Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

I’ve been busy this weekend on the 3 ton Dabpress.

Top jar is Jack Herer #8. 6g in, 1.5g out for 25% first press. This was 2min 15sec at 190F. Came out a really nice super citrusy flavor.

Bottom left is Jet Fuel. 3.5g in, .8g out for 22.9% first press. 3min at 195F. Nice consistency, but man some nasty aroma and flavor although true to the herb it was pressed from. Equal parts fruit and vomit. :uhoh:

Bottom right is Pineapple Chunk. 6.3g in, 1.3g out for 21% on first press. 2:45 at 195F. This was interesting looking herb - purple and black which I think resulted in the weird color here. Tastes great, though and true to its pineapple name.

I like how it looks all nice and hashy! :smug:

Lead mine? I must have missed something?
Sorry to confuse, I could have gotten second-hand units for free years ago, but they were at Mt Isa Mines (a Lead Mine) as these pumps are mainly used in the mining and construction industry, most second-hand units for sale are ex mines.
@Hackerman, The 3 ton unit looks cumbersome and looks as if it requires quite a lot of physical effort to pump, that is why I have been looking more at the 10t unit...I dunno, I will just keep watching for now.

Is flower rosin to be considered fullmelt? Or will i only get to the fullmelt mark if i press some very fine hash that indeed leaves almost no residue behind after a dab on the quartz?

TBH, i often kind of search for FLower with nasty aroma as it is often a very good sign for potency and FX... and i never want to get the nice and natural smelling stuff which reminds on actual gras (like in the garden).
But thats just me - a hint of vomit or old sweat can t hurt...

Yo by any chance has anybody come up with a substitute for or technique for pressing without parchment paper yet? :) Just asking..

Speaking for myself, I ONLY want to press with parchment.
It keeps everything so clean and neat.

I tend to use double parchment to avoid absolutely any bleed through to my plates.

+1000 @FlyingLow - there are people who press without Parchment and use drip tek and you can use ptfe instead of Parchment but not for me...

Have a great day & happy Pressing

Not always. My strongest rosin, nine pound hammer, has the mildest aroma of anything else I grow. Just a pleasant fruity aroma. Not strong at all.

Could somebody explain the formula to calculate the pressure used? @psychonaut maybe?

I changed my pump that had a manometer in tons for one that mesures in PSI...

Does it really matter? Once you identify a sweet spot you can use that number for reference. Whatever that number is.

I'm using an air assist pump with no gauge what so ever. I go by the sound of the pump. I can check pressure with the manual pump handle.

While it sounds primiitve I haven't had a blow out or any other problems in over 6 months and close to a lb of herb pressed.

Can someone tell me if I'm having a senior moment...
I've just pressed 3.5g and returned .71g,
My maths says 20% return??

Ps I'm vaped so probably wrong

(PSI from Gauge x hydro cylinder area) / area of load = PSI on the Puck

Well, your math is right....did you back out the weight of the collection paper (the paper you had it on when weighing)? Is so, then it sounds like you are good.

I guess I missed my squishiversary. It looks like I got started with a kipozi hair straightener a little over 2 years ago, thanks to @invertedisdead recommendation. My how time flies. I've learned a lot since then, mostly thanks to FC. Have moved on from the straightener to hydraulic assisted, but that proof of concept was all that I needed to convert from BHO to rosin.

Some of the best lessons I've learned over the years.

Don't apply too much pressure, first and foremost.
Keep your buds hydrated to 60-62% if you want yields. Yes that includes using a hygrometer, not guessing.
If your yields are not good, chances are neither is your starting material.
Pressing shake, ground up buds or dirty kief is a poor choice of starting material.
Always save your pucks for making edibles or tinctures.
Rosin is best vaped with a nail or LAYG atomizer.
No, tanks still don't work well for rosin over the long term, but try as we might.
If someone tells you 220F is too hot to press on, tell them to get more experience :p

Could you explain more about your comments about if 220F is too hot?

And too much pressure? Because of blowouts?

I'm just curious as to your reasoning.

I don't think I've ever pressed that hot with my current set up. At least for a first press. But with more pressure (20T) I don't think you need as much heat.

On some varieties I go as low as 180F. Pressing at that temp sometimes makes for a stiffer rosin on sappy varieties.

And I do use a lot of pressure. As long as I'm not blowing out bags I feel I'm good.
