Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

37u is pretty much the only size I use across the board. Here's some Platinum OG flower I pressed the other day at peak ripeness.

My philosophy on micron bags is why filter flower with a more porous bag than hash, when flower has much more potential for contaminant?

Hyup. I use 50u across the board. Never saw a difference in yield so why have multiple bags.

There's a lot of shite marketing from know nothing companies. See above micron vs. humidity from nugsmasher. Anyone with a few lbs of pressing under their belt has processed more than most companies have during "R&D".

I wash silicone containers before using them. I have patients and go through quite a few. The wash water ends up milky gray so there's something on them.

I started washing them after I found powder left over from the mold. Since I've started washing them I haven't found anything in them.

Also I've tried to switch to glass, but patients prefer silicone since they're easier to empty. Personally I use glass and encourage patients to do so, but it is what it is.
Hot tip: ditch the silicone, only use glass for sauce jars, invest in good parchment for wax and shatter (you need it for pressing, anyway).

Food grade silicone breaks down over long term exposure to solvents, including terpenes.

Glass is a pain to get that last little bit out of.

Save yourself a headache and some cash, go for functionality over form and just fold wax in a parchment pouch.

Parchment paper is made of silicon as well. So i am wondering if this is actually a better or equal option to the silicon jars.

I too do not want to use glass due not being able to get all my oil out.

Wondering if there are any quality ceramic jars out there.

Edit: I should be specific about ditching the cups, not the base material.

It’s business advice. The cheap silicone cups provide no advantage over the paper and cost more. Quality paper is cheap and can be acquired as needed at local stores. If you want quality cups, they can be sourced reliably, just not as cheap or in a pinch.

I’ve seen silicone lined glass jars, and they caused the delightful white powder to appear probably the fastest of anything I’ve seen.

Well, Oil Slick has PTFE...slick sheet they call it. Not good for pressing, but very nice for packaging.

Guy I occasionally watch on youtube who presses for a job loves ptfe for pressing. I didnt get on with it personally. I dont like the big plastic sheeting and its really full of static really quickly. Just seemed to pull dust out of the air! :)

They also sell clear FEP, totally clear and more nonstick than PTFE (so they say). Looks fly. Same issue as the other containers... $$$

I didnt like this stuff either. It looks nice when packaged up carefully with gloves etc, but again, looks filthy almost immediately on real life use. I didnt find it as non stick as silicon coated paper.

And thats my fave so far (not ethically speaking but for functional use). The size of the sheets I dont like but Oilslick's Slick Paper (silicon coated paper) is what I've had the most hassle free use with, and the paper I've gone back to again and again.

I buy silicone containers off Amazon in lots of 100. Works out to something like 27 cents a piece. Glass 80 something cents,(eBay). But it's not the cost, it's what the safest, and what do patients want.

Safest is obviously glass, but patients prefer silicone. So as I await a better solution I offer both and pre wash the silicone containers. And I do see dirty water when I wash them, so there is a concern.

I was really displeased with my amazon purchases in the past, even got some counterfeit oil slicks :(

Anyway, there’s a bunch of options, each with their own caveats; nothings perfect. Guess you gotta give the people what they want.

I keep it humble with the paper so when you unwrap your present it’s like Xmas again. And it’s 1/10 the cost of a cup (though ~$.25 is pretty cheap) for a 1g pouch. And I use the parchment for processing already. And if I need cookies, it’s way more suitable than the cups ;)

I went bagless for a few days because I'm out of bags, but also, to get my head round the process.

I learned a bunch from doing this, and remembered that I always used to be bag free (and pre press with an old broken aeropress coffee maker :) ). Got bags back in the house now and I think I'll be getting less blow outs for sure.

Bagless is a good way to learn how a press works, tho I still feel I didnt get it quite perfected. The last puck def had the feel of still having more actives in it but I couldnt stop the puck from spreading out too much

Thanks for the learning in this thread, folks!

4x6 plates, but im not sure on loads. Mostly around 3.5, but the last few were unspecified amounts I did a lame, makeshift, pre press with.

Im gonna buy a pre press and aim to go bagless after that, with personal flower thats just for me I dont mind picking bits out.

EmDeemo,
I use 3x3 plates and run 2 gram loads. Sometimes 3 grams. I use the DabPress stainless prepress which, I think is about an inch or inch and a quarter in diameter. The puck never squeezes out. And, I very seldom have to pluck any bits of debris off the parchment. Sometimes. A tiny spec here and there. However, it's always right on the edge and not mixed in with the bulk of the rosin.

I have mostly used directional folding on my parchment but occasionally I just let the rosin run out all four sides. I press for personal use so small presses last a long time. I just pressed 4 grams (2 loads) of 7 different strains. Average yield is about 15% (using popcorn) so I have about 5 grams of rosin. That's going to last me quite a while.

As a bag user, I never really saw the point of a pre press, but without bags, a pre press really shines in its usefulness.

Pre-press added to my shopping list :)

EDIT: 10g pressed, 17.5% return. Used a 160u bag but pulverised the shit out of it so I may as well not have done :) Gonna use a bag to make a 10g puck next time and then remove the puck and press it bagless. See if theres a difference yield.

Woulda loved to hear more success from the oil-press-o, lol.

Need a use for my broken aero press, was hoping you were onto something

Oh! :) I get it now :)

Yes! The aeropress was a great pre press, especially as I had round plates at the time, so a round puck was perfect! Give it a go :) I finally broke mine completely otherwise I would still be using it tbh. Tho I have rectangular plates now so still would be after a more appropriately shaped pre press.

Think I accidentally made a little thca last night? I didnt wait for the plates to get up to full temp and starting pressing around 170f (plates set to 185), pressed 20g of top quality stupidly strong flower over 4 minutes or so (went up to about 17 tons). The press came out super crumbly looking and the bag was left with small amounts of white powder like stuff at some of the edges/corners.

I didnt think this was possible with just flower. I know the flower is 'clean' so Im not sure what else it could be.

That powdery looking stuff is probably plant wax. If it held much rosin it'd be sticky, if its powder its wax. Although it could be both in varying ratios. Sticky could be buddered rosin.

When I strip rosin from used pucks with iso, and then winterize with ethanol, I get much more plant wax than from the pressed rosin itself. The pucks act somewhat like a filter. When the wax dries in a coffee filter its a yellow dry powder.

FWIW, I saw a similar post on reddit with a pic, white stuff at the edge of the nylon bag being used for filtration (inside and outside of the bag). The consensus was that thc-a can occasionally be separated out in a single pass, rather than pressing into rosin, then pressing the rosin.
