Discontinued The Grasshopper

So far mine is working fine, but at first i was getting some hot back end issues from time to time. So I checked the connection between the body and the back end and something didn't look right.

I took a closer look at the top edge of the body and realized there was a piece of flash metal on the end. I ran a knife over it and the sliver came off. I took some sandpaper to the rest of the top of the body to smooth it over, and I haven't had any backend problems since then. I'm going to run the sand paper over the gold contacts and see if it gets even better. Though I don't know if it can get a lot better than it is doing now.

Massive pulls on 4.25 through glass are amazing and the abv comes out perfect. At 3 without any water, I get huge clouds for 4 or 5 pulls, tasty thick clouds.

So as of right now, I have no complaints other than the slight QA check that seemed to miss the bit of metal leftover from the lathe on the end of the body. When the hopper is working, it really does astound you every time you take a hit. :)

Ok my unit is not working the same i don't think. I'll find out next week when I'm in San Francisco again. I'm not a fan of the strain I currently have, but I am on temperature 5 again. This sucks.

@newVaper420 That blows. When I use 5 on mine, I can basically clear the bowl through my larger bong in one or 2 hits. I think if I was to push it to a 3rd pull I might get close to combustion. But I can't use 5 without water because it is too strong. I haven't gone past 4 without water.

this is sort of the definition of shit QA. I mean, really?? sigh

When you (eybody) "clears a bowl in one or two" what quantity herb are you loading?

I get the most consistent results when it's loose.
i grind in the bottom of one of those MedTainers (which gets pretty fine, but not sandy/dusty) I grind a few nugs at a time, and store in a DoobTube.

I then pretty much pour the herb from the Dtube right into the hopper. i tap a bit on the side to settle, (I DON'T pack it, even the gentle nudge i have to give it to help it in if i try to scoop off paper like you'd do results in a chamber that doesnt "dump out" easy enough at the end of my session, and i cringe at the though of tapping the hopper on anything to shake a wedged load free) but ultimately fill pretty much to the rim.

Is that too much? I am DEFINITELY not browning in one or even two hits. I'm not baby lunging, (got my 4 foot certification in the 90s) but it just keeps going.

I have a funnel from Delta3D that I use. I also use the scooper from them as well. Usually a scoop or two and then I pat it down into the chamber. I don't cram it in there, but I make sure that the space is well utilized.

I dial it to 4.5 set it in the piece and then turn it on. Once it hits blue, I start inhaling, this goes on for a good 5-7 seconds I would guess. Then I keep inhaling (but slightly harder) with it still in the piece for another 5-7 seconds. By this time the entire glass is filled up completely and I can't see through it at all. Then I pull the Hopper out and finish the pull. I can do that 3 times max. If I set it to 5 I can do it twice turning the abv a dark brown.

Yup. Perfect amount of resistance. And glass just makes it so much better.

Pretty much my style as well. I use the NewVape grinder and their PAX scoop. I like the fluffy fine grind and am often surprised how little is left when I tap it out. Not combusted or anything, it just dries out and settles.

Ok no more dark dark brown for the hopper. I tried sanding again briefly. Cleaning threads with iso. Etc. etc. nothing is returning it to its former power at 3.5. I am using it at 5 now.

And it’s still not dark and I don’t feel satisfied. Back to using cloud Evo and mighty. I may take it to Cali and give it a shot. But otherwise I’ll do another RMA when I come back.

Have you tried a different battery? These are as variable as the Hopper itself, lol.

Ok. Damn. Ok. Sooo, how common is “can’t turn it off”? 6,8 clicks in a row. On. Onnnnn.

Unscrewed to off it. Replaced, and nothing. No power, no led. I swapped batteries, and same deal.

twisted the nipple a little bit ( is this thing supposed to click? Damn it if my nubbin doesn’t seem like the culprit whenever I have issue) and got juice, so I popped last battery back in, and it worked, as long as I “worked the balls” so to speak. More and more if I’m not tweaking on that little guy, I’m done.

This forum is like watching the video in “the ring” I swear to god, once you’ve seen it your cursed-

Well remember that this is kind of an echo chamber in the sense that we are all coming here looking for answers to a problem we are all having. There may be tons of users out there that have no reason to check this forum because everything is going swimingly for them.

But there are a lot of issues and I think there is still some work for them to have to do to get this right. But I think the V5 is pretty close to it.

@newVaper420 you don't think that they sent you one so fast that it was still a v4 body do you? Because the behavior you are describing is exactly what happened to my original body. Just slowly faded until it wasn't doing anything anymore. I wonder if you got sent a v4 by accident. I can say that my v5 experience seems to be outside the norm now. But I had to wait nearly 3 weeks for them to send that to me after I told them I wanted a v5 and don't bother sending me anything until you get them.

Right now I can only hit it at 5 if I have glass for it to go through first. I can go up to like 4.25 without glass, but that's about it. I can go through an entire bowl at 3 and it be perfect golden brown all the way through and me on my way to the moon.

It's possible. Who knows. All I know is now I am at temperature 5 when I used to be able to be good at 3.5 max 4.

I'm gonna take it to San Francisco on Sunday and see what happens. I also think I'm bringing the Mighty as well. LOL

Edit: Also - as a note. When I first got it.... When screwing on the back end, the red light would flicker. Now, it doesn't. Also, when heating, it would be much faster, now it takes a while. Second click, used to be immediate. Now, it takes a bit of time

This morning I used temperature 5, and slowed my draw and was able to get some thick hydratubes. But seriously disappointed.

as far as backend goes, what's the thought there? more and more people seem to feel everything has to do with the body. I know everything is the circuit, or however i mean it (no wires) but last night I continued to have issues, either with no power on, or no power off. clickclickclick ugh.
can that be anything but the backend? who knows?

Well, my guess is it was completing the circuit and turning on somehow before I even clicked, due to a surge of power from the connection to the battery, or what not. Now, it never happens. Not exactly sure why.

I'm thinking my issue was a backend problem but it could have been an oven? I tried new batteries so it's not a battery issue. I get red and blue lights for 7 seconds then a blue light then red and blue again for 20 and then blue and the 20 seconds and blue and off ... So lol:hmm: But I do know if have a newest version SS comming from Canada any day now.

How I miss my hopper :luv:

The same thing is happening with mine now. It either won't turn on or it won't turn off if it somehow turns on. If I unscrew the backend a bit, sometimes it will work normally. I've also had an issue where it lights up red for a couple seconds without touching it while it is off.

@SmokeyTheBeard you have the newest "v5" body?

Raise of hands ✋ who has a newest version with the new backend which I'm assuming hasn't changed and a newest version body? @mario had 3 versions of this "new body" I believe the one I receive will have a new body but do we have a date when the implementation was made ?

Issues primarily ti versions or SS or both?

I don't believe so. My SS Grasshopper was in RMA service from December 2017 to May 2018. It still wasn't working like it originally did when I got it back but I was holding off as long as I could to send it back in since it'll probably be gone for another 6 months or so. I'll probably send it back in again for service soon since it no longer works at all really.

I haven't had 3 version of the "new" v5 body. I had 3 versions of the old body before they told me to wait a tick until the v5 had come out. I have had only the single v5 body and I have had no problems with it thus far. Just for clarities sake. My "new" body (the v5) is working very well for me and I have been using it exclusively since I got it in the mail. I've been really pushing it to see if I can make it fail again, because if I don't and baby it, I'll never trust it anyways.

The issues that @newVaper420 is talking about sound a lot like the issues I had with my "old" (v4?) bodies. But doesn't seem anything like I've experienced with my "new" body.

Anyone else have a v5 that they got in say the last 3 weeks? That was when I got mine after being told to wait until they were ready to be sent out.

No idea. I know they shipped my body out Sept 21st. Was supposed to be a v5 I think

Another thing I noticed. You could really hear the ticking when I first got it. Now it’s silent.

I’m actually beginning to think my unit is working properly now, and that before it was running way to hot and putting me on the precipice of combustion. Whereas this I’m on level 5 and am ripping the shit hard.

I believe it’s max temperature is supposed to be 410 and I can produce the same color abv as I can from the mighty at 410.

I’m not saying I like it. Just my theory.

Edit: I have a new technique. Draw slow. Temp 5. I can get it real dark. As long as I can get this performance consistently I’ll be happy. I’m just worried it’s gonna get worse and worse.

Yeah I wish someone knew how to open the backend I bet if we could see inside we could figure out what's going on tolerance changing with the clicking and taking on and off the back? Feels like I've tried fidgeting with it all i can

Indeed. Lifetime warranty's a hell of a drug. No one wants to break in to discover what would be covered for free, as opposed to EVERY other vape thats been endlessly torn down.

Have you tried your (new) v5 body with all your backends and does it work the same with all of them?
