Decarb chart, very interesting

I've been searching for a long time for a chart about decarb time vs temp, where it covers the lower temps, like if using a sous vide. That has to be below water boiling temp so less than 212 F.

There is a current chart that appears over and over, BUT I always was bummed that they didn't run the time
access out further than an hour.

This chart gives a range of temps/times in comparison to 230 F. For example, 212 F would take 2.o times as long to decarb VS 230F.

It's not linear so sous vide temps would require much longer than at 230 F. No big deal as long as one
has an accurate guide like this.

I also want a guide for lower temps as I'm finding stovetop extraction with heavy cream works great. You get an infused heavy cream---great for hot chocolate or canna-creme brulee :)

I've only done the cream method with ABV and one batch of golden honey reclaim from a bubbler.
So I have not needed to decarb yet. In the future, when a normal supply is possible, then I'd love to try
extracting from virgin cannabis---instead of the leftover ABV .

So, how long would 230 be? I don't understand how the chart helps if I don't have a base time.

Had the same question while reading this. And why 230F? Here water is boiling at 212F.

230 F decarb time is generally accepted at 30-40 minutes.

I think 230 F was used as a base as it is low enough to save terps etc yet high enough
so as to decarb in a reasonable time.

So simmering at 212 F (boiling water) in a double boiler (container with cannabis sitting in the water)
would take 2X or 60-80 minutes.

Temps below 212 F then require much longer times to decarb.

While I don't doubt any charts, it's good to keep in mind decarbing happens over time, not all at once. And buds will naturally decarb over time on their own at room temperatures. You can eat a 6 month old bud and get high. Of course you can speed it up with heat.

Over the years I tried a number of different decarbing methods, and they all worked. If your using low heat decarb longer, and vise versa.

shredder,
Decarbing is a more exact science today than ever. If you are decarbing high CBD pot for medical use, the decarb takes much longer. 240F for 40 minutes will only convert about 25% of the CBDa to CBD.

And, since we are now aware of the incredible influence of the terps, you also have to consider that.

I really love sous vide. It is about the only way to maintain the entire terpene profile for the "Full Entourage" effect. Decarbing just about any other way is sure to loose the low end terps like the Beta Caryophyllene and Alpha Pinene.

Currently, I just have ABV/ not enough cannabis to do edibles from it so no decarb needed. In future, hopefully with bigger supply, I'll definitely try sous vide decarb.
I'm sous vide-ing some post chops now so checked my unit----197 F is max temp. So, it would take about 4X the time of 230 F or about 120 - 160 minutes.

Note that previously I used sous vide cooking to make some canna-creme brulee (made form super-golden hydratube reclaim where all vapor had been filtered thru hemp filter so no nasty ABV dust in the honey). The creme brulee was unbelievable and no grassy mj taste!!!

For decarb, I sous vide at 190F for 90 minutes.

For infusion, I use 170F - 180F for 4 hours. Sometimes more.

For ABV, I often decarb but the last few times I skipped the decarb and left it in the infusion for 6 hours instead of 4.

So nice. No smell, no muss, no fuss. I really like sous vide.

Here is a nice cannabis sous vide site...

I'd love to try virgin cannabis, infused in heavy cream at 170 F for 4 hours. That should keep max amount of the goodies and
yield some awesome canna-cream which I find really nice for real-world, real-quick use. Canna-cream makes eazy-peazy hot chocolate AND all that butterfat helps ingest the make amount too.

Note for infusing cannabis into oil or cream : I love T-Sacs !!!!!!!!! Hemp fiber tea filters, widely available on Amazon etc.
I find them 10X easier than fucking around with cheesecloth straining of wet cannabis. Bag it before infusing and a firm/thorough squeeze after---need to experiment with putting it in French press too??

you'll probably have better luck (and vastly better leverage) using a potato ricer, pop your hemp bag in there and squeeze like the dickens, should get most out.

One way to get every last drop of oil is to use hot water. You put your herb/oil in a bowl and cover it in hot water, not boiling but hot, then put the bowl in a freezer. The oil will coagulate on the top as the water cools. Then just use a slotted spoon to collect it and pat it dry on a paper towel.

Or, put your water mix in a sealed jar/container upside down while it cools. Then you can take the lid off and easily pour the water out. Easy peasy.

I always used to water wash but since I discovered some terps are water soluble, I felt I was tossing the baby out with the bath water.

Too bad, really. I always felt the water wash helped a lot on the taste. Still, I have tolerance issues and I need every terp working for me so I try to stick to anything that retains the Full Entourage.

What I use now is a press that fits in my 1 ton arbor press. When I make butter/oil/whatever and I need to strain, I use cheesecloth (usually) and press it in my press. I have a pan setup that presses the load between 2 plates and the butter/oil drains into the pan. I never realized just how much I was throwing away with hand squeezing.

However, there are arguments that say the harder you press, the more debris you add.

So hard to know unless you try everything. LOL

Not a great pic but another plate just like the bottom one goes on top of the load and then the pan collects. Crude, but it works...

A lot of people, me included just make rosin and use that for medibles, canncaps and whatnot. That way most of the terpenes remain in the mix. For me it's just easier. But if you want to extract from used rosin pucks or abv then an oil (or alcohol) extraction is a good option.

Is it just a temp probe or does is include a heating element?

If so it would just uptemp water but no fatty solution with parts of herbs. More a bain marie heater.

It's more like an aquarium heater with a built in pump to keep the water circulating but they are A LOT more powerful. By circulating the water in the pot they keep the temperature very uniform and Sous Vide are very accurate. There is a post with a video I saw (can't remember where), but the gentleman in it was using a Sous Vide by vacuum sealing his herb and also vacuum sealing a butter knife in a compartment of the same vacuum pack at the very bottom. The knife acted as a weight to keep the packet submerged in the water. Clever idea...

While I try and find that particular video, here is a web-page that has some great suggestions for using a Sous Vide to decarb.

https://skillet.lifehacker.com/how-to-sous-vide-your-own-medical-marijuana-edibles-1772309487

Here's a video where the guy uses the "Sous Vide" method to decarb without using a vacuum sealer. The only thing I would add to his instructions is to put a clean butter knife or spoon in the bottom of the bag to weigh it down.

Sousweed is the site you're talking about with the knife for weight. They have several good videos.

I have found a rare earth magnet works great and takes less room. A very small magnet holds the largest bag.

I also used a magnet with a 'binder clip' to hold bags down.

Now, I just use a rack that's designed for the purpose and, what a surprise, it works great. LOL

Sous Vide is the only way to decarb and infuse AFAIAC. It's is the only way I know to maintain the entire terpene profile and utilize the "Full Entourage".

Here's an interesting article for those who are curious:

I use some stainless steel nuts and bolts as weights for my sous vide bags. They also work well inside the bags
