in there and holy heck did it ever vaporize! It bubbled up and gave thick hits of vapor! :science: I wonder if i can get that good of a hit with kief without burning it.

But the main thing with this is, in all honesty, its just fun, regulating the hit as to not burn it, until the end if you so choose to!

Only thing I still smoke is Salvia, and that is very occasionally. Water filtered and hit with a torch...have to hold it in for 20 seconds. So brutal, especially after getting used to the great taste of vaping.
