Hex-Nail (HN-01) - RIP

Time for a DM @Hollabackatcha you gotta do this! I had no idea anyone was that close on a DIY build, that’s very exciting! Please please keep the sad people like me in your thoughts, I don’t have a lot going on, obviously since I habitually check this extinct thread. Can the intrepid members of FC make their own super kick-ass controllers without a hot glue gun and doll furniture? Tune in tomorrow for more “HexNail Hospital”! :D
As soon as i get the ISO I will start messing around with the build to get a clean working unit.

If anyone has cracked open their HN-01 I would appreciate any pictures as to get a better idea of the variances in parts between different rounds of units, since continuity was not HN's strong suit. Hey me in DM with Pictures if you got them.

Oh hell yeah @Hollabackatcha! If you can DIY a stable and fully funtional HN-01 I'd be all over that. I'd love to make one.

The only things I need are a parts list, basic assembly instructions, and the knowledge that there's a bug-fixed build of the firmware that functions as it was always intended to and won't brick over time. I know the first two won't be too hard, but I don't know if we ever saw a stable firmware release for the HN-01.

It will take some time but I will tinker with this in my HN-01 test bench set up until I can get something stable going. I wouldn't hold my breath because it could take a little bit. I will keep you folks posted as I trudge through it.

I just bought an HN-01 from a user in this thread and so far I'm very satisfied with the results. I got my Hex-Nail and set it up first try with no problems by connecting it to my WiFi and then using the browser interface on a windows PC with Chrome which also gave no issue. I was set up in less than 5 mins and dabbing in less than 15. I have been using the HN-01 only for a few days now and I turn it off once or twice a day if I know I won't use it for more than 2 hours for example or over night.

It takes about a full minute for my device to boot. Only one time in the last few days did I experience the "unable to connect" message that looks like a chrome browser during the boot cycle. Then within a few seconds of that screen my new HN-01 booted up and worked seemingly flawlessly.

This is my first ever enail and I have nothing to compare it to other than a torch on a quartz banger. So I'm very satisfied with its aesthetics and overall performance thus far by comparison.

I am using a 35mm Galaxy Coil and 35mm Galaxy Quartz Banger on the 30mm Standard Heavy setting with a quartz insert. I am setting my temps between 600 and 675 and let it sit for a few mins to allow the insert to soak up the heat. I do not use Glob Mode if I'm preset at 675. My glob mode is currently +30*/20s I use it when preset at 640* or lower

I do experience fluctuating temps on screen within +/- 30* (usually hotter) and my IR gun is reading close to what the HN says within 10*.

I used cleaning mode three times and twice successfully. First time was under powered @800*F for 5 min. For the second time I tried to run 1200*F for 20 min but the Hex-Nail couldn't get past 1070ish. On my second cleaning cycle I set the temp to 1100*F for 20 min and still was unable to break 1100* and hung around 1050*. Both times the cleaning mode really made the banger and insert look like new. No clouding. I love that.

I read this entire 91 page forum before signing up to comment. It took me about 2 weeks on and off and I have formed several opinions about Hex-Nail and especially on Ava and how he lied to everyone and stole their money. I can summarise my opinion in a few words. No one truly cared that he had health problems in life. His personal problems were bullshit excuses that had nothing to do with the money that customers spent on their units and the way he strung everyone along about the software and consistently pushed back release dates for hardware is also horse shit. He is bad for that. He would say one thing and then another that was contradicting the first but the only real truth about anything that he said was that they were all lies. I can't even believe they started a Round 3 during all the turmoil of Round 2. Much more than just this i take issues with but I digress.

It's never a happy time when some one has to fail at something the way Ava and Liz did and my condolences go to them despite the fact they are the creators of their own demise. They should have ironed out all the problems with Skynet before even thinking about Red Queen hardware. DabOS2 should have been finalized before RQ was even mentioned.

The fact the company is dead is actually a good thing in my opinion because now dedicated supporters like @Hollabackatcha and other members in this community with a vested interest may have the ability to Make Hex-Nail Great Again!

At this time I am happy I purchased my HN-01 and look forward to a good modding community rising up as a result of everyone past and present officially associated with the project having essentially given up.

I find that open source communities generally have better firmware and community support anyway. Like with Arctic Fox for vape mods or the CFW for PSPs and PS Vitas or RockBox for mp3 players to name a few.

The people always give the people what they want and I believe it's just a matter of time now before these units get the real community driven software updates that match and exceed the promises that Hex-Nail initially offered.

Looking forward to the future of Hex-Nail DIY community.

Just wanted to show everyone that the wheels are in motion.

I'll post the digital HN-02 diagram when it's all done, and when I finish the DIY I'm going to make a new thread. FCENail? FuckCombustion Community ENail - Anyone have any good ideas for names?

^^^How about "Talisman" as a new name for the Hex

Talismans' purportedly protect you from bad "Hexes"...

Ill cast my vote for this. Im really excited about this. I think once it gets off the ground, its going to take off like crazy.

The HN was a great unit. The people behind it, not so much. I cant say much about Liz but I have zero use for Ava and her lying ass.

I decided to jump-start a thread for this project; we should keep community-project-related discussion outside of this thread, to ensure that this thread can still be useful for owners of official units. Here is the thread:

@Hogni @Shrike I haven't posted your name ideas in that thread; I suggest doing so :D

On Topic -

Here is a wiring diagram for the HN-02:

I'm referring to this as a wiring diagram because the software I used is intended for other uses. You absolutely should NOT assume that this is a PCB or a Schematic. This is simply the outlines of the individual parts and a visual display of where things are meant to be connected.

This is an online website for collaborative creation and discussion of integrated circuitry design and derivative products. The link I posted will allow you to make your own copy, so that you can rearrange, recolor, or edit in any other way to make it easier for you to work with. I didn't spend too much time making this look pretty. If someone with more experience wants to make a proper diagram and/or schematic, please post your work here for us to use :)

I'm going to post a new diagram in the other thread once I've completed one for the hardware I am using.

Also, for anyone using the link above, you may want to open the Design Manager > Nets view, which will show you the full path of wires and highlight the holes where they are meant to contact. Here is an example (you'll see the lines and holes which are white instead of red):

Will we also see a wiring diagram and a part list for the HN-01 anytime?
I hope so, I never was very attracted by the "I"-thingy concept of the HN-02.

I don't have an HN-01 so I definitely won't be able to make that, but if someone sends me a sketched diagram I can make a digital version. You can see what I mean by a sketched diagram a few posts back.

If anyone in Chicago wants to butcher their HN-01 let me know :p

I know it has been written in this thread before, but it's a BIG thread... Anyone have a list of the HN-01 internals? I have a few different ras pi's, so I might actually be able to test out a DIY with that hardware. I'll post any results in the new thread, but figured I'd ask about the HN-01 here. Any of the following will be useful:

List of components

Wiring Diagram (I don't expect this from anyone since it would require disassembly most likely)

Pictures of the wiring

Image of the SD card (please don't post it publicly...)

It definitely is possible that we can get the community project going for the HN-01 too, I just mean to imply that with my current resources I won't be able to get that going myself. Having an HN-01 to play with would be helpful, but it definitely is not necessary if the above information is supplied.

@Hollabackatcha Any chance you have any of this stuff on hand already?

None i am flying blind on this adventure.

I would also like to get as many internal pics of the HN-01 if possible.

I have a workshop of Pi breakouts, Touchscreens and Pis(3 B,3 B+, Zero W) that i am working with to make something work.

If someone has a bricked HN-01 that they would offer up for careful dismantling and documenting, hit me with a DM. I would obviously try and rebuild the unit sans hot glue to return to you once finished.

So basically you're offering to potentially fix a dead unit and return it in better state than when you got it... free of charge.

Gee, you drive a hard bargain there.
