Dental Anesthetic and Marijuana?

Anyone got any information on this?

Some are saying it's bad to administer marijuana before getting a shot of anesthetic before dental surgery and same applies for after too... Does anyone have any experience with this?

I mean has anyone vaped before getting a shot in their gums? And has anyone vaped while the anesthetic is still active after dental treatment?

Before, after, never had a problem with it myself.

I have read in another thread on here that some people complain about the suction you get with vaping, but I think that was more in combination with the wound you get from a pulled tooth.

I did a quick search but I can't find the thread I'm thinking of right now, does anyone know the tittle of the thread I'm thinking of perhaps?

I usually go to the dentist a little compromised :brow: You'll be okay, the biggest problem I can foresee is maybe some trouble vaping afterwards because you can't feel your mouth. The suction thing that ^ OTA refers to seems plausible, too. I haven't got a tooth pulled in a long while, but that's what I remember. "Ok, now, you're gonna feel a little pinch in your gums..."

Probably the same someones that think that 'Reefer Madness' was a fact based documentary.

I did it many times and had absolutely no problems. Unlike other substances, the active compounds of MJ are very friendly and inocuous to other substances, anesthetics included.

You don't smoke anything after having a tooth pulled. The heat can create dry socket. You don't want that.

Wisdom teeth removed. Smoked (didn't vape at that time in my life). 4 out of 4 dry sockets. 120 painkillers later and some CLOVE FLAVORED pad :puke: I was back to normal.

As for the Novocaine I do notice that seems to be more exaggerated effects while vaping, but nothing dangerous. I generally think going to the dentist is one of the few things in the world better done sober.

^^^This!! If you smoke, or even drink from a straw, the blood clot can be pulled out, leading to dry socket. It is some of the worst pain I have ever felt in my life!! Be careful!

Just want to confirm that 30-45mins after oral administration, using a 12L volcano bag at 185, the anesthetic wore off. The timeframe is roughly an hour or two after the anesthetic was administered to my top gum leaving my face hanging and my nose running with nausea. Both numb and nausea disappeared.

nucleo,
I was heavily advised to not intake any type of drugs specifically marijuana and alcohol, before and after the surgery. Think before applies to the anesthesia and after applies to the healing process.
Non-local administration of anesthesia can be a hairy situation so, personally I'd just listen to the doctors :p If it's just local, I don't know... Probably better off safe then sorry.

Bummer dude, I hear dry sockets can be like child birth.

I vaped like crazy when I had my wisdom teeth out, I borrowed my good buddy's volcano than I later ended up purchasing. The surgery was really my reentry into vaporizing again, why I ended up on FC, why I've spend way too much money on different vapes, etc.. Anyway, I had no dry sockets, and I never popped a single pain killer during my recovery.

More pertaining to the OP's question, I have indeed been shot up with Novocaine while vaped and no one said anything at any point, except "boy, your mouth is dry." I had a 8 hour root canal and going in a little medicated definitely eased the stress.

I'm getting my wisdom teeth out in a few days myself, and am curious about the dry socket/suction/post-removal non vaping deal. None of them are impacted, and I was told it would take less than 15 minutes total to remove them all; just a local anesthetic (nova-cane) and possibly nitrous.

How long did those who've waited, wait before vaping/smoking/drinking with a straw? I don't want any additional pain lol, I'd rather wait until it's safe.

Edit* CDS, were you careful to not suck/pull to hard when you vaped after having them out?

No problems here before. It depends on what you are doing during the procedure that can affect after. For instance I was not able to smoke for 48 hours after my wisdom tooth was taken out. They said the suction motion could cause my clot to fall out and cause a painful dry socket. I ended up using my ExtremeQ. I turned the fan on and held the hose up to my mouth and just breathed in and out. I just had to make sure not to cough from the vapor because that could have dislodged the clot as well. It helped with the pain and I did not get a dry socket. So it worked for me. I would be very cautious abut smoking after a tooth extraction. Regular dental work should not be an issue before or after.

If you aren't sure if it is safe to vape or not due to suction, but you are GOING to do it anyway, vape through your nose. Seriously. Besides irritating a different passage way than you are used to, there is very little suction and more or less none in your mouth while doing this.

If you know you are going to vaporize/smoke after you have a tooth extracted (Particularly Wisdom) you should invest in a vaporizer with a fan. It is worth the peace of mind knowing you will be doing the best thing you can do to reduce the chance of getting a dry socket. Breathing through the nose can still dislodge the clot. Sneezing, Coughing, Drinking though a straw, and any sucking or change of pressure can dislodge the clot. It is not worth the risk to use a Solor or any type of vaporizer you need to suck on in order to extract vapor.

You really don't want to get a dry socket. From what I read women say it was worse pain then child birth. OUCH! If you know you have to smoke after an extraction then it would be worth the investment in a fan driven whip or bag style vaporizer.

Oh Vicki you have a point. I have noticed a real lack of pain management techniques when it comes to dental work. I had my wisdom tooth taken out in Febuary. I am 27 years old so the tooth had fuzed to the jawbone some. They had to cut out a portion of my jaw to extract the tooth. I was given some pain killers and sent home. I could not open my mouth for a week or more. It was insane how painful it was. I went through my pills and they did not want to give me many more. They ended up giving me about 2 weeks worth of pain mediation to deal with a month and a half of pain or more.

I just went back to have a cavity filled. The whole reason I had the wisdom tooth taken out is because the tooth next to it had a cavity they needed to fill. They filled the cavity on the 24th of last month. I have been in constant pain since then. I have Oxycodone from my broken hand that I have been taking to relive the pain. Crazy thing is even with an Oxycodone I still feel the tooth pain. I have to take a pill every 4-5 hours or the pain creeps back. The dentists seemed reluctant to want to give me any pain pills.

I guess it is hard to defend tooth pain as a reasonable excuse for pain pills. I have found it very frustrating to be on pain pills for my tooth. I am hoping the constant pain goes away soon. It gets annoying to be in constant pain. The pain I am having is because they had to drill pretty deep into the pulp to fill the cavity. So the pulp is inflamed from the procedure still and puts pressure on the nerve in the tooth. It feels like a balloon is being inflated inside a Tupperware container.

In terms of pain levels the tooth hurts more then my broken hand or my roator cuff injury. It is really crazy how much your tooth can actually hurt.

That was exactly what I went through with my wisdom teeth extractions. They had to cut them out because they broke when they tried to pull them. They hit my nerves a lot, and it made the pain after the process that much more.

Yeah, dentists like to put you in pain, but then they don't like to give you anything for it, or they give so little that you run out way before the pain goes away.

Don't get me wrong, I despise pain pills, but I also despise sitting in horrible pain. Because of that, I make sure I always have some pain pills in the house, even if I go months without taking any of them.

Sad to hear all those horror storys. Got my wisdom tooth removed last week. Vaped the day before the extraction and 1 hour after it. The only worry i had was the anesthetization wouldn't work, but no problems with that. Was like getting the hairs cut. It was pulled out in one piece, about 15 seconds of extraction... but that was the first, there are three left

Hit my mflb and volcano one hour after the extraction and didn't even thought about suction or a dry socket because i didn't know:clap:...
If you vape carefully and not like hell there should be no problem i think and i really felt it also helped a little bit decongestant.

just my :2c: and my first post on FC hell yeah

Welcome Vapenstein1 to FC. Sounds like you had a simple extraction. I hope the rest go as smoothly as your first. Yea mine was a nightmare. It took three hours to extract the one tooth. The roots went very deep into my jaw. Then strangely one of the roots turned at a 90 degree angle and went in to my jawbone. So they cut out a cotton ball size portion of my jaw bone.

They did not put me under. Instead gave me some weird syrup and nitrous oxide. It was a crazy combination. It caused me to be completely conscious but I forgot everything. I thought I was in the chair for about 45 minutes. I remember the first 20 and last 20 minutes of the procedure. The time in between is just gone.

BTW interesting fact. You can harvest your own stem cells from your wisdom teeth. I still have three of mine and might be able to keep them. It is nice to know that they are like little stem cell containers. Makes me feel better about keeping them. I want to make sure if I have any of the others taken out they are preserved so the stem cells can be extracted at a later date.

Thanks. That sounds like one of the most complicated tooth-extractions ever.
Really hope they will completely daze me if one of my upcoming extractions looks like this.

But nice to hear you can keep them and maybe harvest some stem cells later. At least one good fact about those senseless wisdom teeth. Shame on me i threw it away after a few days...

Thanks for the additional info everyone! I'll be getting mine out (all 4 third molars) on monday. I won't be able to make it to the dispensary between now and then, leaving me with two options for medicating. I have about a gram of the last oil I made, and a half bottle of Sour Diesel glycerin tincture. My only means of consuming the hash is through my bong with nail/dome setup. Should I just use it without water to reduce suction?

I have a feeling that the tincture won't help much...but I am weary of using the bong (diffused downstem, 4 arm tree perc)

any advice? I'll ask my dentist on the day of, how long he thinks I should abstain from drinking through a straw/smoking.
