What's the best most awesome box mod in the whole world?

For the few of you who know me, you know I'm new and totally stupid to all this. I have been following the advice from members here and I am acquiring a ton of awesome stuff and I'm not wasting a lot of money in between by buying the wrong stuff and learning the hard way. The idiot's guide to life. LOL

I am so thrilled with my Divine Tribe V3 and some of the other items you all have recommended and now it's time to upgrade the box mod.

I currently just bought the Joytech eVic Basic and it's very cool but it seems to run down pretty quickly.

I don't have any clue what to ask for or to look for. I see some are "Firmware Upgradable" What the fuck? Firmware in a battery? OK, whatever.

I'm sure everyone has their own opinion based on their own needs but since I don't even know my own needs (other than longer life) I am open to any and all suggestions.

So, which one should I buy?

And.... thank you.

Hi hackerman, I've seen some of your other threads, and you're asking lots of good questions & learning, and you can write coherent sentences & paragraphs in proper english, and you want to vape instead of smoke! So I don't think you can really be that dumb, give yourself some credit!

You've been getting some good advice, and I think you made a good pick with the DTV3 & evic basic combo. Maybe you're getting more familiar with box mods now, too?

I currently just bought the Joytech eVic Basic and it's very cool but it seems to run down pretty quickly.

I don't have any clue what to ask for or to look for. I see some are "Firmware Upgradable" What the fuck? Firmware in a battery? OK, whatever.

The little evic basic is nice, but it's a compact, small internal-battery mod, designed for on-the-go vaping, that's why you're running the battery down quickly. With a medium sized 10mm donut on the DTV3, I still get between 100-120 puffs on a full charge with the 1500mah battery on the evic basic, not bad. Or, about 80-100 puffs on my dual-donut cubis pro mini tanks, also respectable for a tiny mod/battery.

If you want more run-time on a single full battery charge, you want to look into vapes with larger / multiple batteries, ideally user-swappable, like 18650 batteries. The evic basic is only the tiniest member of that brand / mod family, and there's a whole bunch of larger battery mods of that brand that I could randomly throw out at you that I like in some way at least:

joyetech evic VTC mini / Vtwo mini, cuboid, cuboid mini, eleaf pico, eleaf invoke, joyetech primo & primo mini SE, wismec RX-whatever, there are so many more decent mods between those brands, different shapes, sizes, colors & battery options. Start looking around to see what you like. Between those brands, they all use the same chipset and have decent temp control, and work all about the same.

Firmware is like the software that is on your box mod. So that basically means you can upgrade the software. With your evic basic & all those other mods I listed, you can even install a 3rd party firmware called "Arcticfox" made by some russian hackers (don't worry it's ok) that gives you lots more features, control & performance over your mod. Perhaps a bit beyond your level at the moment, but your current mod can already do it, you can grow into it.

I'm sure everyone has their own opinion based on their own needs but since I don't even know my own needs (other than longer life) I am open to any and all suggestions.

So, which one should I buy?

And.... thank you

Like you said, we all have our favorites and preferences, and I like those brands, but to the spirit of your original question, what is the best box mod? On a strictly performance level, probably not the ones I mentioned. Generally speaking, mods with the DNA 75/200 series chipsets are regarded as "the best" They also have upgradeable firmware with a program you install on your windows pc to customize & fine tune tons of features and options on your mod (just like you already can with arcticfox) And the DNA mods tend to have the highest quality internal components too. Despite this, DNA mods tend to have larger box sizes & weights and smaller screens relative to their battery capacity compared to joyetech & eleaf mods, which is important to me, main reason why I haven't bought a DNA mod yet probably. For you, the DNA chipped mods may not be as user friendly, with the smaller screen and advanced features, needing to be configured on a PC, as opposed to the basic but decent stock performance without a PC & larger screens on some of the other mods?

And there are plenty of other good brands of mods with good chipsets that I haven't tried but hear good things about, also. Check out mods by voopoo, vaporesso, tesla, and probably others I haven't heard of too. For vaping concentrates good temp control matters alot for us. Avoid mods from brands like SMOK who I hear have crappy TC performance even though they may look cool.

You're with the DT donuts, I posted a semi-random arbitrary list of current TC mods referenced mostly by size on the DT thread recently, could be a good jumping-off point for some web searches.

I don’t know enough about Box Mods to give a fair opinion, but you should definitely look at the Tubo thread:
http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/tubo-evic.22992/

Good luck with your search!

The tubo evic is definitely a great little vape! But it's a modified, enclosed vape primarily for flowers, and you can't remove the heater section from the box mod section of the vape, it's a sealed unit. But being based on the venerable evic Vtwo mini mod, that might be something that hackerman might want to look at for flower vaping, if something like the DT 510-herb atty isn't potent enough for hackerman? (if he's even trying to vape flowers too?)

Cmon hackerman! We need to get that 20-joint-a-day count down! :D Is that why you're "hacker" man?

Thanks VD.... another incredible answer from the FC membership.

I'll check out the ones you mentioned and pick one. ;)

Ya know, in another life a million years ago, I used to admin and mod a number of forums that taught computer security (hacking). It was not uncommon to see simple questions, like "What's the Greatest Box Mod" answered with "Read read read first and then come back and ask questions." I always hated that answer. LOL It's nice that people here have the patience and the willingness to walk morons like me through the basic steps to get us on the path. Shit, who knows. Maybe someday I'll learn enough around here to actually help someone else . LOL

Again and again I say it. Pretty awesome forum with some fucking awesome members.

Thanks again. :)

@Hackerman

Good to see you enjoying the Evic Basic!

Would you be interested in a larger box mod, with a fixed, non removable battery like the Evic Basic, just with more battery capacity; or would you like a box mod with user replaceable cells which you would charge on an independent battery charger?

The advantage of a non removable battery is it's simple as pie, just plug the cord in to charge. The advantage of removable cells is the ability to "keep the party going" with as many spares as you want. Those 18650 cells do take some safety precautions though compared to a built in battery.

Ideally you'll find another great mod for home use, and can keep the Evic Basic for on the go.

I am checking out the different models now.

Short answer..... What do you mean by, "18650 cells takes some safety precautions".

Thanks

glad you like DT v3 :)

Make sure you get the good 18650 batteries from Matt (Sony, LG), and as @invertedisdead noted, these are Lithium Ion battery cells, and as such they have safety issues you need to be aware of (these are the same type of cells they use to build EV cars)... do not let them become physically damaged, do not leave one charging unattended, and be aware of the restrictions of carry-on and checked luggage for the airlines. They pack a LOT of power.

I've got 3 eVic Joyetech vTwin Mini's with a variety of DT donuts (including Vape Donkey's dual donut Cubis Mini Pro tanks), I have an external battery charger and swap batteries out of the various box-mods as needed.

I'm tempted to get that Thor box-mod to go with the DT QQ... but I'm not rollin' in dough.

There are a couple 'alternative' firmware programs, ArticFox is well thought of, and gives you more flexibility in control of the donut (PID is the new TCR).

Enjoy!

p.s. lots of old hackers around, I started on an Anderson-Jacobsen acoustic coupled modem! :)
go 2600!

Any DNA product would be my vote. Except the DNA40 from my memory had quite a few bugs. DNA products are night and day difference between any random box mod you put them up against. They are much smoother and allow so many different options for customization everything. DNA200 was a great mod when I used to vape. Very efficent as well, I may have charged my triple 18650 mod like once a week or so. Also enjoyed the sDNA 75 for a long while.

Fairwayman,
OK, so far I own the Joyetech eVic Basic that I mentioned in the first thread. And, now I bought an Eleaf iStick which claims a 5000mAh battery.

Next, I want to go up one more step and get a dual battery model, mostly for home use. Both the other models are nice to carry and the Eleaf lasts pretty long, even in my hands.

However, for home use, I want the big boy. So, I am looking at what's available and I see there seems to be a new battery in town. The 27700 or 27-70 or whatever.

Is this better that the 18645 (or whatever they are called) that everyone has been using. Since I'm buying new, I might as well get the better one. Price doesn't seem too much different.

And, I notice that some of the box mods come with branded batteries. For example, the iJoy Captain that I am looking at comes with "iJoy" brand batteries.

So, should I go with 27700. Or, does it matter?

And, is off branding of batteries (like iJoy) a thing to avoid?

Thanks for stepping me through all this. I know it can be frustrating answering the same noob questions over and over. ;)

Thanks

So the batteries you are referring to are the new 21700 (or 20700) vs the more widely adopted standard 18650.

The numbers relate the the physical dimensions of the battery.

21700 = 21mm (Diameter) by 70mm length.

20700 = 20mm by 70mm, only 1mm less in diameter to 21700.

18650 = 18mm by 65mm.

Supposedly the 2x700's have a larger energy density than the 18650's. I've seen all sorts of figures banded around but on average it tends to work out to about 20% more energy in the 2x700 series. The greater the energy density the higher the mAh. In theory 2x700's should represent larger mAh ratings and thus last longer.

However the 2x700 series is newer and therefore more expensive than 18650's.

I've only been able to try an IJOY 20700 and I was NOT impressed. I have many 18650's that last far longer than the IJOY 20700.

*I recommend anyone using Li-Ion batteries read the:
18650 Battery Safety

Awesome reply. Thanks so much. Do you think the poor performance was a result of the batteries? Or, was it the box itself?

Thanks again.

I was looking at the iJoy Captain with 2 batteries but, now I see they have a Maxo with 3 batteries.

Not really stuck on iJoy. Just that I have an eVic and an Eleaf so I was making the rounds to learn the difference between manufacturers.

As for safety, so far, both mods I bought have internal batteries. I presume the mods have overcharge protection and all the other goodies that make sure even morons like myself don't blow themselves up. Neither said anything about not leaving on the charger overnight or, really any precautions at all. I did read the safety thread you posted and I read some stuff on Google about it. I didn't see anything that's not common sense (if there is such a thing any more. LOL)

If I get a box with removable batteries, I don't plan to get a charger anyway and I plan to charge right in the box. And, like I said, if it's a brand name box, I am ASSuming that their design is intended to not only keep me safe... but to keep them out of court.

Thanks again for the awesome reply.

Definitely the batteries, mod work fine with 18650's.

I prefer the eVic over the IJOY mainly because I can run different software on it. Currently I'm running ArcticFox with a Splinter on the mod.

You should be fine with the regulated mods, they should as standard have overcharge / under charge detection, polarity detections and the other basic safety precautions that you would expect.

I always recommend the safety thread when discussing Li-Ion even for regulated mod users just to cover basic awareness. People still need to know how to handle and treat their cells and should be aware of what happens when the go wrong.

If I get a box with removable batteries, I don't plan to get a charger anyway and I plan to charge right in the box.

Some people prefer to only charge using quality external chargers. I have an X-Tar VC2 (amongst others) but I still end up charging using the mod because I don't think there is any real world benefit over removing and charging separately (my opinion and experience, others will disagree).

External chargers of course are great if you want to have spares charging and they offer some options like limiting the charge rate or bringing cells back from under voltage.

ASSuming that their design is intended to not only keep me safe... but to keep them out of court.

Haha Yeh that's basically my opinion too, that and trading regulations.

Thanks again for the awesome reply.

More than welcome bud.

Just to add that I'm mostly in the same situation as you. I use a mod with the RBT Splinter (got it about 2 weeks ago) which is a convection dry herb 510 mod.

It's not quite the same as DTv3 but similar enough. I think the Splinter probably demands more wattage, mine is currently set to 38watts.

I mostly vape at home and I've been using this setup as my daily driver.

The major difference between our vaping habits is I'm more of a micro doser. I think you have quite a high tolerance.

I've found on my dual battery 18650 mod that I'm getting about 2-3 days between charges. I tend to charge when the batteries get to 25%.

I'd recommend that what ever you go for buy double the amount of batteries and an external charger, it's always nice to have a backup set ready to swap in if you are in a hurry.

Some mods I've been interested in are:
  • Wisemec 2/3 - I like the upgradeable firmware and option to use 2 or 3 18650's
  • A DNA 75 mod - DNA chip set is renowned for its Temp Control accuracy.
  • A DNA 200 based mod - I'd love to have a custom made DNA 200 mod. The 200 series run on LiPo batts not Li-Ion. Main advantage is high watt output for ecig atomisers (which I use).
Thanks again for the awesome reply.

My pleasure bud, hope it helps.

Wow, once again, thanks so much.

Knowledge is power... well, for some. For others like me, it's just a stumbling block. LMAO... So, now the iJoy Captains all seem to come with the iJoy battery and the Maxo uses 18650's not 2x700's. So, one strike against each of those.

So, now I am looking at the Reuleax line. Wow, they sure have some nice looking models. I like the 2 or 3 battery option on that model you linked but even the manufacturer says it's better to externally charge that one.

I suppose it's better to have a charger if you have 1 box and want to swap batteries. In my case I have 3 or 4 boxes and one is always being charged anyway so I don't need the extra expense and hassle of a separate battery charger.

How about the new Reuleaux RX2 21700? That looks pretty nice. Also, I noticed the manufacturer didn't have the same 'warning' about externally charging on the RX2 21700 model like they did on the 2/3 model. I wonder why? Just an oversight maybe?

I'll run through the info and see if I can make a decision.

Thanks again and again for the help.

Just to throw a wrench into the works I'll mention my geekvape aegis, it uses a single 28650 as well as a single 18650 with a sleeve. I like it better than my 18650x2 mods, it lasts as long and you can run the battery down past halfway and still vape with it, it's my favorite with my splinter so far anyways.

Out of curiousity because I have the aegis..and was thinking of using it because of the wide base..what settings are you using in the aegis. I just ordered my splinter and want to try some things. Thanks

Congrats on your upcoming splinter/aegis 28650 setup, please check back in when you've had it going for a bit. I started out at ~29 watts, and it's been a while but I just checked and it's down at ~24 watts atm so that's how I'm using it recently. I use it in full manual mode, where temperature can also be adjusted with draw speed and finger pulsing. Much less finger pulsing on the lower setting but longer warmup times.

None of my TC mods drive my Splinters as effectively or consistently as my wismec dna250. They all work fine and seem well enough made. The eleaf invoke is plasticky but fits the Splinter well and runs firmware like Arctic Fox and the Tubo one. The wismec rx gen3 dual is also a nice size and shape. Finally the VTC Dual is small, solid and affordable.

We just need something built well with the specs and price of the hcigar VT75D so we can all live in the future. Until then wattage mode does work pretty well but TC doesn't compare to even a regular (non-C) DNA mod.

Well..got my v1. Ice only played with it a couple times..but it sure did the job!! I love it. I’ve been reading and trying to study and didn’t put it on the aegis yet but on a wismec RX200S. Can some maybe tell be their settings? Where they lock their ohms and what not. I would just like to experiment some. I put Tubo on my wismec so if that helps! I appreciate it and man I love this thing
