The Nomad From Morwood

Absolutely man, I couldn't agree more.

I've been throwing ideas at him left and centre. He's been coming back with mockups and questions about style, themes, elements.

My first mockup to Dan:
pasted_Image.png

After discussing the theme with Dan I mocked this up:

Dan came back with some questions on art style. He sent over a link to his Pinterest list of ideas for my concept.

I settled on the firewatch art style:

Dan came back with some colour themes and I selected the below:

painttest2.jpg

There has been a lot of discussion of the details for the elements like the birds and the sun as well as an engraving on the back of the switch plate.

I have enjoyed the Nomad processes no end and the journey really is half the fun. Dan takes it one step at a time and walks you through it, you get to be a part of the creative process and I'm sure it is going to endear me to this vape for the rest of my life. I'll be leaving this vape to someone in my will. Don't expect to see it in the classifieds. :goon:

What wood is that on the collar in the last pic?

Fantastic sleeve you got there. I have to admit, I don’t really like the sleeve in general, at all, for this vape and think it only detracts from the beauty of the rest of the vape...but I’ve always loved the art style and colors in that firewatch pic and that sleeve is slick.

Pretty awesome vape. Brings me a little to pullin the trigger.

This is very much a personal device, if you have the cash and love to vape it's well worth it in my view.

What wood is that on the collar in the last pic?

Cocobolo I believe.

Thank you bud, I felt the same about covering up the wood. It seemed a shame and I had designs on a sheath with cut outs exposing area's of the wood but I was concerned it would feel weird in the hand.

In the end some one posted about how the sleeve is like clothing for the vape and only they got to see their vape naked. That not only made me laugh it also sorta made sense to me. So I went with the above design.

@Xelatsok , Whoa! That acrylic stem is awesome! I wonder... with the Stainless steel chamber, do you experience any added conduction heating vs. the glass chamber?
I am not sure. I've learned that metal bowls are better on taste comparing to glass. I've noticed that Ed's TnT wooden stem with metal bowl lowers the effective load temp 10C likewise. And I used this with my Air which lowest temp 180C is too high for most tobaccos. With Nomad, metal stem surely works as heatsink for its load, temp stabilizer and protection of overheating/charring. My first attempt has the walls excessively thick and too much mass which eats the batteries. Nevertheless, as I bent mouthpieces for better ergonomic, I am pretty happy with it already and Nomad becomes my daily driver.

I'm really enjoying the double-screens method. It's much simpler than you imagine. It's exactly the same as your average stem-based vape, excepted you pop an extra "cap" in and out to compact and tamp the load in one go.

With other vapes I always need one extra tamping step, be it with my finger tip in the Milaana or Zion, or with that special metal tamping tool found with most Chinese conduction vapes. Conduction or convection, I like to tamp and make a puck with the load.

So for me this extra step was just replaced by the second screen insertion step. The first screen stays in place inside the stem, exactly like with my other vapes. Granted, sometimes when I push the second screen, it pushes everything inside further. When the load is too far from the stem tip, the vape is less efficient and you need to get the heater higher in temperature to cope for the loss.

A couple centimeters (half an inch) makes a lot of difference already. Energy is simply lost to heat everything but the load itself (wood, glass, etc) For maximum efficiency you need to sit the stem fully inside the vape and have the load as close to the tip as possible.

When the screens+load sandwich moves too deep inside the stem, I use a pencil or similar object to push the stack down from the mouth side.

Also to be clear, I put both screens the same way in the stem: dome side facing towards mouth and basket facing towards heater. If you put the second screen dome side out, it's a pain to remove it. The other way round you can pinch the screen lip easily and pull it out.

I'm on vacation at the moment so I don't keep my ABV. I just go on the balcony and blow the load out in one go like a trumpet. It's super fast and clean. Stem preparation is also really fast, probably under 20 seconds (hand grinding/tearing included) I'm so glad I'm not wasting my time on silly preparation rituals like I was when I was smoking joints...

Whenever there is silence in the thread... you know lots is getting done, haha.

@duff , milky! Love seeing those videos!

@Xelatsok Very interesting reports! I love the look of the acrylic stem, and it opens up a lot of really cool colour/shape options. I'd love to experiment with SS chambers... I think it would add just a touch of conduction to the outside of the herb load.

Man....those bent acrylic stems are so awesome!

@KeroZen Pretty much mirrors my thoughts on double basket screen loading. Glad to hear it!

Wow. I just discovered this thread. It is serious bedtime reading! Congrats to Dan and all involved!

Will be looking at Nomad v2 with interest. (Is there a website for the Nomad ?)
An on-demand portable for herbs is high on my shopping list as the Arizer Air I have for on -the- road use is sometimes too slow.

I probably wouldn't go for it if it still uses nichrome but it's an understandable choice... I as far as I know stainless steel is probably very inefficient and would chew through batteries.

Beautiful craftsmanship!

I wish you were right but it seems opposite. When I finish the load, tobacco in the middle of the bowl is already dry, brittle, vaped out. And there is some pretty fresh, wet and sticky tobacco clung to the bowl's walls. Unlike the middle of the bowl, it does not go away easily when I blow through the stem. So I either ignore it or brush it out sometime. I suppose metal bowl does not add / conduct heat to adjacent tobacco layer, but cools it down in contrary. I had same clung tobacco with glass stem but in lesser degree.
I'd love to experiment with SS chambers...
Let's do it? I have some vision of stem, which does not withdraw a heat from the load and cools vapor effectively at the same time. I use the device intensively and pursue best vapor. I am crazy good tester who ruined his Hi-Med heater already :) On the other hand, now I have a good idea on heater improvement too.

Ah..I don't really have the time to go through the whole thread... What's the price and availability status for this gorgeous vape? Is there a long waiting list?

Do yourself a favor... Read it... It will give you answers to all your questions and then some ;)

This thread is kind of the first step towards getting a Nomad in my opinion. . :)

In short : There is a waiting list and price depends on buyers choise of materials to be used.

They start at a bit over $300 for the base model and go up with different customization.

Not sure how many people are on the wait list, but expect a long wait regardless. As far as I know Dan hasn't quite started the second batch, and there will be more batches before you. Be patient waiting for this vape, and that patience will be rewarded.

But yeah, read the thread.

@Xelatsok If you have access to larger screens to play with, I have an idea that might help.

If you could make a partial cone shape in the screen (it wouldn’t need to come to a point, but it should slant in at least a bit) and fold the outer edge over at the right diameter to fit tightly in the stem and use that as the screen closest to the heater it would pull air around the outside of the load.

I’m not sure if the center would suffer or not, but I think it’s worth a try if you’re getting consistently under-done tobacco around the edges.

If that does make it worse for the center of the load, you could try flattening the rim straight up the stem rather than folding it over. That should leave the top part of the load still touching the walls and even out the resistance a bit which should increase airflow through the center again.

I’ll try to draw it out:

Original

|_| (with an indentation in the center)

vs

‘\_/‘ (both ‘s should be facing out/down)

vs

| | (with shorter |s)
\_/

This doesn’t seem to be an issue for cannabis users, for other readers who may be worried by this discussion.

If you decide to try it, please let us know how it goes!

Starting to develop a patina on the bronze bottom plate and the gold on the sleeve has mellowed somewhat since new. The Nomad has now with some initial expermentation and occasional charring become my daily driver.
I found the learning curve minimal with this being my first unregulated vape, but it does require some concentration. Thought I had it dialed and was confident in demonstrating its use to a friend. As course as usual when you try to demonstrate things after saying how “Brilliant” it was it inevitably went wrong. As I listened to him talking I wasn’t concentrating on the vape and charred. Fantastic demo. Haha
This is all with the Low/ Med heater.

I haven’t had much use yet for the Med/High heater. I did try with it through water on the first day using my Orbiter and combusted.....yuck! :ugh: I need to try again now I have more of a feel for the device.

Overall this is a beautifully crafted and perfectly functioning portable vape, which I love.

Thankyou @Dan Morrison

Ok, thanks. I will try to read the thread and join this elite vaping club ... but please satisfy my curiosity: is the design with the papier maché sleeve because the wood gets too hot to hold comfortably?

It does help a tiny amount but is not necessary. The Nomad is perfectly usable without the sleeve. The wooden base to the Nomad is part of the paper sleeve and just serves to hide the heater modules and battery and is permanently attached to the sleeve. You can slide the base and sleeve off and use easily without. It just wont stand up vertically. You can see above in my pics.

@delloy : give the high power heater a try with a half flat cell (3.7 to 3.5V), it's more manageable dry yet still more powerful than the low one on a full cell. If you push the voltage down further there seems to be a band where the power is similar (i.e. it almost feels like you are using the low power heater on a fresh cell)

I notice that you still have the black spot on the battery post thumb-screw tip. I thought it was part of the design but I somehow managed to accidentally scratch mine and it went away, leaving a uniform shiny surface below. Don't know if that black spot is meant for decoration or just a leftover of the aging process used?

@KeroZen Thx I will give that a try later today. The black on the top of the thumbscrew is just a part of the finish Dan applied to it after hand knurling the sides of the screw. Mine used to cover the top but has worn just on the edges where I grip it leaving the spot you see.

Is this for 2 screens loading method? I set the domed screen inside the Nomad to avoid “2 screens in stem” use.

Yes, that idea would be for the second screen closer to the heater. I’ve never tried it or seen it done, but if the standard |_| shaped screen leaves under-done materials on the sides of the stem with tobacco (and maybe some other materials?) it seems like it should help and I think it would be worth a try.

I’d try it myself but I don’t have any vaporizer of this type yet and I don’t use tobacco.

I understand not wanting to bother with a second screen, but I think this could be easy enough to deal with...maybe even easier if it was shaped like this?
