Finished this beta unit today. Ran it for 10 hours prior to sealing up the base and inserting the washer
over the heater cover retaining screws. A local friend of mine said he'd test a unit for me so it'll be
the first one to go out into the wild :nod:.

The washer down there is a M8x25mm drilled out to 9.5mm. I was going to put a circlip in to hold it in
place but it's firmly fixed just below an intake hole and doesn't move or rattle at all. Can always fit the
circlip later if it ever needs it. Used the M11x1 tap and screwed the jackplug connector into place.
Not sure how long that'll last in a pine body - we'll see.
And that's the TTwisted gauze forming the debris screen. Saw it mentioned by @RastaVapa and am
giving it a go. It's certainly tough but consequently difficult to form into a bucket shape. More work needed on that.

Here's an idea that someone might find useful. Used a circlip to support the cork plug in the base.
Here's a pic of it in my rustic unit. Made a small gouge tool to cut a circular recess in the inner wall
of the base just below the connector. Doesn't need to be perfect - just enough to locate the circlip
where you want it.

Note the soldering iron burn marks there - can't see 'em after the leather goes on ofc :)

Really sorry for not being able to participate here as much, as I like to in the last couple of weeks, but the months from February till end of May are the busiest time for my regular business anyway and so time is a real issue here right now.

If the modified M8/25 washer holds fast on its own, it's a perfectly fine solution. Also looks better, than the M13/25 washer I'm using here. Still would consider an additional clipring, as that can expand and compensate in case the wood is expanding/contracting due to heat degradation over time. You can get the circlips also in a ss version (with a silvery surface), which makes for better looks :)

How did you make the gouge tool for creating that circular recess? Can you post a pic? Really good idea!

@blokenoname Yep, I'll put clipring in there for good measure.

The gouge tools are pretty basic.
This one's about as basic as it gets - a modified piece of coat-hanger wire!

Remember that conversation about using glass beads for insulation purposes?
Bought some recently and the thread hole was too small :doh: (fortunately, they were very cheap).
So I bought some more and these fit the resistor wire and also my silver plated copper wire which is 0.9mm. Was concerned that they might be acrylic so I put one on a piece of wire and cooked it over
a candle for about two minutes. Definitely glass :nod:

It's really annoying when 'real life' - whatever that is - gets in the way of the log-making fun :(.
Still making progress but it'll be very slow for the next few weeks.

Hey everyone, I've been a lurker for a long time, but came across this thread and had to create and account on here to join in the fun! This thread has so many great ideas and builds, I'm starting plan my own build now. I'm having some trouble finding the thin walled ss tubing in the states, but I was able to find some 1mm walled Titanium tubing: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/391940335833 Does anyone know if that will have the same issues as the 1mm ss tubing or will it be ok because it is titanium?

I am a Woodturner and have turned a few Dynavap bodies but lately I have been looking for new projects to turn. Idk why I never thought of one of these lol

Had it running for about 8 hours yesterday. Filled the living room up with the smell of pine.
Still have to put a washer and clipring down there to cover the screws and make it look nice 'n tidy.
And the base well needs closing up. I'll get those jobs done this morning.

Couple of minor changes on this one. Used the glass beads as an extra insurance policy against
shorting the circuit. Note the blob of solder to hold the beads up against the resistor where you
want them. Only one of the wires should touch the heater cover ofc.

And a little help when soldering the wires to the jack plug connector is always useful.
Used a 1.5mm drill bit to make that little hole in the contact - the one closest to the camera.
Now wire can be threaded thro both contacts (not just the one) and bent back on itself.
So if the solder fails the wire still stays put. It's slightly tricky to drill but I think it's well worth
the effort.

And I read somewhere that it's a good idea to rough up the wire ends with a bit of sandpaper prior to soldering as it gives the solder more grip - so I did that too.

Oh yes! By all means! You should always treat the contacts and the wire with a bit if sandpaper, roughing up the surfaces to help the solder stick. Sorry, if I forgot to mention that :uhoh:

The hole drilled through the + pin and the blop of solder holding the beads in place are great ideas! :clap:. This gets better and better.

Nothing on sale from the Brainiac Towers gift shop, I'm afraid. CE certification pretty much rules that out.
Besides, my apprenticeship is incomplete. Standardised and professional-looking units are some way off yet.

In the meantime I'm still making beta units for local friends from that shamfered pine handrail. It's good
training. I finished the latest one earlier this week. It has the 10mm OD x 9mm ID ss heater cover, TTwisted gauze debris screen and glass bead insulation. Also tried out cutting back the inner wall of the base well with a .5 inch chisel. This allows the retaining nut better purchase on the connector thread.
You can just about see I've tapped a thread into the wood there too.

Here's the heater cover with the .5mm wall. That impressively deep waist prevents the debris screen
going any higher and prevents stem tips going any lower. I made it by swapping the pipe cutter cutting wheel with a suitably sized washer.

It has two of those 4mm air inlet holes - there's another one on the other side.

Main interest, tho, is my 'rustic' project.
It's not a commercial proposition but it's one way of making truly unique logs.
Here's the the one I've been working on this week. Taken from a branch of sycamore cut by council
workers during footpath clearance near my home. Devon cream coloured wood with yellow highlights
that the photo doesn't do justice to.

Roughly egg-shaped in section. Feels very natural in the hand. Will finish the build in the next
couple of days and post more details.

Hi there :)

Yes, as @brainiac already pointed out, sadly the requirement for CE certification, that is mandatory for selling electrical devices within the EU single market, poses a real roadblock for offering my Logs officially for sale here. I enjoy building Logs, but I certainly wouldn't like getting cease & desist letters and paying fines :(

That is not to say, that CE compliance is a bad thing in itself (I rather like the thought of being guaranteed, that my off the shelf e-ciggie doesn't blow up in my face), but identifying all the ins and outs of the 20 or so applying EU safety guidelines for yourself is nigh impossible, if you don't happen to be an engineer and a lawyer by profession combined into one person yourself :p

So specialized 3rd party services have to get involved to manage that CE compliance thingie for you and as they're private sector, they regretfully don't come cheap and break the bank.

I have, however, still plans for offering a limited number of units for sale in the US :) and will also delve deeper into the CE thingie later on, to see if there are less pricy ways to officially achieve this, but most of this has to wait at least till the end of May, as I already mentioned.
The requirements of my regular job/business take precedence until then.

It's a bit bigger than my other logs. It's 10.6cm in height. Max base width is 5.2mm, min is 4.6mm.
By chance, one of my leather offcuts is a mustard yellow which is perfect for this unit :)

Have got 1.2m of oak handrail on order. Not shamfered and, in terms of quality, a big step up from
the pine that I've been using for non-Rustics so far.

Thanks @blokenoname, I think I was too wrapped up in trying to get the heat tube to fit over a Dynavap tip. I decided to go with the 10mm OD/9mm ID ss tube for the heat tube and make my own stem using 9mm OD/8mm ID ss tube. I just got most of the parts in and am going to try my hand at building it this week. I went with the 24v/40w heater and a dimmer and plan on doing the open bottom design for this first one.

@brainiac, here is one of my most recent DynaVap bodies:

Really getting jealous here ;)

Tech parts: it's just 3 cheap dimmers/motor controlers without any casing. Bottom right is a small buck/boost converter board, which also allows for exeeding/boosting the max voltage output of a given PS. It would need an additional screen to show the voltage output though, to be of real use.

Re usage of the Dynavyp tips: the Woodscents heater cover allows for the Dynavap tips to slide over actually, not in. It's narrower at the top, i.e. only 8mm OD. So the OD 10mm/ID 8mm vapcap tip slips over this narrower part of the heater cover. I emulated this in this unit here, by using my standard 9mm/8mm heater cover and then inserting a short piece of the 8mm/7mm tubing, I use for my tips:



The insert is still a bit too long here, though. Half the length should do.

Thanks @blokenoname! I'm still new to log vapes and am still trying to wrap my brain around how they work. For me troubleshooting while building something is the best way for me to learn. Getting the tubing in and seeing how well they fit got me excited! I plan on silver soldering the heater cartridge to some stainless steel wire and I just need to pick up some glass beads for it. I may have missed it somewhere in the discussion, but does it matter which lead you should insulate? I measured the continuity from the ss cartridge cover to either lead and there is no continuity so I would assume it wouldn't matter, but I figured I'd ask the question any way

So hey folks .. Can't belive I just stumbled into this thread but I got a Enano that I been wanting to change to 220v for years now

She is as reliable as hell and never failed me but I am so damn sick of the buzzing off the voltage converter and the fact it weights kilos

Tired off also packing it up every night as its large and heavy

I need first off all to find a heater and then second is the fact I don't have a lathe :/

But I got one of the best log vape shell in the business :brow: if I go a head and take it apart :uhoh:

Wonder though if it would be worth it or not because I don't want a worse vape :hmm:

Yes, loads of info. As much as you need to build your own log.
I built mine from the info that blokenoname has generously posted here.
You don't need a lathe to make a log but a drill press is hard to do without.
If you're particularly fond of your enano I'd suggest that you wait until you're confident
that you can put it back together again before you pull it apart.
Building your own log is a project that I can heartily recommend and it would give you the skills you need to convert the enano.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do and please keep us updated.

I revamped a broken Nano only a couple of month ago for a mate, replacing its broken AC110v/11w heater with a DC 12v/10w heater cartridge, running it from a 12v/1A off the shelf DC power supply. You'll find more info and pics of the revamped unit here:

Working really well, but I've no way of comparing it directly to the performance of the original 110v heater, as that was broken and it's hard to import the Nano in Germany.

For a 220v version, I haven't found a compatible heater cartridge yet, but I know, that @ACE OF VAPE is working on a 220v version right now. Maybe yours could then be updated?

@blokenoname That indeed was a great rebuild of e-nano. Alternatively one can wire the heater directly to the inbuilt 2-pin socket and rewire the power adapter's 2.1mm jack barrel with male 2-pin plug,the idea behind this is to preserve the aesthetics better.
I have one log running with this type of connection for a while and i dont notice it to get hot or anything like that,compared to the 2.1 barrel sockets .I admit it is uglier but it is also harder to pull off the log.

Haha well the mentioned reconditioned nano is working well out here in the wild! Great plugged straight into the wall. Maybe one day if I need to send any other logs back off to my good friend @blokenoname for any other reason, I'll send the enano too to see about experimenting with that wiring! But for now its working fabulously! Still prefer my Misty's though :brow:

I got some wood slabs that been drying for some years and aiming to carve out a cheery piece from an old cherry tree because my Enano has the cheapest wood and also cracked so time to update

I can do soldering and easily deal with wires and with the help from this thread it's going to be no problem ;)
