Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

Is there any way to [visually?] tell how much contaminant is in rosin? I only have 160u bags and usually use them, but this past weekend I was doing some small squishes and went bagless. Outside of a couple small flakes right near the puck border the rest of the rosin looks and performs on a nail exactly like my 160u presses. I can align with your thinking on lower micron bags for flower @invertedisdead - but I'm still wondering how necessary bags are for personal use rosin...

From a certain perspective, the bags are just there to keep the flower in place when its squished, so if you like squishing without bags, I say go for it :)

Thats how I always used to squish when using hair straighteners :)

EDIT: How much crud is left in the dish after the dab? Thats a way I've been able to tell which bags I've used.

Well one thing the bags do is keep the puck size consistent, therefore PSI remains consistent during pressings. At higher amounts this does become a necessety to use bags to keep your pressables contained within your plates, but other than that it's fine to press without bags especially for small test presses.
As @emmdeemo said, outside of obvious plant contaminants, I'm looking for how much is being mopped up, the cleaner the rosin, the less gunk there will be to wipe up.

I think at some point I'll be trying 160u bags for strength for flower, inside a 37u bag for extra filtration :) I'm very good at blowing bags out so that might help a little :)

For shits n giggles.

I keep that "junk" and when there's enough, I repress at 180F, and lower pressure with 25-37 micron bags. That cleans up the rosin and makes it more use friendly.

Fuck yeah. I keep everything after pressing :) In desperate times, that shit comes in really useful, still lots of actives available in the pressed waste.

Ran out of bags, waiting on a delivery. Paper coffee filters will do for pressing this dry sift for this evenings dabs :D

One of my latest batch of no-name brand rosin bags say they are reusable, just wash and reuse, maybe in desperate times you could try?
hahaha...well, in USAF survival training they told us maggots were a great source of protein...but yes, only for desperate times! haha

My bags don't seem reusable to me but I haven't tried it. But they look pretty beat by the time I'm done.

Yeah, my presses generally dont leave the bags in any kind of cleanable or usable state.

My top tip of the day... If I'm going to be going for a second press, when I pull the puck out, I fold it in half while its still warm (more pliable and likely to stay folded), a re-press the folded bag.

Never used the method of folding the bag and repressing. Any issues with blowouts doing this?

Also, i was reading today on the vapelife forum, someone pretty knowledgeable, was talking about how they did tests on rosin they made and stored in silicon containers. Results showed small bit of the container in the oil. Anyone her back this issue up?

I wash silicone containers before using them. I have patients and go through quite a few. The wash water ends up milky gray so there's something on them.

I started washing them after I found powder left over from the mold. Since I've started washing them I haven't found anything in them.

Also I've tried to switch to glass, but patients prefer silicone since they're easier to empty. Personally I use glass and encourage patients to do so, but it is what it is.

Yes, but then I'm always over filling and over pressing so blow outs are my forte :)

I've heard, but not looked into it so cannot verify the information, that certain terpenes eat thru silicon. I also once had a silicon container that start having the concentrates 'soak' into it in some way and stay strangely oily no matter how much I cleaned it, but thats again, anecdotal.

Its still not perfect, like your patients find, but glass is obviously a better option.

I find concentrates are a fucking minefield of products I'd rather not be using.

I have a Nugsmasher og. Supposed to keep the plates locked and closed when not in use. The plates loose pressure and always open when not in use. Normal?

It means pressure is leaking off somewhere. Strange instructions. I always leave any pressure off when not in use. But I don't have a nugmasher.

Do you see oil? It's likely leaking past a seal somewhere.

Maybe it means the release valve needs to be closed and the plates locked when not in use, but forgets to add that it means no pressure should be held.

Certainly, my standard shop press says to store it with no pressure.

Pop Quiz:

You are mid-press, and see dreaded blowout coming through the gap in the plates... What do you do?

A. Back off, re-bag and re-press.

B. Power through it and clean the debris out of the rosin after.

C. Set fire to the evidence, flee to Spain and assume the identity of a dead child.

C, always do C (unless you're already in Spain).

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
I press pounds of herb. I never use a filter bag. My rosin comes out as clean as any other I see.

Filter bags are a luxury but not essential and could be considered wasteful. I get higher yields bagless.

What temps do you tend to press at?

I've done bagless and don't really see much change of yield, mine just comes out cleaner with a bag [without the need to pick out debris].

I've also found bagless to be less favorable when dealing with trim. Nugs okay without a bag, but trim has not worked for me.

IME, the only real advantage to bags is like someone said earlier.... to contain the size of the puck. I use my 3x3 mostly and I can do up to 4 gram loads. After that, without a bag, the load squeezes out of the 3x3 plates and starts to suck up the rosin.

I don't press keif but I understand bags are needed for that, also.

Are you bagless folks using a pre press? If not, how are you stopping the flower from just spreading out during the press?
