Light Box Vaporizer design and build thread (formerly B1)

I’ve decided to challenge myself to design and build the easiest to build, least expensive, most mind bogglingly simple yet fabulously functional vape.

Another parameter I have set for myself is that it works for at least the next 50 years with daily use.

While being made from common parts.

:D

This is going to be fun.

I will do a step by step build log with supply links in this thread if anyone wants to make one for themselves.

Edit: Yes, I already have it designed

Right on man. I'll keep an eye on this and watch the journey. Those some like some nice parameters for a DIY project. :)

Thanks, I want a desktop vape that is truly on demand convection. Something with a bit more nuts than a mini log vape but faster to use than my Vapor Tower.

Definition of ‘on demand’: It’ll heat up in less time than it takes me to load the bowl.

That way it can sit next to my clumsy ass without being hot all the time.

Check out the New Vape Flower Pot , it's truly amazing and will last a lifetime with daily use. But besides that i wish you luck on your journey .
Wand vapes don’t work for me. Plus I already have a bolt heater ;)
(not a joke, I do have a bolt heater which is basically the same thing)

Because of my disability, I’m too clumsy at night.

That’s why I don’t have any glass pieces.

Thank you though.

It's not a wand vape such as lets say the Lsv by 7th floor & as for the bolt heater , a bolt heater is not designed to provide optimal airflow in a way for perfect vaporization. The Flower pot is designed with airflow and extraction in mind and has been tweaked many times by user feedback to be made even better so a bolt heater would never provide even a fraction of the flower pot can. I understand you have a disability and you actually don't have to use glass , the company sells pieces made of acrylic i believe so nothing will break on you. Possibly may be some form of rubber. Anyway i'd say its the toughest , most long lasting vape you can as it only uses a Enail and most Enails have been proven to be tough as nails. Quick video just to show you the power : Either way i wish you the best in making a vape -

I’m very fimilar with the flower pot. Not a fan. Exposed heating elements of any kind are a no go.

Again, thank you.

cui bono?
I've always dreamed of an EVO in a log format!
Small, no exposed hot parts, all glass air path and easy to handle. @Boden !!

What about the beloved Underdog Alpha Core - a log vape with a huge heater core, about twice the area of a standard core. Pic is not mine - but here's an idea:

kaPvfy8.jpg

It obviously does not have an all glass vapor path, but in exchange it is built like a tank!

I have one and a huge 18mm gong that can fit about 0.15 to 0.2g and it is ridiculous.

Sorry to sidetrack your thread, @Boden - I assume you have already fully reviewed the Bulli and Project threads? Is your creation going to be along those lines? Looking forward to seeing your progress!:peace:

Got ya man , understandable . Can you show some designs of what you have been working on ?
Unfortunately my wife is on vacation from work and I can’t get a fucking thing done.

*in the background* Honey... can you move the woodpile three feet to the left.

grumble...

I’ll go out and buy the parts tomorrow.

No worries, the more ideas the better.

*in the background* Honey... can you carry all this heavy shit up to the attic?

Sigh...

Got the heater and voltage regulator sorted out.

Now I just need a box to put it in.

Total cost so far 15$

Edit: That’s a 100W halogen. Makes ~96.3W of heat and 3.7W of light at 120V. Log vapes make ~10W of heat.

Bwahahahaha

Of course! Even at 40W with the Milaana on a fresh cell you can combust from cold in less than 10 seconds.

But I think 100W is overkill. See, in the Tubo Evic they run at 75W in TCR and even folks with elephant draws barely use over 30W continuous to sustain their giant rips.

I think once regulated the 100W will only be seen for one second maximum, to get instant heat-up, then the regulator will hard throttle down to the 10-30W range, where most other vapes on the market are (regardless of heating mode)

Beware that halogen bulbs introduce quite some lag though, as you have to overcome the glass insulation before really heating the air. Unless you encase the whole thing with mirrors or highly reflective material like polished metal etc. This way you could make the IR energy bounce back, giving it a chance to produce effective work instead of being just wasted.

If you didn't already, check the Apollo thread. He managed to source bulbs optimized for heat rather than light. But maybe that's what you found already? Latest version is 50W and quite a beast. Lot's of interesting implementation details to gather from reading that thread.

I was gonna say check out the Herbalizer (not to buy one...I’d rather see what you come up with) as an example of something that does what you want, and then I scrolled down and saw your bulb!

I’ve been playing with the Apollo and it’s really cool. It is a portable that uses a halogen bulb and you can customize the amount of time it heat soaks before it’s ready. Even though the bulb is nearly instant, the ss environment robs the system of heat until you heat soak it. So...I’m interested to see what kind of environment you come up with to get a great instant first hit.

Thanks for bringing us along while you create!

Almost there...
How about putting a thermocouple in there and have an enail controller?
Digital control and an easier way to set it at your best temp!

With 97W, I think you may want a more precise way to regulate the power?

Don’t tell anyone but I also have 12, 25, 37 and 50W lamps for fine tuning. Each drop in wattage will increase the resolution of the dimmer.

I’ll be collecting most of the IR bouncing around inside the mirror polished SS tube with a collector mesh of oxidized SS. Nice simple blackbody absorber/radiator.

Name of game: Simple and inexpensive

Man really interesting project you have there. I am building a log vape my self atm with halogen heating too. But because of the digital temperature controller it gets a little more expensive then yours

Why not build your own controller??? $40 for the kit...

And the full DIY!

@Hippie Dickie Have you seen this DIY option yet?
