You might know this already but for the benefit of Splinter owners who don't, the Splinter was never intended to be run in any mode but power. TCR mode doesn't actually control the temperature of the Splinter because it doesn't know the temperature of the Splinter. Instead, it's measuring the change in resistance and then applying an algorithm to vary the power in order to try to keep the temperature readout on your box mod close to whatever you've set. There are some variables in there that make this tricky, one of the biggest being the material the heater is made from. Another is the algorithm used, which is basically tweaked to make the temperature display look right, where "right" is what the designer thinks it should be. For example, the temperature displayed in TCR mode using @funkyjunky's tubo firmware is calibrated to a temperature probe placed at the load chamber of a tubo. Nobody has done the measurements for a Splinter.

I've been kindly informed that what I said here isn't entirely correct. The box mod does actually know the temperature of the Splinter heater by measuring its resistance. The rest of what I said still applies, however. An algorithm determines what is displayed, and it has to be tuned to the attached device. So 190°C on a tubo is not necessarily and most likely isn't exactly the same as 190°C on a Splinter.

Splinter no. v2092 reporting for duty

Unfortunately it needs to go back to its creator :ugh::wave:

I gave it a good try, with each of these two single 18650 mods. I got a little wispy vapor with the one on the left, but the mod seem challenged with it so I switched it to the one on the right. Same thing, it seemed like it was trying, then it lit up like a christmas tree! Weirdly, there was no burnt smell. The glass went bright white, to the point that I thought it was a new feature. But I don't recall reading about Ryan sneaking an led-based accent illumination system into the splinter. Now I get a "no atomizer" message on both mods.
:(

btw I love the fidget spinner

The whole family together for a fleeting moment, hopefully they'll be reunited soon :peace:

edit: just wanted to add that Ike (rbt cs agent) responded immediately when I emailed in today, it's all packed up for mailing tomorrow and should get back to upstate ny this week sometime

Hey is that A Devine Tribe Gen 2 on the left?
It's divine tribe, but it's their brand spankin' new quartz quest.
I need to catch up on that thread too
Highly recommended:science:

Oh yeah, I should add to the above that Ike (rbt cs agent) responded immediately when I emailed in today, it's all packed up for mailing tomorrow and should get back to upstate ny this week sometime

I've been using my splinter almost exclusively. But it gets too hot to use without taking a cool down break. (The battery, splinter, mp and mod all hot.) I haven't done anything with settings and it tends to run in the 200F range even though it shows 450 when it first comes on.
Is the heat normal or is there some way to prevent it.

What is a fidget spinner?

Are you using FJ software? Cruising? I think you need to change your resistance setting for Splinter perhaps? @AJS should know, your heater isn't glowing is it? or try power mode?

FJ software but cruise control doesn't work so I just hold the button down. No glowing.
Somewhere in this thread are their instructions for changing to power mode or changing resistance.
I'm using a basic evic two one battery model.
(I have another mod I've never used but am wary about switching to see if it helps because it seems like there have been some problems with switching mods).

Okay so change the coil resistance setting to .245Ω per @AJS and that should get you to some more accurate temp control for the Splinter (Tubo thread has info where to change that value in the software if you don't recall) but I am also not sure how you switch to wattage/power mode in FJ software... They'll know over in the Tubo thread I am sure though

Thanks everyone. This is starting to get complicated with so many adjustments. Is there firmware I can use instead of FJ's so that I end up with settings that don't need adjustment?

(And I have no idea what a heat sink is)

Isn't the tubo firmware set to 75W by default? Splinter should be used in the 20-50W range only.
I think that's only the maximum you allow it to pull from. Mine is set for 75 by default but in temp control it rarely goes more than 30. Just bounces between like 5-30 as it keeps temp. Unless you meant something else. In Wattage mode by itself I have no clue what's default but 75 would be disasterous haha

I think there will always be adjustments needed to set up temp control at least, but stock power modes should be fine? @AJS please help Mags for me! I havent begun to poke around with these things yet myself

Thanks everyone for your help. I found some instructions for changing resistance and I think power on FJ's website. But nothing on watts.

Yay! I think there should be a place to change mode from TCR (temp) to power/wattage? But with the resistance adjusted, is temp control working out as it should more now?

See the pretty pictures in @grokit last post
In their 3rd picture showing the family together you can see a heat sink in position under the Splinter.
The hope is that the fins act like a radiator to dissipate the heat before it reaches the 510 connector and it starts cooking the mod.

There's a few to choose from here
https://www.fasttech.com/search?heat sink
I think you want 24 or 25mm

And fidget spinners ........ you don't need to know anything about them :)

Okay so the heat sink above came with the glass atomizer on the left. But I used it on the right with the splinter, to not only dissipate heat away from the mod, but also to raise the splinter so it clears the pico's battery cap, which is hard to see from this angle but it's in the way of the splinter. Then I had a 510-threaded fidget spinner (Really? They were all the rage last year, not the 510 type but check the (1st) link I'd be really surprised If you haven't heard of these!) that I ordered a while back for kicks. It's a perfect heat sink substitute for the quartz quest setup it spins forever lol. I can't wait to get my splinter back!

Thanks everyone for your help. I found some instructions for changing resistance and I think power on FJ's website. But nothing on watts.
Should be 4 taps to switch between temp or power (wattage). The "tcr" or "Wattage" or whatever setting ur on should start blinking. Use the right button (up, or +) to cycle through until you get to Power. Power is Wattage. Again use the right button for up. Left button for down. 32 W is very high for me. I suggest 25 just in case to avoid accidental combustion.

Cruise mode is double tap but don't do in Power (Wattage) mode.

I will run through everything in a video for you soon lil mags. It's hard off the top of my head to navigate everything. Easier with it infront of me.

Edit: also check your clicks to find out what your cruise mode is, warmup, setting change. Etc. To do this, hold down power and + to access the menu. Go to Menu then click interface. Then click "clicks". This will tell you, for example 1 click is fire, 2 click is cruise mode. 3 click is warmup, 4 click is setting change. 5 click is turn on/off. Write down or tell me what your clicks are set to. That will let you know how to do most things and good to keep track of.

I think I've found everything (thanks to everyone) but not sure it's going to help the heat. The clicks setting were empty so I added an edit, an on/off and something else but I'll change them to the ones AJS just posted. No wonder cruise didn't work. I don't think I need a warm up setting though since it warms up within a few seconds. Although that may be related to it being too hot.
My power was already on and set to 20 watts. My coil resistance is 0. I'm not sure what it should be set at. FJ's instructions say to lower it if it's too hot but there's nowhere to lower it. Should I set it to .245?

(Hopefully this will be helpful for someone else. I can't be the only not tech person around)
