Discontinued The Grasshopper

Vaporific

All who wander are not lost...
This may be a placebo effect since it's been so long since I've had a working hopper but I don’t ever remember being able to whitewall my 1.5 foot bong on the first dial setting, ever. Before this repair I would only use my hopper on setting 5 – that was the only way it would whitewall my bong. Are these new heaters more efficient some way to enable extraction at a lower temperature?
Join the club. My RMA’d pre-order Ti works so much better at a lower temp - natively however since I don’t use glass much - than it did prior to the RMA. I’ll defer to HL and anyone else about the technical stuff - and I’m already a bit baked by my Hopper while grilling dinner :D - but repaired units work more efficiently and better. That’s all
I know. Except my comfort temp went down a full number. I was without mine for a year and the prior year was largely ineffective and not producing much vapor. It’s the opposite now and I can’t complain...:peace:

I like @Ratchett s caps more than the full sleeves which I found a bit hard to get open. Love the caps.

Me too! I'm a huge fan of the battery caps. I released those after the battery sleeves and to be honest I'm not satisfied with the battery sleeves. I'll likely be discontinuing those sleeves in the near future unless I get a special request to print some in the future.

Dude, the caps are perfect and all that anyone needs, in my never humble opinion. haha

I actually bought the sleeves first....great idea on paper, just too sticky.

The caps, are just wonderful and I have no worries about shorting out a GH battery with them on.

Cheers and thanks....got a whole drawer full of your stuff from lotus stands, to funnels, to WPA. You do good work, mate.

Before this repair I would only use my hopper on setting 5

My OG GHs, when working wonderfully, I ran at 4.1 on the dial and that's all I could stand.

Out of my two GHs, one is working wonderful after some RMAs...the other, still too cool to use.

But the one that was fixed has a GREAT heater in it and I now run down around 3.5

New heaters run hotter....or really, they run like they were supposed to just many didn't.

You definitely deserve to hear it from them at least as a form letter in response to your email but fwiw they did at one point state above that they would make good on all of the outstanding warranty units once footing was regained, and especially after the batteries are back flowing freely like the spice melange :D. So that sounds like good news but also like there will be a delay. If I remember correctly they were currently working on the stuff that had been sent to them in November 2018 when Mercury went into retrograde in Scorpio or something... causing the fire.

It might be an overall everything happens for a reason and we're better off now because s*** blew up in November thing if your warranty unit ends up being replaced with one of the Mark II units.

I was stoked that I waited so long to start any kind of warranty return process for my various defective units when I saw how amazing the brand new stuff I received in September was working lol. I literally had it all boxed up and ready to send on the morning of the fire.

I'll admit here in front of all of you that the reason I never tried to return anything is because I was afraid they would piss me off by not adequately handling the process and then I would feel like I could no longer make purchases from them in retaliation. Yet, things work so well when it's not broken, I couldn't risk that situation might happen:uhoh:

thats so funny man....especially since I’m getting a vibe that hopper labs could literally set your house on fire and you’d still not be too pissed at them. :hmm:

I tried the triple holder and some batts did get stuck in there. I believe there could be variation in battery dia., one to the next, and possibly some variation in the carrier, but I do agree some other design should supplant this one. I'll be getting some caps with next order; they look vg in use, in recent pictures of small cases folks have posted. I have Pax2 end caps of same material as these (I assume) and they work great.

Which is weird, because at one point the 250 preorder spots were "sold out." I guess folks could've ordered more than one unit each. hmmm
Two thoughts on this;
1. Scalpers!
2. Don Trump Jr.'s book rose meteorically to top of best seller list, but it was boosted in large manner buy a 'bulk purchase' by the Republican National Committee, for promotional sales by them (i.e. for 'resale').

So I'm wondering who's mom bought all those hopper reservations?

On a more mundane note, I'm also wondering @Hopper Labs, how the HL folks are doing with the temporary facilities? A brief update would be really interesting, I'm sure. Status on things like parts inventory and machinery readiness, etc., etc. are all interesting to me; I ran a small shop for a long time.

The roll-out of 'new' has been spotlighted, and for good reason, but I'm beginning to wonder - as others are - about some of my warranty stuff. One is from Nov. '18, a time frame mentioned a couple of times recently. And I have another issue not yet even sent to them (though it can wait).

Will Grasshopper I ever go back into production? Or are we seeing it's end in slow motion, with all new hoppers to be the new *whatsitsname*?

And if one or more batches of battery are on order from manufacturer, surely they must be making some guess as to delivery? Then again, we've seen how that can go...

As always, more information would be better than less, just give it to us straight!

Don't get me wrong. This company has a pretty bad rep for their service and reliability, but I STILL wanted one for the form factor and went out of my way to search for ones secondhand. Even with the, "DON'T BUY A HOPPER, 14th RMA!" posts and, "PROPRIETARY BATTERIES THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN GET!" posts (which, hilariously, I now know the feeling of), I still got it the moment I saw it because it just looks so good and (seems to) work so well (when it works).

They like the idea of the hopper so much that they're willing to eat the $100 it takes to pre-order even after the fire and battery business left most of us unable to even use ours. That makes more sense than speculating that it was scalpers or aliens or someone's mom, or that they're lying.

@Hopper Labs - I have a few questions – one on the heater and another on temperature settings.

1) I recently received my newly repaired hopper (I got it in the mail the day before the fire - GT012109).
2) Can you please explain how the power consumption varies from one temperature setting to the next? For example let’s assume every hit on the hopper lasts 5 seconds, should you be able to get twice as many hits on temp setting 2 than temp 4?

1. The new heaters are better in every way. There have been many improvements over the last year thanks to in-house production.

2. If the time of the hit and volume of air that you move through the device are both constants there will be less power consumption on lower settings. It is a complex thermal dynamics problem to tell you accurately how much. There are a lot of variables that affect power consumption. To simplify, if both hits were taken from the device having sat at room temperature for at least an hour you would probably see close to but not quite doubling battery life you are suggesting.

Brief Update:

All major critical equipment has been cleaned and moved to the temporary space next door. We will likely be in this space for around 4 months as the old space is remodeled and the new fire suppression system is added. We are starting machines up one by one addressing any problems and then working on the next. Most of the damage is to air-lines, which are relatively easy to replace. The focus will first be to get the heater production line up and running. The new space requires a new subpanel for additional power we hope to have that by next week. The electricians have completed the assessment and will start work shortly.

We will be making a trip to visit the original battery factory and the new battery factory in the middle of next week. After this, we should have a timeline and more updates on when the new batteries will be coming out.

Don't get me wrong.
On the contrary, I think maybe you got me wrong!
My 2 reasons were for 2 reasons;
1. to be witty, sarcastic; funny! and not meant to be really well-argued speculations.
2. to explain (humorously) why the number of Grasshopper+'s apparently reserved could be greater than the number of orders written (see @NOLOGO's post, to which I was replying).

For those who just really, really want a Grasshopper, like, now, I mention again that The Herb Cafe in Canada seems to have stock of SS and Ti hoppers. Price is even slightly less than HL retail (SS at $279 CAD = approx $211 USD). I've had good interactions with Sachin there.

EDIT;
And thanks for the update @Hopper Labs !

I take precautions with battery charging but no. if those three guys running the whole business by themselves @Hopper Labs broke into my house and set the whole place on fire while I was sleeping, then I would have some very severe criticism. And I would also be a little bit with my feelings hurt like why did you do it to my house when that other guy was so much more critical of you? LOL. If they just rummaged around through the fridge and left some lunch meat out on the counter then you're right, I probably would even give them a pass on that: they're under a lot of pressure they were probably just needing to blow off some steam by breaking into some houses and spraying a little graffiti on my wall. Not a big deal.

So I'm wondering who's mom bought all those hopper reservations?

I may have reserved a hopper I'm not admitting anything yet

@Hopper Labs have a good trip to the factory get that shit sorted. DO NOT ALL FLY ON SAME PLANE. just in case. You're too important you should always have a designated Survivor and put the other two guys each on a different plane:myday:

Only one pre-order deposit from me, a few minutes after their FC post

Placed a few shirt and bits orders as well, just because. As you can see by the time stamps, I drink throughout the day

I got a spare ti body also and told them not to worry if it takes more than 3-5 days, go ahead and take their time and overclock it when time permits. Technically I said don't overclock it if the ones you sent me before weren't already overclocked and they responded mysteriously something like don't worry the new one will be good.

@ChooChooCharlie your pile of shirts and silicon tips was legit tho, i saw the evidence heh

Are you wearing one of the shirts right now? :brow:

Long time lurker, first time posting. With that out of the way..

Has anyone experienced the following:

RMA Ti received mid-October 2019:

Insert freshly charged GHB2 ->
Begin to screw backend onto body ->
As soon as backend makes contact with battery ->
Instant red solid lights for anywhere from 3-10 seconds ->
Unresponsive hopper.

Clicking the button/adjusting the dial has zero effect.

After sleuthing this thread, I think it’s the backend. I’d order a replacement but they are unavailable on the site. Have already emailed support.

Forum/ @Hopper Labs please advise (considering the warranty portal is down for new requests for who knows how long).

Does this always happen or sometimes it works okay? Make sure all the threads, on the body/back-end and the brass contact are very clean. Already did this?

I would also try blowing it out with some of that canned air from Office Depot before giving up. Good luck bro

Hopefully support can sell you a replacement back end which I would definitely say is worth the investment even though I can understand frustration with buying something to fix something that is already back from warranty. being able to do what you want to do sooner matters too, life is short. They can add them to a cart for you even though they aren't for sale on the website, if they have them in stock I don't know for sure

There is also a way to clean under the dial, i.e. the notch or space just below it, and it was mentioned briefly a few pages back but not very detailed. I’ve never done it but curious how to do so. I got my Ti back a month before @vapeverythingnyc and haven’t had any issues with mine and is still working very well. I have cleaned the threads and contact on the backend however (they needed it) but I haven’t had any issues since its return from RMA.

And speaking of which, it’s almost Hopper time! I got my new Dynavap today which I’m hoping to try too - if the torch lighter shows up. I ordered directly from Dynavap since POTV wouldn’t ship to MA due to the state vaping ban (ugh!), and I needed to order a torch separately. Oh the travesty...:peace:

Always, and after talking to my fiancé again, she says she ‘might’ have dropped it, which means she did. So most likely user error and not another manufacturing defect.

I am PISSED to say the least.

Edit- I made sure all contacts were clean as could be and did all the usual troubleshooting. She definitely dropped and damaged it.

I'm sure she makes up for stuff like this in other ways. I hope. definitely a hard drop could crack something critical. Id go with email support and ask them to add a back end to a cart for you route, and maybe have one of those this is why we can't have nice things talks? :worms:

lol yea, it’s all good. Stuff happens. Just wish it happened to a different device. Good advice.

Welcome to the forum!
I had a warranty hopper come back in Oct. and without a fresh, as-in 'new' battery (not new batch, just new) it would just go red right a way, then lights off after a few seconds. HL might still have one they can send to you, since @Hopper Labs did make the offer to folks with recently serviced units.
When mine came back and did this red light thing I was sure my batteries were okay, because they worked in other hoppers. But these new internals seem to need batts in really great shape to work at all.
I had even sent the body back a second time and they checked it out, but still my batts would not power it up properly.

Did you by chance put your battery in backward?
If you did, it instantly shorts the backend rendering it useless. Trust me I know, I did it twice.

@Hopper Labs, this problem is a HUGE design flaw which I’m surprised hasn’t been addressed. I bet a lot of RMAs are because of this. If it weren’t for the slight burnt smell that is emitted after the battery touches the backend contact, I wouldn’t have known that’s the reason it shorted. Kudos on the incredible esthetic design, but not worth it for the headaches it brings.
