Post-Processing Rosin - Your wish, after the squish

Someone sent me a bunch of dry, old crap. I ice washed it, then pressed it.

Its vile. The resulting rosin is a very, very solid lump, like hard toffee. So I thought I'd try and separate it, to get rid of any flavour and just be left with the THCA.

I cannot get this to separate, even when double bagged with 15u bags! Interesting. I assumed because it was a solid lump, it would be more likely to separate, but I guess I was wrong :)

Nice, I had a White Rhino mumma plant for over 10 years, today it is Incredible bulk, 19 month old buds turned into rosin, low temp and pressure squish for this,

19 months then, eh! Sorry, I quoted your post from a different thread :D

Did you squish any of it 19 months ago? If so, do you remember if the rosin here is much different to the rosin you got back then?

So, I have some rosin that tastes like shit. Any one got any top tips that dont involve solvents for getting rid of all the flavour?

I tried giving it the thca treatment (mechanical separation via two 15u bags), but no dice.

Canna capsules would be the easiest :D
If you still want to dab it that could be tricky to get rid of the flavor. With solvents you could try various chromatography medias but I definitely understand not wanting to mess with all that, that's why we press rosin in the first place. :myday:

Yeah, caps was the best I could come up with. Damn :)

Oh well, thanks man!

OK, I tried decarbing the horrible rosin a bit, to see if that would help 'burn off' some terpenes/smell. I did this just by putting the little jar the rosin is in on to the TBucket itself until it bubbled up and then take it off and let it cool. I did this twice.

Then I remembered I had the sauce left from my thca separation (did a dab of pure sauce, holy crap that tasted amazing), and added that to the horrible stuff.

Its worked slightly. I think if I do one more thca separation and put that sauce in the horrible stuff, it'll be usable. I dont really want to use this stuff in caps as any of that flavour coming up in burps would be vile :)

So if I can make it taste ok and then set it one side for emergencies, that will be an acceptable outcome :)

Are you totally committed to vaping this?

Seems like you are desperate to use this poor quality material, and like a gambler throwing good money at a bad hand, you are tossing your good sauce at it [and diluting the quality of the good sauce in the process].

Would you consider just using your material in some form of edible fashion, or even donating it to someone?

I'd rather vape it than eat it tbh. And if I'm going to give it away, I'd rather it was palatable in some way.

Time might help dilute the bad smells/taste, it does in bud curing, can't hurt to try as it sounds like you aren't short of supply.

Yeah, thats the other thing I was thinking. I had it being kept in the freezer but took it out for just that reason :D

Its not so much that im not short on supply, its more that everything is quite small amounts so there is no waste. This vile rosin is only like 2 grams or so, if that. I added less than half a gram of sauce to it.

Its not throwing money away.

EDIT: And why would I want to give away to someone something that is vile? Whats the fucking point in that? If I'm going to give something away, I want it to be good and have them enjoy the fucking experience, not nearly vomit every time they use it.

I have a jar with 'Dropdown' written on it that I don't bother reclaiming until a smoking buddy said he would give it a try and loves it smeared on a rolly paper as he rolls a spliff, black death looking shit if you ask me, but he loves it for nightcap joints.

Well, thats on him, his request :D

But for the sake of a few drops of sauce, I'd rather give this away in a nicer state :) Altho, tbh, I am way more inclined to give the quality stuff away and keep the crap for myself! I think I might have that all backwards ;)

Small lump of rosin, really solid stuff, like solid toffee, in a small jar. Hot water in the jar. Jar in the ultrasonic cleaner. Gonna change the water once a day, give it sonic clean once a day, see if it removes/leeches out the flavour.

Can I blame lock down and boredom?

The small lump lost its horrible flavour, so I've bitten the bullet and put the whole 3g in a jar, cold water, ultrasonic clean.

Considering the water is changing colour fairly quickly, I'd say something water soluble is coming out. I wonder if I got water in the 'dry sift' I pressed and that squeezed some crap out? The rosin changed colour, has a green sheen to it, lots of bubbles :)

Any luck and it'll just taste of nothing after this and I can just add a bit of sauce in to give it some quality flavour.

Hurrah! :)

I believe some of the terps in cannabis are more water soluble than others. Not all but some. Also, there are probably other things in rosin. Perhaps chlorophyll or other stuff from the pot.

"Each terpene will have its own level of solubility in water at a given pressure and temperature, with the more oxygenated ones having better solubility than the non-oxygenated ones or less oxygenated ones. For instance, if you added a solution of equal parts Myrcene, Linalool, and 6,7-Dihydro-7-hydroxylinalool to water, mixed, and allowed time for proper decantation, you would find Myrcene at the lowest concentration in the water, Linalool in the middle, and 6,7-Dihydro-7-hydroxylinalool at the greatest concentration."

Nice quote, thank you.

Chlorophyll is my suspected culprit. I think there might have been moisture in the dry sift, and its leeched out some of the old, dry, vile leaf crap. Chlorophyll is one of the things that leeches out during water curing flower, along with most of the terpenes. Hence my wacky logic :)

Fingers crossed this is going to work. I've just tried a tiny bit (after about 30 mins in ultrasonic cleaner) and its vile flavour has MASSIVELY diminished and its leaving less crap in the dish.

Just like water curing flower, I'll keep this up until the water stays clear. Shouldnt be long at this rate.

EDIT: Just did a big dab of it, which normally is fucking disgusting. Barely any flavour at all this time.

SUCCESS!

I think some strains just stink. LOL I grew some Hazeman Seeds Triple XXX and on both crops, the stuff was so horrible tasting, it just sits in the jars. LOL I make rosin from it and then use the rosin for edibles. Other than that, it's just so horrible tasting. Both the flowers and the rosin were both equally bad tasting. And, this was on 2 successive crops so I think it was more 'strain' related than environment.

I've had a few rosins that are very sickly, and yes, taste vile to me, but more in an overpowering terpene kinda way.

This stuff tho, its made from donated old crap horrible shit flower that someone sent me, fuck knows how long its been sat around and in what conditions. The rosin had marvelous hints of old burning plastic and fish...

:puke:

Not any more tho! Water cured in a jar, helped along by placing the jar in the ultrasonic cleaner :) This has surpassed my expectations, which wasnt hard tbh.

I suspect it wouldnt work with anything but the most solid of rosins. This stuff is more like a solid hashy lump.
