Discontinued Healthy Rips FIERCE

Vaporific

All who wander are not lost...
I think the fact that HR promptly and courteously responds to their own support email and herein pretty much sums it up - great customer service and they make great products. It's wonderful they're part of the online community. Less than 1% is fantastic and a testament to their engineering and quality control.

@Azn2101 & @Cosmic Dude Totally cool and I have no gripes or argumentative points. All is good. May the buzz be with you. And everyone...:peace::leaf:

Hope everyone, well mostly everyone, is enjoying their new Fierce!

My Fierce died today at 12:29pm PST.

I pulled it off the charger on a full battery (had been there since the night before) and proceeded to power it on to reach the set temperature and when It reached said temp. (180°F) and I began inhaling only to feel that it was cooling like I was trying to chase a cloud or something. As I took it away from my face I noticed the unit wasn't powered on. After reading all the other false flags and trying the answers to those (removal of the battery for 30 seconds or more, charging in a warm envoirnment) I found nothing was helping. Before removing the battery for diagnostics the coin-screw was untouched because BornAgainSteama stated a lot of that manufacturer smell comes from that area. It hasn't been dropped or even let outside the house. No response to plugging back in to the charger either...

Am I the first Broken Unit?
You may be the first, but you are not alone. My Fierce just turned into a brick this morning. I am as displeased now as I was when I heard about the repeated production delays. I got a note from HR customer service very promptly in reply to my freaked out missive. I sent it back this afternoon. So sad this is my first post here on FC and it has to be this bad news.

Hmm, interesting. @OF makes very good points though (in much more sofisticated terms than i'll put them in lol). All v1.0's have a much higher chance of running into problems for obvious reasons and the fact that there has been so much hype and only 3 known faulty units means Healthy Rips are on top of their goals:
-Staying Dynamic and Innovative instead of sitting back and admiring their work
-Upfront and responsive to the public communities & forums
-Genuine, and I mean no doubt, Genuinely Amazing CS
-Maybe the most important, Their devices rate very high in terms of vapor production and great flavor (even if it dissipates a bit quickly in the F2)

I think anyone who rode the Tera roller coaster or is still on the Grasshopper train will understand the knotting of your stomach at the sight of the Fierce, a unit that had a longer "Testing Phase" than some companies take to design, tweak, test, manufacture, and market their products, and was supposed to match the Mighty in "Ease of use, Portability, Durability, and Vapor Production" turn into a black brick brings back all the memories of the waiting turned excitement, turned depression that then repeated itself until I was no longer "excited" to see the tracking # that meant i'd be seeing it soon (my hopler is in for the its 4th trip). Im not saying because my Fierce Bricked that their a Bad, Bad company or that they're "A main stream off brand" as said because they sold the F2 design to the manufacturer, infact they have just as much potential if not more than the 2 or 3 War chest companies, I just don't want to wait for them to iron out all the details and specifications to as close to perfection that the technologies will get them (again I have no doubt about their ambition to grow in the industry side and community angle.)

Similar to @BornAgainSteama, I might start selling off all my "unique situation" vapes or ones that dont make the cut for any form of effecient usage because if HR's having trouble meeting the standards that I WANT in a vaporizer than it'll be extremely difficult for the other Top tier companies to meet them. This logic would apply vice verse to the Mighty if the Fury/F2 & Fierce had been made years before, I just had my standards set high already because I own a lot of the vaporizers that experienced & knowledgeable people commonly compared the Fierce to (not by name but it was no secret they were aiming to knock off S&B's Mighty at the #1 spot and bypass the Airizer co. altogether cause if its comparable to the Mighty the only vape in their arsenal that comes close is the Solo/2)

Im all for the little guy, the underdog (not the log but im sure its good too) and I think they make better work because they're too small to make mistakes and if I decide to keep the Fierce than it will be the last vape bought from a Company because after the decision one way or the other i'll be going through Mr. Morrison. I wish you all the best of luck with your Fierces and wish me luck too, if I decide to keep it , but, Luck me up anyways ;)

For The Record!: HR's Fierce is a GREAT PRODUCT, it has amazing flavor, very efficient with material, fits like a glove in your hand, Hybrid heating without toasting the oven, and cool vapor from both stock mouthpieces. My concern lies with the CHANCES of a reoccuring problem that would/could require constant upkeep, constant monitoring, having to be very precise about the tempature ect. or risk shitdown and a factory vacation for that unit, not the functionality of the Fierce itself.

Sorry for the long post but I felt the need to be clear.

Yep, exactly what happened with me. @HealthyRips.com was super chill about it though, I shipped mine back yesterday and have high hopes for my return unit.

I'm doing some real soul searching and honestly asking myself if I can do another Tera-like situation. I've posted enough extensive opinions and personal feelings so i'll just say the thing I like the most about the Fierce is actually the dosing capsules system; S&B's capsules are just as good but function differently and I prefer the Fierce caps in the Fierce more than I enjoy S&B caps in a Mighty. Yes S&B are pretty much universal and fit in so many brands but I like that the fierce allows for room for the capsule to lift up and it's kind of like a draw speed gauge based off sound and no matter how hard you pull thru the native mp the capsule sucks up against the screen perfectly so all the air still passes thru the capsule. I did decide to start going through my rafters and pulling out boxes from when we moved. Anyone need Solo stems lol

It seems kinda dramatic to use the worst (and most costly) launch ever in the history of vapes as a barometer for how this product launch will go. HR is a completely different company than Boundless and there is just no reason to believe there are any widespread problems with the Fierce.

My Fierce has about 10g through it with no hiccups so far.

I have been vaping with the Fierce for a few days now.
The vapor production is great!
This is a vaporizer that feels right for those who wish a more solid feel in the hand, and who want to spend a long day (and evening) away from home with vaping being the center of activities.
The changeable battery makes it easy to "keep on vaping".
The unit works as flawlessly as the predecessor the Fury 2, but with juice to spare.
The convection flavor is wonderful.
My Fierce has about 10g through it with no hiccups so far.
Mine has gone through more than that, also without any issue.
If you like a solid feel, the Fierce won't let you down.

Just to be clear, it is a famous myth that holding your breath after an inhale makes the hit more effective. In fact, actual research shows that holding your breath adds nothing - except - that the temporary oxygen deprivation affects your brain. So, due to the effect of the oxygen deprivation, stoners in earlier days assumed that holding your breath was causing more of the herb to enter the bloodstream, but research says no it does not.
Indeed, I have found one or two studies have found that THC uptake was not significantly impacted by breath hold duration but here is one that contradicts this....I don't think any of these studies are conclusive and we need real, reproduced research, IMO.

https://www.researchgate.net/public...f_varying_puff_volume_and_breathhold_duration

Two studies were conducted to quantify biological and behavioral effects resulting from exposure to controlled doses of marijuana smoke. In one study, puff volume (30, 60 and 90 ml) and in a second study, breathhold duration (0, 10 and 20 sec) were systematically varied while holding constant other smoking topography parameters (number of puffs = 10, interpuff interval = 60 sec and inhalation volume = 25% of vital capacity). Each study also varied levels of delta 9-tetrahydro-cannabinol marijuana cigarette content (1.75% and 3.55%). Regular marijuana users served as subjects (n = 7 in each experiment). Subjects smoked 10 puffs in each of six sessions; a seventh, nonsmoking session (all measures recorded at the same times as in active smoking sessions) served as a control. Variations in puff volume produced significant dose-related changes in postsmoking plasma delta 9-tetrahydro-cannabinol levels, carbon monoxide boost and subjective effects (e.g., "high"). In contrast, breathholding for 10 or 20 sec versus 0 sec increased plasma delta 9-tetrahydro-cannabinol levels but not CO boost or subjective effects. Task performance measures were not reliably influenced by marijuana smoke exposure within the dosing ranges examined. These findings confirm the utility of the controlled smoking technology, support the notion that cumulative puff volume systematically influences biological exposure and subjective effects, but cast doubt on the common belief that prolonged breathholding of marijuana smoke enhances classical subjective effects associated with its reinforcing value in humans.

If you read the message above that I stated the reason why, it has nothing to do with the actual unit itself just the situation that it put me in. I think its childish to say "Well did have to go through the Tera and Hopper situation? Cause I did and yada yada". I wanted to make it was as clear as possible that that HR's 1% is because their business model is a good one that has an over all rating of over 4.5+ of 5 stars. They've been kind even in my freak out moment and in CS Emails and if you felt I was coming down on HR im sorry, that was not and is not my intention. I added the ending after everything was said and done to keep it fresh on your mind cause again I made a lot of opinionated statments that have nothing to do ,on a factual basis, with HR as a company, just my personal experience with the Fierce, and The situation it put me in, nothing to do with the HR. Yes, I understand I took this risk knowing that the sitation could arise but sometimes our basic human instinct takes over "I like vaporizers, i liked the F2, why wouldn't I like the Fierce if it is just a 33& larger chamber with Upgraded specs, HELL YA im gonna like it!" But just as another person parted with his because of the smell, it had nothing to do with the unit, it just didnt stop smelling. Nothing to do with preformance. As simalir in my case, I personally, Do Not want the risk of playing hot potato with another $200+ unit back in repeatedly. Its the Holliday season and most people are strapped for cash so the "Soul Searching" may not have to do with "will I keep the fierce because of its power amung other vaporizers in my collection" but rather "Damn Im low on cash and this might be a good way to come up with some money that will inevitably be used for Christmas"

All I can say at this point is i'm happy this happened cause it gave me the push needed to start parting with old/outdated units and stick to a few great ones.

When I owned the Fury 2 I used the bubbler once and the bent glass piece almost every time.

The last few days I have used the Fierce bubbler nearly every time and the bent glass piece just a few.

The bubbler on the Fury 2 was cute just not for me.
On the Fierce it works well and the mouth feel (lips) is better for me than the other options (both plastic and glass). The Bubbler for the Fierce is nice, don't usually like these types of things other than as a novelty. This one I will use.
There is nothing wrong with the Fierce's bent glass, functions fine. The lip feel isn't as nice for me because of the size of the tube. I like bent glass tubes and use them with all of my other convection devices. I will be seeking, in the future, a bent glass piece for this that tapers down to a smaller diameter at the mouth.

I think the 18mm Fatter Dynavap MP would fit over it but It might not feel right.

Edit: the Silicone add-on piece for like $2.

My first 2 times using the Fierce bubbler for me was a disaster. I really do like using the bubbler and it really makes the vapor much more comfortable than any of my other vapes.

The first time I tried the bubbler I was already pretty medicated (my first mistake) I burned the heck out of my finger trying to unload it. Ouch!!

The 2nd time I waited until it was cool (yes I learn from my mistakes) but I ended up spilling bubbler water all over my shirt and lap after 3 loads. Let's just say that the Bubbler water smelled pretty bad. I have had no mishaps since then and last night my mistakes didn’t get the better of me.

What is the best way to clean the Fierce bubbler?

At this point, I am very happy with my Fierce.

You can use it with a drop of rezblock, or cranberry extract to make cleaning easier, read about the pros and cons of this at http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/rezblock-cranberry-extract.8060/
I clean this bubbler with 91% Iso..... with severe shaking and agitation....
followed by a hot water/dish soap shaking, then a good hot water rinse.
I follow that routine up with a Shopvac placed at each end as I pulse my hand over the other opening to get all the moisture out....
The bubbler should be squeaky clean after that, and ready for more action.

Ok silly thing I did.

Instead of filling the glass stem with herb I filled the capsule. Then I just dropped the bubbler down on top of it. So it rests on top of the capsule not in the oven. Still got lots of vapor.
I don't see why this is particularly silly, you are still drawing down through the same vapour pathway. I have been considering doing the same thing with bent glass to get the bigger bowl size if I wanna get hiiiiiiiigh.

OK, now that is what I was waiting to hear.

I don't like filling glass tubes. I like to toss a bud or some chucks into the metal heating chamber and snap the mouthpiece on.

So, I can do that with the Fierce glass mouthpiece?

OMG, you are a genius I just tried that with the bubbler and it works so well. I can just prefill 5 capsules and I'm good for the night to just Netflix and chill. Thank you for the pro tip.

@HealthyRips.com after the initial battery charging is it bad for the battery if you stop charging the Fierce before it has fully charged?
Supposedly its worse for lipo batteries to fully charge them and better for them if you stop charging just before its fully charged. Though I doubt anyone will ever notice a long term difference between the two methods..

@HealthyRips.com after the initial battery charging is it bad for the battery if you stop charging the Fierce before it has fully charged?

I'm not HR (obviously?) but I can answer that. Not only is it not 'bad' for the battery, doing so will actually INCREASE BATTERY LIFE! Seriously. A reduction of 10% for each cycle (stopping at 4.1 not 4.2 Volts) will DOUBLE the useful 'cycle life' from a typical 300 cycles to 600. Drop it another 10% and it doubles again, to 1200 cycles. Check out this link, especially around table 4:
https://batteryuniversity.com/index.php/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

There are similar advantages to 'recharging early' not discharging completely, but not as profound. Simply charging to 100% and storing it will damage the battery over time (especially at elevated temperatures) which is why makers store and ship at about 3/4 charge (so the end user gets full capacity and lifespan).

Please understand that 'everybody' designs their gear to charge as much as possible without killing the battery too fast. All the commercial charge control ICs use this value. The military, however, understands this issue and often specifies 3.95 Volt termination. They know this means say a radio will need recharging a bit more often, but they won't have to worry as much about replacement in the field. I searched for such charge controllers with no luck. The ones I could find were quite expensive ('mil spec' and small volume), only in 'surface mount' and had large minimum buys (like 100 pieces at a bit over ten bucks per, not the under a dollar for commercial units in singles).

I eventually designed my own controller to recharge Solos for that reason.

Not to worry, not only not hurting but helping. Every time you stop early you get at least one more 'free cycle' before replacement.

Yes, you can.... remembering that this is a convection unit, and the more exposed surface material, rthe better for thick rich hits. Of coarse, a mildly coarse ground seemed to help me as opposed to a fine, fine grind.
Loving the potential here....
The unit is a great unit for medicating to a level appropriate for almost anyone.

@HealthyRips.com after the initial battery charging is it bad for the battery if you stop charging the Fierce before it has fully charged?

Also, does it matter how you load the dossing capsules? Can you put them in with the top side down?
Hi! Thank you for the questions! These batteries run most efficiently between 20% and 80%. If you were religious about keeping your battery within that range - it would extend the life of the battery. It is a good practice to charge your FIERCE once it hits 1 bar - that is about 20% battery life remaining. That does not mean you cannot charge your unit to 100% and then completely drain it - the battery just will last longer if you keep it between the range above. E.g., I have an iPhone 6 and I never let it go completely dead and I never charge it overnight. It is 3 years old and the battery is still practically as good as new. So, to answer your question directly - no it is not bad for the battery to stop charging your FIERCE (or FURY 2 if you have one) before it is fully charged. Matter of fact - it is actually good for it. Here is the list of battery protections that are built into all of our devices: Low voltage protection, Over voltage protection, Over current protection, Short circuit protection, Open circuit protection, Overheat protection, Reset protection, Lithium Polymer battery overcharge & over-discharge protection.

The dosing capsules can be loaded either direction - that would be a personal preference.

Have a great weekend everyone!
