Canada to legalize in Spring 2017!

CMA abandons doctors with its position on pot

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) recently announced that it supports the elimination of the current medical cannabis system once federal legalization is implemented in October. The rationale is “the lack of evidence, the lack of scientific studies showing it actually works, the lack of knowledge around dosing and interactions with other medications.”

The CMA’s reservation with cannabis as a safe and effective therapeutic option mirrors concerns within the medical community. Cannabis is known to be cognitively impairing, and scientific research on its chronic use is limited. It is also well established that cannabis may have deleterious effects in the neurologic development of the central nervous system, which does not fully mature until 25 years of age.

This uncertainty, combined with an aggressive timeline for legalized consumption, has handcuffed health care providers, who possess varying degrees of comfort with prescribing medicinal marijuana.

However, with its position, the CMA has not only demonstrated its lack of willingness to learn about this growing field, it has abandoned physicians who will invariably field more inquiries about cannabis from patients. This is problematic given the growing scope of cannabis as a therapeutic option in conditions including epilepsy and spasticity.

In the context of a national opioid crisis, cannabis is growing as an alternative for chronic pain patients, and is currently recommended as a third-line medication according to the national pain guidelines.

Even more concerning is the emerging pattern among medical associations to be slow to evolve with the changing times. For example, many were initially resistant to embrace social media and online dialogue, which allowed for the unfortunate proliferation of medical misinformation. Nowhere is this more exemplified than with the antivaccine movement, which was given space to grow due to the void in evidence-based contributions from the scientific community.

This lack of checks-and-balances is poised to repeat itself as a result of the reticence from Canada’s largest physician body. By removing itself from the conversation, physicians under the guidance of the CMA run the risk of letting the cannabis narrative be controlled by actors looking to maximize profit ahead of patient benefit.

The CMA recently came under fire for its sale of one of its crown-jewel assets, MD Management, to the tune of $2.5 billion. CMA members, who do not collect any of the proceeds, criticized the organization for not consulting them before closing the deal. This eye-watering windfall is expected to further the institution’s strategic vision, which includes improving physician wellness. This is an important issue, and the CMA should use a portion of the MD Management revenue to create a free, continuing medical education program for physicians to learn about evidence-based research for new interventions including cannabis.

The Cannabis Act will represent the Trudeau government’s signature legislative victory during its first term, despite expressed concerns from the medical community.

Ultimately, physicians need to be prepared for the new reality of legalization, and the CMA would be wise to support its colleagues to tackle this issue head-on.

Almost there...
And so begins part 1 of the "We legalized Pot" TV show...

https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/con...pproved-for-roadside-drug-detection-1.4047206

So they legalized the first road testing saliva device.
It appears that the powers that be, once again have total understanding of the device to be used in Canada.
So far the issues are:
1- It does not work in cold weather! Did the government forget where we live??? LMAO!!!
2- Most of the time it gives a false/positive or false/negative readings.

So even though it does not work, let's use it anyway!
That's forward thinking!

I would imagine with a good lawyer you would be able to fight that saliva test. I bet many people will contest their results. It’s too bad that it will cost citizens so much money to go to court. Many people won’t have the funds to contest their results.

You have a pretty good system it sounds like with your medical cannabis right now. I was happy with our medical cannabis law here in WA state before we went legal. Everything costs way more money now, especially edibles. We do have wonderful selections.

I miss the medical cannabis farmers markets on Saturdays where we could buy top shelf ounces for $100. Now most top shelf is double that or more. Top shelf 1/8 are $30-45. Most top shelf grams are $10 sometimes a little less and sometimes it’s $12. 10 pieces of medical candy is usually $30 for 100mg. You can hit sales occasionally. The edible prices have also doubled.

It’s hard to get a medical cannabis card. Not many doctors or health professionals are participating in cannabis recommendations.

Remember, Canada is doing this so they can make money off of taxes not out of the goodness of their hearts.

Doug Ford has agreed to allow private retailers to sell pot once legalized if they apply for a permit. Will not be sold at only government stores.

So long as Canada Post keeps shipping parcels, I am pretty sure we will not be buying any bud from the government! I may have to go in one day just to see what it is like though.
I am certain they will not be like stores in Cali...
Couldn't agree more. Love that they ship top shelf stuff across the country to my door in 2 days. It's absolutely amazing.

The court system is going to be JAMMED UP for decades

Trudeau’s reasoning for legalization was to keep the herb out of the hands of minors and to have the profits benefit the country and not criminal elements.

...instead of fines for possession there will be greater enforcement on dui's... how has legalization made things better? as i see it they are more concerned on how to criminalize users more than what it was before legalization... at least you had to possess more than a oz to make it worth anyone while to stop you (which is no different than the proposed law under legalization- 30g)

...we had to legalize weed in canada to stop those people from driving high... because you know... every car accident involves stoners

A DUI is very expensive for those that recieve them. I know that it’s a money maker for our state with all the fines and such. For those that are lower income they end up with a harder sentence because they can’t afford a good attorney. So the law is unequal depending on your income.

I’m really against driving under the influence of alcohol. Cannabis is a different story depending on if you are a regular user or not.

actually you have that wrong its to benefit a ll his corp LP buddies those are the only ones that are going to benefit. The criminal elements are a bunch of nonsense, the growers are mostly mom and pop operations not criminal elements from other countries.

Looks like the medical users will have 5 years if review after legalization.

Medical marijuana system will continue after legalization, says Health Canada
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/health-canada-medical-marijuana-continue-1.4820377
this part =

"This additional flexibility will support pre-clinical and clinical research on the use of cannabis and cannabinoids for medical purposes. Such research could lead to new drug submissions of cannabis-based products for market authorization as drugs."

Health Canada will also work to evaluate the drug review and approval process for health products containing cannabis "so Canadians in need have better access to an array of medicinal options.‎"

those statements are scary and will push the focus from real plant to man made drug... next UP- botanical drug substances

100%!!
I can see the big pharma companies pushing synthetic THC as the safest alternative in the future and the fed backing them as always...
They have some already that make most people very sick...

Only way drs will support cannabis is if it is synthetic and easy doses.
Very sad state of affairs.

Sorry but you are wrong there.
In Canada courses are offered for Drs to take to further their education.
Problem is, no one of them care enough...
