Roast Box - Zippo heater case for Dynavap

Hey FC!

I'm the maker of this product, and am hoping to get some feedback from this great community I've learned so much from.

It's made of pine and aluminum metal, and it fits a Zippo torch insert. I could also make this for other similar-styled lighters, or other wood types. The wood is not treated with anything, so might experiment with this in later runs.

I use it daily, and even though I have a plugin IH, I prefer this sometimes for it's consistency and convenience. The flame is in the perfect spot every time.

It lets me use it in public more often. I don't get those concerning looks like I used to with just a torch.

If you ever tried to heat a Dynavap in the bright sun with a torch you know how hard it is to see the flame; with the Roast Box it's not an issue. You just have to listen for the sound of the torch.

Windy conditions can be a problem for a torch, but the RB protects the flame from high winds.

Here's a video of it in use:

Here's a link to my Etsy for 20% off until 4/20/20 (code ROASTBOX420):

So please, tell me what you think? Would this be useful for others? I would love some hands-on feedback.

Thanks

An interesting idea that could certainly prove useful for some. It definitely adds a level of stealth to the heating process when using a torch in public, which is a plus for sure.

My initial feedback from seeing it in use would be that the user should be able to adjust the depth of the lighter in the housing because from what I could see & from the look of your blackened Cap, you are heating too close to the flame for my liking. The flame barely touches the Cap with my torch technique, unless, as you pointed out, I am in particularly bright light (or far too intoxicated) & can't see what I'm doing properly. But none of my Caps look as battle damaged as yours & I've been using them for years.

I would also like to see a slightly more refined solution to holding the lighter in place, with perhaps a bottom cap to seal it in that (obviously) continues to allow it all to function.

Overall, I really like your thinking and with the potential for further refinement & future iterations, you just might be on to something

. . . And that's without even thinking about exotic hardwood varieties

Welcome, dude, and what a great first post!

It's possible my cap has been abused with a regular torch too, so I'm not sure the source, but I can lower the flame to a much lower setting:

Here's a picture of the flame at the lowest setting, but at that level it's not real practical (~1min).

I usually align the lowest flame to the bottom of the the opening; little adjustments from there will speed up or slower the heat time.

Yes, I agree about this, though the current solution hasn't caused me any issues so far, and is simple to use. I have another idea that I'm working on.

I sent one out this morning, so I'm looking forward to hear more!

I like it simply because it takes the heating out of the cold and makes the area around the cap a mini-environment.

FYI @SolderBoxArt , imgur.com does not work here, so no one can see your pic here. I suggest using an alternative like imgbb or tinypic.

Here's the image, for anyone who wants to see it:

@VegNVape: The cap is blackened from soot from the Zippo flame, it’s not because of the distance to the flame. Zippos are like Bic lighters, they don’t burn as hot as a blue torch flame. They also have a cotton wick which produces soot. The soot should wipe off easily after use leaving the cap looking normal.

I only use torch lighters with my VapCaps but my technique is to hold the cap directly in the flame. I’ve never had a cap get blackened at all using it this way.

Hey there @Vapor_Eyes :) I know what a standard Zippo is but that is not what he's using. It's a Zippo torch insert - take a look here if you haven't seen them before . . . https://www.zippo.co.uk/inserts/4041-butane-insert-single-flame--4045233029578.html

And from his video I can see the Cap is much closer to the flame than I generally prefer, but that's just me cuz we all have our own techniques on that one.

Cheers anyway, dude

Thanks for the info, I wasn’t aware of this device. That is truly strange that his cap is that black. I keep my cap in the middle of the flame but my friend actually places it as low and far into the flame as possible. I’ve never had any blackening of the cap at all.

I only have a Shadow M right now and I don’t use it that much. If anything it’s gotten a little lighter. Now that I think about it my original cap had turned almost completely black before I sold my collection. I forgot about that because it happened gradually but I liked the way it looked.

The Roast Box looks like a nice little device that makes it easier to use your Vapcaps in public.

Vapor_Eyes,
You press up on the bottom of the torch insert while gripping the sides, or top, of the box as leverage.

In the video I am using my thumb and index finger to hold onto the sides, while my remaining fingers--leading with the middle finger--press on the bottom of the Zippo insert.

Alternatively, you can also put your thumb on the wider side of the top of the box and pull up on the bottom of the lighter insert with any other finger.

Got a hold of some really nice Sapele wood and have made another batch. The dark wood and brass colored shroud made me think of some kind of caramel chocolate bar . They're up on Etsy now! I've also trimmed up the metal shroud a bit, and improved my sanding technique. I've had to add some steps to the process, but I'm finding ways to make it more efficient, so the price has stayed the same. I also put the previous batch on sale, because, let's face it, they pale in comparison in looks, but they still function as expected. As a thank you to those who purchased one from the original batch, I'll give them the same sale price for this new batch. Just make the purchase and i can reduce the price after the fact.

Hope you all like them!

I'll also paste the last post i made (today) below to keep the conversation going. Thanks, FC!

These are really cool! I like the concept a lot! I wonder how difficult it would be to make it a bit wider to actually store the Dynavap inside the same case. That would totally take it to another level! I really like the originality of this. Well done!

Thank you! And thanks for reminding me of that idea. I was focused on getting it as small as I could, and kind of put that thought away. You've definitely re-sparked my light bulb.

Here's something I've been working on based off of @Kheleck41girl 's suggestion:
store the Dynavap inside the same case.

This one's just a prototype that i will test in the real world before offering these up.

Is this something you would be interested in?

There's no place for added storage unless i made it wider.

I was also thinking of adding a magnet on the side.

What else do you think i could do to improve this?

Very nice!! I really like that a lot! As much as an herb stash would be nice, I think it might make it too wide, and slim/pocketable is what it's all about, so I would say how you have it is good. That's just my opinion though. Can't wait to see the production model!
