What’s up with imgur?

It seems like all imgur images are now broken. Is this a result of their Cold War with reddit? Maybe it’s just my browser for some reason?

In any case, now large portions of FC are completely irrelevant. It seems all of my pictures are gone. I’ve feared this scenario for a while, any time one platform gets too big it doesn’t work out well for end users.

It's a strange bug that is happening with imgur's embedded images right now. I seems that an image needs to be loaded twice (first load gives a 403 error) for it to show up here.

If you want to post a pic and it shows a broken image link, do the following: Click the "Edit" link and then hit "Save Changes" and the image(s) should load. Edit: that only works for the person viewing the image; it doesn't actually fix the problem.

Hopefully this issue will be resolved shortly, but that's all I know for now.

Right. What's even stranger is that if you quote a post where the imgur images are not showing, the images appear correctly in the quote when you are writing your post...

Sub'ing to this thread as I'm a bit worried too, I put all my eggs in that single basket...

It occurs to me that perhaps the "fix" I mentioned will only work on the "fixers" pc. :hmm:

To test this, can I get a quick survey of who can/can't see Cyberguy's cat in this post? Thanks in advance.

Same here. I try hard not to but I made an exception for imgur. I even deleted my pics once they were uploaded so I have no backups. Oh well, I knew better. Luckily it looks like the pictures should be back before too long.

@Stu: I quoted the cat picture and I see it appearing in the quote even after it's been posted. Now can other people see the cat in my new post?

EDIT: wow! now that I posted in that thread, when I come back to the page I can see 3 cats out of 4 in Cybrguy's posts!

Sorry I edited my post above while you were answering.

First land on the page: no cats.

Had to quote the post to see the cat in the edit window, then I posted the quote and I could see the cat in my posted quote.

Went back to the page to check and now could see 3 cats out of 4...

@steama: I think the bit about "not turning us into your CDN" is relatively new. It was fine in the past to use direct links to imgur. Wonder if it's in response to the cold war mentioned in the first post?

If not why do they even propose the option to get direct links in BBcode form to put in forum posts? They could just force everyone to use the album link to drive traffic to their site.

Well gang, I hate to tell you but I don't think it's imgur's problem.

Tinypic is working because they don't use a secure protocol (like this forum).

Imgur transmits in https so it's possible that his site's antiquated security is catching up to it.

I have said it all along.... this site is totally unsecure. Trust me on this one. LMAO

I just emailed tinypic to see if they were going to switch to https only any time soon.

If you don't have backups of your pics, there is a single click backup option on imgur to download all your pics.

If we had an admin, he could change the site to allow server hosting of the current pics but the server would have to have enough hard drive space to store the pics. I doubt we have that much space which is why they force off-site proxy hosting (which is a security hazard in itself).

I'll let you know if Tinypic gets back to me.

Hey @KidFated. (or anyone else) if you would please do me a favor.

Post that same image you posted from tinypic only change the url from http to https.

I am pretty sure you'll end up with a dead link.

I would, but I broke my phone an hour ago and am on a junker until I replace it, took forever just to access FC from this thing.

This has happened before and was corrected after @vtac contacted imgur. It is not some new Trumpian initiative or the result of an imgur crackdown on cannabis related images or our antiquated security. Imgur returns a 403 (access forbidden) on the first load because your browser is sending referrer information that imgur doesn't like for some reason. You can control this for many browsers by turning off this "feature". You probably want to install an extension because you don't want this to happen for every website. The one I use for Chrome is here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...emaehjncibihehgneicjgfbilpdl/related?hl=en-US. This one is recommended for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/smart-referer/.

Thanks for the new info. Maybe it’s the “fuck” in the domain name that is being sent as referrer info and getting caught by a profanity filter of some sort, perhaps to prevent porn sites from using imgur to host images? Wild speculation on my part.

Can’t install extensions on safari on the iPhone can you? So I can’t do that in order to get pics. This is aggravating. A lot of photos I contributed in the last few weeks in certain threads is killing me for not being seen.

We've been notified by imgur that the issue is due to the fact that we have a classifieds section. This is against their terms of service regarding non-commercial use (even though we don't make any money from sales) and so they are blocking their images to our forum.

While we continue to try to resolve this problem, the best solution for now is to simply add the add-ons that Pak provided a few posts back. These will essentially fix the problem for your browser, eliminating the issue. I realize this doesn't help everyone, but for Chrome and FireFox users, it's a simple workaround.

If they want us to pay a commercial license of sorts, maybe the mods could set up some kind of "donate button" to raise funds for that? Or a patreon page? Or any kind of crowdfunding actually (easier said than done due to our discussion topic though...)
