Cannabis Geeks?

So, I am a computer geek by trade. I go to peoples homes and businesses and help them with their computer problems. Takes a lot of patience and problem solving skills, but I have been doing it a long time and really do enjoy it. And folks who need the help are very appreciative and tend to rely on their geek, which is also a good feeling.

My state is going legal recreational in January (if the Gov will sign the fucking bill) and I have been thinking about finding a way to break into the industry. Given I have been waiting 50 years for this to happen it only seems right.

What I am wondering is, in states that have legal rec, has their been a demand for Cannabis Geeks to help folks learn how to properly consume cannabis flower and concentrates and help them choose strains and vaping equipment, and even how to roll a joint? I would think this would be a very common need, and unless stores wanted to develop their own "Geek Squad" (or even if they do) there would be a market for this type of help.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

we think alike except there are still many many hurdles and people trying to sift through the lies and deceit perpetuated over time by main stream ... just talking to the average person they have zero clue and you would have to give a lengthy course on changing the lies to truth which takes a long time ...
just helping one person awakes everyone though too... but just simple things we know could really benefit many people too.

I expect that many of the folks who will be the "new users" of cannabis will actually be folk who used it in the past, maybe while in school, but gave it up because it was illegal or because they had children. They won't need help getting high, but they may very well need help learning to Vape or choosing from the huge selection of devices out there. I frankly have stuff to learn myself having little experience with concentrates.
There will be lots of places people need help, and I like to provide help, so I think this may be a good thing to help me keep the bills at bay. And like with computers I expect many interested people to be somewhat lost in the wilderness and looking for guidance. From the outside in particular this industry can be confusing and intimidating.

This could even be fun...

Well, I guess if this is a thing it isn't one that folks want to share info about. I'm guessing this kind of thing is mostly done by employees of dispensaries, but I would think there was a market for independent people to do this in an unaffiliated way...

We'll see how this looks as we approach the horizon...

I've consumed cannabis all my life. Through the majority of my adult years combustion was the ingestion method and rolling joints, hot knifing and using a pipe were the skills learned at a young age through friends.

A few years ago, when I discovered vaping, there was no good, easy to find, impartial information on the types of vapes available the pros and cons and the variety of techniques to help hone the experience. As a consequence, I bought a series of vaporizers from local head shops which were absolute crap; enter the Candy pens. The head shop personnel were completely unhelpful and acted as though they didn't actually know that these devices were for vaping cannabis. Mind you we were illegal at the time and maybe they thought I was a cop or something, posing as an interested older customer. The few friends that I have that partook hadn't even heard of vaping, except one friend who had a Volcano.

I could have dearly used a primer on vaping and all things about vapes.

It wasn't until I stumbled upon FC that it all changed for me. I found the Vapman the Lotus and the Vapcap along with a community of people eager to discuss techniques, equipment and experience. Without these sorts of forums the consumer is lost in a cloud of vapor.

We are legal here now in Canada but I find nothing has changed. People still don't even know that vaping exists and the media, whether discussing recreational or medical cannabis, still only ever refer to combustion. I think that helpful information is sorely needed at large. Here on FC we are some of the blessed few that have discovered access to vape info.

Similarly I have used cannabis since a young teen and I had to learn most of it myself, tho I had an older brother who, with his friends, taught me the basics like rolling a joint. He ended up following me into other things but that isn't for this group.

Anyway I only learned about vaping in 2013 and although I had a few hits from a Volcano I didn't really get it and continued to combust. My Mom was still alive then and was trailing an oxygen hose around her house, so I had plenty of incentive to quit smoking cannabis, while I had finally given up cigarettes several years prior.

Then I found this group and the rest is history. Everything I learned about vaping I learned from this group or by doing it. I knew only one other person who vaped at that time (the volcano guy) and he really didn't know much but was committed to his volcano and bags. Bags never really did it for me so I never did get a volcano, but I got an HA instead and that led to my trying lots of methods as HAs are good for that.

So it seems really clear that there is a need for Cannabis Geeks or others who are willing to share knowledge and methods with the uninitiated and the curious. There are so many products and methods out there that it is really easy to get lost. And for us old farts the tech involved can be disconcerting and unnatural, just like computers are for seniors, so I imagine, especially is states newly legalized, that there should be much need for Cannabis Geeks, and I am in. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of my customers for computer help need these services as well. But I don't think I will be offering them until January... ;)

Are you accepting resumes?

Like @Squiby, learned most on FC (and Skunk Pharm, of course). Still don't know anyone else who dabs.

Imagine you might want to be extra careful about liability issues. Early in CO's legalization, read about canna-tourism businesses that provided similar functions. You could probably learn from their experience.

Liability would be the same with or without certification. If the advice is right, no problem. If wrong, the reliance damages will be the same. Certification is going to put a higher duty on the person certified to act as others so certified act. It does not give any protection other than criminal protection if you are doing acts that require licensing.

*I* think there is a need for a CG. But, no where I go has anything like that. Budtenders are generally young and exceed their "training" when thinking of the difference between sativa and indica. Some are good and you get to know them over time and dispensary conversations often include exchanges of facts and ideas. It's just not the usual.

Then we get to the harder part, who'd pay for it? To me, the one's who would really care are those seeking out specialized knowledge already. Tips on getting the concentrate to budder or potential temps for different conditions are not questions for those buying their first pre-roll.

I think the best way would be some gig-type economy using a robust blog software. Charge a fee per month (repeating-cancel when desired) for some cannabis content and advice from you and others who want the gig with some outreach for private sessions where you communicate.

How the new laws are applied here will make a big difference on how something like this would work. I believe there is going to be a provision that would allow smoking rooms or some "privatized" public usage in or in association with a dispensary. That would allow for some training, probably with CBD or very low potency cannabis, at the store and a "teacher" could easily be an employee. It that isn't how it's gonna go one might need to "train" in the home of the customer, much like computer geeking is.
It's all going to depend on how the new law is applied and how cooperative the state actually is. Impossible to predict at this point.

I think instructing/helping cannabis newbies and long term users like myself with vapes and concentrates would be useful and appreciated. I don't know if doing any of this as an independent at the start would work though. I've worked with and taught computer tech most of my life and independent consulting takes time to build up a base and that usually requires building a reputation first. I think being the person behind the dispensary counter or even better .... finding a dispensary that was interested in offering free classes as a marketing approach would probably be a great way to start. Once you build your base/reputation you could offer to teach classes at multiple dispensaries/locations. Doing classes for free to start might get the foot in the door.

When I first found vaping around 5 years ago I started with the MFLB and it was GREAT! But I soon got VAS because I kinda felt like there was probably something better out there. I also enjoy teaching myself tech but there was so much info out there. Around that same time @stickstones was offering a vape concierge service to help vape newbs and to build up a vape retail presence. Sticks did a kind of interview with me to find out the details and then recommended different vape tech. Some of which he sold and some of which he didn't. The amount of money and frustration he saved me was crazy good even though I didn't know it then. But the biggest benefit to working with Sticks was when my wife took seriously ill and that's when his years of expertise really changed our lives. This is where the goodness is IMO but it might take awhile to build up a "practice".
