Discontinued Hopper io

I thought you were referring to the gap between the dial and the body.
I’m curios if the added plastic fills this gap. It seems with the current Grasshopper, this gap can vary in size, and it allows gunk to find its way inside the backend which can compromise the conductivity of the internal contact surfaces. Extra resistance is what is causing the backend heat some users experience. It can get really hot, potentially to a point that it can’t be handled. This heat is a loss of energy and having to avoid being burnt by touching the backend is a nuisance.

The backend redesign on the io appears to address this issue directly: 50% reduction in contact surfaces, gold plating on existing surfaces, black plastic molded into machined tick marks for better visibility, smoother dial action, increased battery contact pressure, and self-cleaning battery contact.

Those last few points are interesting to me. If there is plastic between dial and SS collar, this could allow a standardised assembly where everything fits flush for better dust protection and rotation is smoothed by the glide of the material interface. Current users would know that pushing the dial into the collar, closing this gap, allows much smoother dial selection and I suspect it also causes a better battery contact. Hoppers that have the most friction resistance in the final turns of backend replacement, seem to offer the better power efficiency and vapour delivery. If the battery pressure is less, it seems the hits are cool and the ABV is tan. There’s more than a few variables, but given a functional unit and battery, dirty contacts and assembled battery chamber height will impact performance noticeably.

My 2 RMA units are 3 days off one year of awesome performance, the back ends don’t get hot, the extraction is consistent and the power efficiency is unchanged and impressive. My old batteries are holding up well.

if the io further closes the gap between the extraction potential of the Sublimator and the already amazing Grasshopper OG, I will be so happy.

from 2016-2019 my friend had a bronze unit that could cloud up to some kind of limit. At temp 5 it was so close to combustion, and the clouds were crazy. The extra performance was unmistakably extra strong, and even at lower temps the clouds were thick enough to chew like a marshmallow.
I expect this kind of production from the Hopper io, it’s going to be incredible to behold.

The gap between the dial ticks and the clip area is not filled with the plastic. There is a gap required there to allow the rotation to work, and that comes with some tolerance. It is tighter than before but not filled with plastic. Build up in this area will not affect conductivity as there is no power pathway there. The power flows in the core of the backend, and that area has been completely redesigned for io. We have a new specialized gold plated spring that creates the pressure to push on the battery contact and moves the power internally. These springs have $$$ of gold on them and are a fantastic improvement.

So far that sounds like the biggest improvement to me. Make it as efficient as possible with these cells. Better conductivity, less back end heat, less loss.

I'm glad I jumped on this right out of the gate. Let the nay sayer's struggle to achieve what a partially working GH does, much less a properly working one..... and now they've improved it?

Our new facility is now mostly set up and we are spending most of our time on operations. I will post an update on the warranty system in the Grasshopper thread. SS Hoppers BTW are available in very small quantity through the website if anyone really needs one before the io.

Regarding progress on the io. We have completed a good portion of the device for the April release and currently are way ahead of schedule. We have all machining and molding completed. A break down of the device:

Front-ends : Completed
Heaters: Completed
Front PCB: Completed
Bodies: Completed
Back PCB: In progress
Backend Parts: Completed
Chargers: In progress
Packaging: Completed
Manual: Completed
Website/info: In Progress
Final assembly of the whole device: 65% completed

Really nice to hear promising info. Always waiting for your updates and so glad they have been fairly frequent. It's really much appreciated by all.

Anything else you can share on the "info" front? Features, pictures (of heater/components) and how/why these developments came up are all things that would be awesome to have shared! :D

The picture of the white LED was nice. You mentioned you were carrying that io around... Are you using that unit as a daily driver with the stock mouthpiece? I don't particularly mind the natural added restriction of the "pen" mouthpiece, but the PFE has been my go-to on the OG 'hopper.

Are there other completed units as well?

I'd also like to know how progress on the Hopper Battery Charger is? ... and I'd still really love a video!!!

Thanks and cheers

Well...yes and I admit that I had not thought of that.

I use one of Mikes (Delta 3D) Lotus stands for the GH so that's kind of how I park it.

But, you make a good and valid point.

hahaha...I still don't like the clip though! haha

Cheers

I put a small piece of heat shrink tubing on the clip so the sharp edges don’t scratch my dark grey Hopper.

I did the same with my HT unit, the heat shrink lasted about a year and then it fell off. I haven't worried about replacing it since.
Rotating the body and holding the backend stationary basically prevents scratching. The laser engraved clip looks better as is too. Though the heat shrink was a neat solution, I was so careful with that hopper I don't think it was ever necessary. My plain Ti I don't care about scratching, it's got some nicks from being dropped, yet not even that has a ring under the clip. Just by unscrewing it the same way I have since the first day I was hopping and figured that out has prevented the unsightly ring. The matte finish anodised units are the easiest to mark though, and look the worst when scuffed up. Best bet for the PFE is to buy plain Ti and anodised/colour it yourself. The HT PFEs look amazing but less so when they have a silver ring marked on the taper

Curious if the Hopper IO's air pathway is now improved and isolated from any of the internal components? IIRC the current Grasshoppers does have hot air flowing over some of the components which could pose a risk of off gassing?

That was the major feature that I hoped to see improved on those Grasshoppers.

I am having trouble posting apparently. I just wanted the clip to start in the same ring but loop higher to the top shoulder of the dial, this way it slides deeper into your pocket; however the design would need to change, so if you have a window in the clip it would highlight the temp select. Also, the current clip needs to be more solid, a longer contact point would hold it more firmly in place.

Well, my experience with my Ti Bronze is a bit different....but maybe I did it wrong.

But, the scratches really don't upset me, I just find the clip to be a useless bell and whistle tacked on but can understand how others view it differently.

I don't think this is true.. the hot air passes the screen the weed then the mouthpiece..

I wish someone could make PFE end for the grasshopper but in glass it would cool the vapor way more and look so cool! I use a glass tip with what looks like brass on the end that fits into the PFE front end and it works so well! I am thinking a full glass PFE end with the same brass parts for the threads would work even better. with the glass tip I can run full temperature no problem.

I'm sure you could contact any number of glass blowers on Instagram and they'd be more than happy to do it for a fee.

Reservations are closed. When the full io website launches pre-orders will become available for a similar release date. Those with reservations will be getting units before everyone else. Once we get a bit closer we will have reservation holders choose the unit they want and complete the balance payment.

It depends on what you're looking for isolation from, but I'm not aware of any battery powered convection portable with a true isolated airpath. It's just not the priority with portables due to size constraints.
