Newbie Question: Is Dabbing a Form of Vaping?

I'm sure this question gets asked a lot by people like me who are completely new to this, but I couldn't find a pre-existing thread.

I've heard of people that dab frequently getting annoyed when it's suggested they're vaping, but also getting equally annoyed if it's said they are smoking. So, is dabbing it's own specific thing? Is combustion involved to any degree? I always thought dabbing was a form of vaping until I heard that term wasn't properly representative. By my definition, vaping should involve no combustion at all (though I know most vape pens involve some form of combustion whereas tabletop vaporizers usually have no combustion at all, assuming you don't crank the temperature). Would anyone mind giving me some clarity on this?

Hiya! Great post & great question, but I think you might get more/better answers from experienced members if you post this in the Ask FC section. Or maybe the Concentrates thread? Just a thought... I would say that dabbing is vaporizing but I’m not an expert on anything!

Thanks! I'll delete this post and try one of those sections instead. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Generally "smoking" is equated to combustion (a more defined term) and you are definitely NOT combusting with dabs. Def more like flower vaping in that you are boiling off desired organic compounds but not with the challenge of getting it out of a complex plant matrix.

Leave the arguments to the epistemology experts...if you like it, do it.

Ohmygawd I have seen the light! And guess who is my new guru?!

Let us read from the Book of @Baron23

Yea verily, worry not what your brethren say. For it matters not.
When I was a child, I had a child’s understanding.
Do not let their blasphemy also defile and spoil
your moments of pleasure and inner exploration.
For our time is brief, therefore let us not tarry -
I say unto you my sisters and brothers - if you like it, do it.”
Amen

@LilahLaLand77 As you don’t know me, I need to say don’t take me seriously. Also...
The more I think about it, it’s pretty obvious that dabbing is vaporization. I feel that you now have a moral obligation to smack these fools with some science.
Do you think that maybe these peeps get annoyed because “vaping” may be construed as huffing on a JUUL? Or any one of the ejuice/nicotine delivery systems? I only say this because here, amongst friends, I read or write “vape” with a common understanding what the material is. But IRL, I can see how regular people (not freaks like us) get it all confused. Or perhaps these people you’ve heard of that dab frequently are just people who genuinely think that dabbing is neither smoking or vaporizing? I’m no longer amazed at what people will believe.

#1: So are you gonna vape juice?
#2: Nah fam, some herb.
#1: I got some juice that made from herb!
#2: Nah dude, that’s sauce.
#1: The guy said it has live diamonds in it.
#2: Man, let’s dab some of that!
#1: The guy also said that dabbing is its own thing. Like scientifically, y’know?

Where’s @invertedisdead with his take on this controversial issue?!

Love it...my new motto..well, bit long for a motto...maybe my new monologue. Like Jules Winnfield LOL

It seems like "dabbing" is effectively vaporisation (conduction source), but it could also be sublimation if it's from a solid form, like 99% crystalline yields or whatever. Yet the gas from high-temp dabbing could also be beyond vapour if you reach critical temps.. which looks to be ~610 C (1130 degrees F). I doubt anyone is dabbing like that! So dabbing is almost certainly inhaling entirely vapour, by strict definition:

Vaporisation is literally a material change from liquid to gas phase. Vapour is a gas phase, but by definition it means it is below critical temperature. This means you could change it back to liquid just by increasing the ambient pressure (by up to 16.4 atmospheres), without reducing the temperature.
So, there is a chance that there's someone out there going in stupid hot with the dabs who genuinely isn't "vaping".

But if you do it right, yes, I'd say that's 100% vaping.

Can y’all tell that I had a fucked-up upbringing? Three times a week, baby! At least.
So grateful that I made it out with my sanity.
Anyway, if ya ever need a faux biblical passage or full-on  hellfire+brimstone sermon, p_j is your man!

Really? Sublimation would be direct from solid to gaseous without the intervening liquid state....no matter how short. You sure that this can happen at high temp dabbing??

Just so Dab HAppy!

I am certain!...at least I think I am!

Now its not 100% sublimation, and probably more like 5-25% depending on your dab size/material and temp, but the exposed surface of your dab gases instantly upon direct contact with heat source.

with crystalline extract and the right conditions and temp, sure why couldn't it?

Given the general dynamic of vaping, it's unlikely you'd sublimate an entire sample, given the general size.
But it could be vaporisation, and also sublimation, for sure.

Sublimation isn't so fancy, I don't think much of it when I open the freezer...

Sorry for the poor labels, but it looks like its possible if you really try, like old mate customgrow420 on this CBD
