Hello all and welcome to the Wychwood Vaporizers thread on FC.

Wychwood Vaporizers are the first Log Vaporizers, or Log Vapes, to be produced in the UK.

INTRODUCTION
About a year ago I stumbled upon this great forum Fuckcombustion.com while looking for alternatives to smoking. I was immediately grasped by the quality of information and people posting. I was hooked instantly, not on vaporizers but on information. There was a wealth of knowledge being shared for the benefit of anyone who could be bothered to read it. And read I did.

After three months of exhaustive reading I had my choices made. I waited for pay day and went to my local head shop to pick up my home vape and portable choice. It was a big leap to make, spending over a week’s pay on something I wasn’t sure would work for me. That was the last time I smoked/combusted and I haven’t looked back.

I was so impressed with vaporizing that I had the desire to investigate more, to try the different vaporizers and methods they use. One style I had a real hankering for was a Log Vape. Reading about them on FC and the devotion their users had to the product made we want one – badly! I was gutted to find out at the time that they were not shipped outside of the USA. Several vaporizers later I managed to pick one up in the Classifieds section and when it arrived it was instant love. I loved the form and function of the piece and also the natural element that made it blend in with the furniture at home without looking out of place.

It was then that I really wanted to bring Log Vaporizers to the UK for others to benefit from. I then contacted a few makers about supplying me with Log Vapes for the European market. They were unable to supply me as the demands from the home market were enough work as it was. That is when I decided to make them myself for the European market and Wychwood Vaporizers was born.

The name Wychwood stems from the Wych Elm tree, a native British species. For me the name conjures up something a bit mystical and magical. All Wychwood Vaporizers are plugged in the bottom with Wychwood from the Wych Elm tree, so I hope they all carry a little bit of that mystic and magic with them.

Since I began my R&D two more Log Vaporizer makers have entered the market with great products that have diversified the field. I hope to emulate their innovation and also the great service they have provided. I would like to say thanks to all those that went before me for the inspiration and lessons in how to treat your customers well.

THE VAPORIZER
The Wychwood Log Vaporizer comprises of a wooden body, steel internals to create a heat sink and a ceramic heater. It uses 12v 1a of power and is designed to be left on 24 hours a day. It gets up to effective vaporizing temperature in approximately 10 minutes.

It stands at 10cm tall with an approximate diameter of 3.5 cm. All of my stems are designed to fit outside the heat port, as opposed to the traditional stems that sit inside.

I know how important materials are to everyone when it comes to vaporizers so I have chosen ones I hope everyone will be satisfied with. The steel I am using is 316 grade for the internal tube and 304 for the outer. They are welded at the bottom by a 304 steel washer using 316 welding rods.

All elements are ROHS compliant including the solder, the glue on the base and the bus wire. The wood is finished with natural bees and carnauba wax.

Initially I will be offering one design in 4 woods – Ash, Oak, Sapele and Sycamore which will be made to order. I have chosen these as I have a good supplier that ethically sources these and can supply them on demand.

I will be making one-off’s in special woods when I come across them that will be posted on the ‘Specials’ page of the website, as well as one-off stems and other items. These will be posted on the site sporadically.

If you read all of that – thank you - and don’t feel shy to come and say hi :D

First off, good luck!
Second, it looks awesome!

I have no idea what is special about a log vape but perhaps you can shed some light on the subject?

24/7 is awesome! :0

@m0sh. Thanks for the kind words. For me the special thing about log vapes is the cross over between wood, metal and steam. I love wood to look at and touch. It's natural and warming, and like people, each piece is individual. There's something a little 'ye olde' about them that reminds me of steam trains and 'simpler times'. Yet under that mask lies a great functioning device that delivers 24/7 and satisfies.

@placetime. Thanks a bunch :) I'm really excited to finally have got the ball rolling. The heater core uses the traditional ceramic heater that the first gen of logs have been using for over 10 years. They are tried and tested for this function - so for me the old adage applies here "If it aint broke don't fix it".
The SS tubing I'm using has 1mm walls, so had a decent amount of mass to act as a heat sink and is welded closed at the bottom to isolate the air-path from the wood internally.

@mom. Thank you. That's exactly how I felt about it and what's led me to this endeavour :)

JRRTokin, thank you for thinking of european vaporists! heheheh.

Congrats on the new endeavour, definitly looks promising. :D

Nice! I have one question though. I understand you're bringing the log vape to the EU market, but will you be selling to US customers also? The reason i ask is because i have friends who want a HI but dont want to wait so long for it. This unit seems like the next best thing and im sure my friends would love to give it a try.

@VaporBoxed. Good question. For now I'm going to keep it in the EU. Mainly because I want to be able to offer the best possible service I can and that becomes harder the further away from home the vape has to travel.
On another note: The HI is an excellent vaporizer and worth the wait imo. Alan is a real craftsman and his products are top - tell your friends to hang in there

have you considered using glass like the seed pod vape that is not out yet? I am really interested to see how that plays out.

@m0sh. Of course I'll send to Holyland. This was one of my first beta units and test vids. On the table are a few trials. They've come on a bit since then.

I really need to get some sleep now. Been up for about 24hrs now and have people over for dinner in 3 hours - and still need to prep the leg of lamb for roasting - gulp. I will defo make a good vid tomorrow - promise.

@stickstones. I haven't tried it but I really like the innovation. It's an interesting looking vape for sure.

FINALLY someone takes care of the overseas market for log vapes!!! Congratulations J.R.R., aka Cookie. :D

I think it's fantastic when one of own (which is how I think of JRR) not only brings a gorgeous new vapourizer to market, but also positions himself to fill an obvious gap. I hope the demand doesn't wear JRR out too quickly.

The thread is finally up
Congrats JRR :)
I'm the happy owner of the 7th Wychwood Log produced (it's numbered :D), a lovely sapele beauty.
I've shot about 4 or 5 vids of it in action, to come in the next few days
I've been letting it heat up for 10-15 mins, and its been running great.
Its got great airflow, and pairs very well with glass.

It's taken a serious chunk out of the LSV's role as my daily driver.
I've been using it in combination with my DG Mini Can - Vapeing doesn't get better than that.

I agree, Pak. It warms my heart to see JRR take on this endeavor. It's about time that you guys on the other side of the pond have access to logs.

Best of luck Cookie!

I've been beta testing one of these guys for a few weeks now and I'm pretty happy with it. It's a very early one- perhaps one of the 'blondes' in the video- a pre-numbering beta, I think. The only log I can compare it to is my PD, and I prefer this much more.

Like Frederick says, it's got great airflow and you don't feel like you're sucking on a milkshake at all. I'm truly amazed at how unnecessary the heavy heat sink that the PD has seems to be. Vaping on my own it takes some work to bring the temp down on the WW, and when I do (consecutive big bong hits) the recovery is much quicker than my PD - just a minute or two and it's right back up to temp. I've only been running it at 12v, but I think I'm going to try a variable voltage power supply to see what's up goes- not something I wanted to do with my PD and the charring wood, that's for sure.

I've only been using silicone stems, which again I find much preferable to the trad. pd stems, and I even prefer the silicone to my Cleardome tube.

Flavour is great and the hits are thick. Happy days!

Good job JRR!

@Pakololo. Thank you so much for the kind words. I really do consider myself 'one of us' :) and this project is totally the product of me being here as a part of FC - I couldn't have done it without the contributions of the amazing people here.

@Frederick McGuire or should I say 'Lucky Number Seven'. Thank you so much for the feedback. I'm glad your being treated well by your WW and wish the two of you many happy vappy days together. Looking forward to seeing your vids with some of that gorgeous glass ware :brow:

@Stu. Thanks for the props and for those Skype sessions where I picked your brains for your wealth of vaporizing knowledge.

@OTA. Thanks for the support. I was unsure if that intro was a bit 'touchy-feely' but it was genuine and from the heart and that's how I hope my vapes will be too :D Looking forward to getting a WW in your hands

@SM. Thanks a lot. I've been enjoying your blog and hope to see a review of the WW on there some time ;)

@Wat. Thank you sooo much for being there to beta test, offer feedback and talk vapes for hours on end :) I'm glad the WW has served you well and it's great to know that there are other vapor fanatics over here with me in the UK :science:

@stickstones. I would say it's a bit of a hybrid of a HI and Classic log core. The mass of metal in my core acts as a heat sink, whereas the HI has a minimal mass creating a heat island.

@placetime. I like WW, works for me  - I wonder when someones going to come out with the BMW 'Bloody Magnificent Waporizer!'
