Do you like coffee?

For those that have access to Trader Joe's, I strongly suggest that you try out their Kenya AA. Great tasting coffee and imho, the best there is at TJ'S.

I purposely decided to get into coffee a couple of months ago and Trader Joe's is a great place to start. They have a pretty decent selection of whole beans...more than any other grocery store near here. They've got a decent whole bean french roast decaf that I like for my evening cups to go with vaping.

I've been cold brewing for about a year now and got some nice gifts for Christmas...a burr grinder and a Ninja home brew station thing. I didn't need the Ninja since I had a cold brew and a french press already rolling, and had given away my drip coffee maker and moved on from the Keurig.

The grinder was an instant boost to my coffee game...must have. The Ninja is very surprising. Damn thing makes cups better than I get at a coffee shop. And it does them all...cup, travel mug, ice coffee, espresso, blahblahblah. I was honestly just going to try it and then go back to my proven basics setup but instead I have shelved the basics and have been using this thing multiple times a day. I love it!

You guys roasting your own beans are blowing my mind...

I'm a dedicated aeropress user myself. I take it everywhere with me. I even take a grinder and whole beans when I travel, and an electric tea kettle. I learned of it 3 or 4 years ago from a comment by @lwien here at FC. Always something to learn here.

I really like espresso, too, but since I found the areopress, I don't bother anymore. To me, the aeropress produces a great Americano. This is in my kitchen: I haven't used it in years. It is a Pasquini Livia 90 semi-automatic next to a Mazzer Mini: makes great coffee.

The Kenya AA is very good, it was my daily for about a year. I would also suggest the Colombia Supremo (current daily). Usually South American coffees tend to be too leathery and lack the fruitiness I like, but the Supremo tastes more like an African coffee in this regard. It's also a great value.

I am a coffee addict also. I love a mug pretty much anytime, having 4-5 throughout a day usually. I also drink lots of hot tea now though because it's a condition of residence in England. Upon entering the country, they made me sign a binding oath to drink at least 2 cups of tea daily. Preferably more, but that's the bare minimum. I've come to embrace the notion that whatever life may throw at you, it can be improved upon with a nice cuppa. But back on topic:

I used an aeropress for years at my office in 2005 or 6. Loved it, the crema it can produce is just like a steamed espresso. A truly amazing and wonderful invention. I still have one somewhere... Until a few years ago, I did the fresh roast/burr-grinder/industrial coffee-maker deal for many years. A real snob. Then I got lazy! Now we have a Nespresso machine w/milk warmer/frother and it kicks ass. My wife likes to spoil me because she wants her baby to have pretty things. I find its coffee to have way more true coffee kick than the Tassimo or Kuerig pods do.

Kuerig dominate the American home market, while Nespresso does in Europe IIRC. Nespresso was smart and got their machines in the nicer suites of most top Euro-Hotels several years back. Once you've tried one, you really want one. But of our friends in the states who have a pod-type machine, all are Kuerig. Except my in-laws, they've had a Nespresso machine for years because they fell in love with them while traveling throughout Europe. I'm telling you, they're that good.

Weird but true story: I always took my coffee black for decades. Then 6 years ago, while in the hospital after nearly dying of an extremely rare and atypical type of Crohn's Disease, it immediately began to taste like dirt. So now I take my coffee with milk and some raw sugar, like a child. I know, I know, CANNABIS is safer than milk, don't tell @ataxian please... I hope I switch back to black someday! It's just that dairy stuff in general throughout Europe is sooooo superior than what is available in the states. I never ate cheese and butter like I do now, but my heart and cholesterol and all that is excellent so I don't know...:mental:
When the devil tempts me, I say "OK!"
ESPRESSO is my salvation every morning.
This habit I developed in FRANCE to function.

My wife and daughter put MILK and RAW CANE SUGAR in there EXPRESSO.
I drink my ESPRESSO BLACK. (CULTURE in my family growing up sock juice it's called)

CANNABIS after coffee.

TO study I need both!

When I lived in Costa Rica, they made coffee by grinding coffee fine, and placing in a sock-like device (like support hose) and pouring boiling water through the suspended sock into a coffee pot. Great coffee!
I was on a SURF TRIP with my boy's to COSTA RICA.
The COFFEE was not that great? (Maybe the HOTEL got it wrong?)

COLUMBIA SUMPRERRO was pretty amazing in COLUMBIA
CHILE was mostly NESS CAFE (INSTANT) 1994's circa (quit COFFEE and switched to HERBAL TEA)

I lived there for a yr 1/2. I had Costa Rican friends that had coffee fincas in Tres Rios. One fellow told me the best coffee is exported. Tarrazu', one of the many volcanoes in CR, has the reputation as the best place to grow. the roots are in soil that drains well. Like grapes, coffee doesn't like to sit in water. My friend would create his own blend of coffee from around the country, and roast it in a 5 kilo gas test roaster, and would sell it to his friends. I'm happy to say I was lucky enough to score some of that.

So very cool to find so many aeropress lovers here, but then not so surprising in a way.
Vaporists = advanced culture

@StickyShisha Thank you so much for that bit of sound advice! I'm pitching the one I kept since it's well over a decade old! I'll be ordering a new safe one to stash for the Zombie Apocalypse. No way I could cope with any sort of species-threatening without bean juice. And cannabis. Hey, what if cannabis is like bug-spray to zombies? They can smell it in your sweat or something at a high enough concentration. Only long-term stoners can survive! Who's laughing now, Mr. Sessions?!

@macbill & @ataxian I had a friend from Ethiopia, she lived with her aunt & uncle while going to university. They were very traditional and her aunt made coffee in that ^ way, it was rocket-fuel! She would put the beans in the "sock" and lay it on a concave wooden tray. She would then beat the ever-loving shit out of the sock with a small bat to "grind" the beans. I would always go in the kitchen and watch her prepare it and she would smile & laugh at my amazement with this ancient method of gogo-juice preparation. She eventually taught me & would let me help, even though I'm a dude. Good memories!

Without ESPRESSO I can't function?
Without CANNABIS either?

I wish I lived in the country?
Where I'm at was country once?

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot!

Since you're a roaster, have you tried monsooned Malibar in your Espresso blends? Or if you want to give a try, get some excellent Malibar Gold, from the Josuma Company. Green or roasted, a smoother espresso with maximum lasting crema production will not be found: see it here.

Aeropress ???

Is it the same as a "French press"? I recently bought a French press for possible future use to "water cure" cannabis to help rid it of those nasty grassy tastes, for edibles that don't taste like you are grazing in the field :)

The press I got even has two filters that work in series, a regular fine filter and then a super-fine secondary filter.
I'm a tea lover (Kenyan green and black), but should/could try some coffee.
In keeping with my experience, that Kenya AA coffee from Trader Joe's sounds like my best bet. Maybe the thing I disliked most about most coffee was the heavy acidic feeling in my stomach. How's Kenya AA on that aspect?

Here's the Aeropress coffee maker.

https://www.amazon.ca/Aerobie-83R01...143665&sr=8-1&keywords=aeropress+coffee+maker

It's not a French Press, but the concept is similar. I love mine, the Aeropress that is. It's small, inexpensive, doesn't take up counter space and it makes an awesome cup of coffee, one cup at a time.

If you haven't tried one it may well be worth your while. It's a wonderful simple contraption.

Thanks, this is interesting from their product info as I stated most coffee seemed too acidic;

  • Because of the lower temperature and short brew time, the acid level of the brew is much lower than conventional brewers

how to tell which version I have.
I bought it 2 years ago
you probably have the newer one, it has been a few years since they switched. The old one was more clear.

Aeropress ???

Is it the same as a "French press"?
not a french press. aeropress works like a large syringe filter.

and some of the best QWEt dabs i've ever had were made with the AeroPress, thats reason enough to have one.

My wife loves the prices of French (really all European) wine in England compared to the states. She definitely takes advantage of the proximity with weekend trips to Calais. But those euro economic zone benefits will be coming to an end thanks to Brexit. No more cheap french wine & cheese! When we return stateside, it'll be left-coast and we will love learning the Californium CANNABIS (me) & WINE (her).

Until fairly recently (2002?) if you wanted a good cup of coffee in England, you had to go to France!
All that was on offer was instant or maybe if you were lucky, weak brewed coffee. Thankfully no longer.
Cannabis for me please, it does a body good! :leaf:

@MinnBobber As with most things, @Squiby is giving you solid advice here. The Aeropress is a solid device, and you control the strength by your grind, amount used, and how much water you use. It's actually really similar to using a VapCap! No fucking wonder @Squiby has one and loves it!
The dude who introduced me to it way back when was my local bean roaster and coffee expert. He told me to either stop the kettle a bit early or let it cool a bit off the boil, as coffee prefers slightly cooler water than tea. Not certain, but I always followed his instructions and loved the results. You buy now! :D

@StickyShisha What?! Is this covered in a thread somewhere? If not, PLEASE do tell in your own!
Now I'm getting one for Zombie Apocalypse and another for StickyShisha Tek!

Sounds like a sausage-fest. :p Maybe @Squiby & @StickyShisha should come too.

This is my battle-tested French Press. The REI logo is barely visible now. Broke 2 glass presses before I found this one.

Lately coffee is giving me the runs. Gonna look into this less-acidic way of making coffee!

@grampa_herb and

I sometimes cold brew my coffee, especially in the summer. It's seems much less acidic than hot brewed. You might want to try it. I make a carafe of it and store it in the fridge. Add enough boiling water for your taste.

http://allrecipes.com/recipe/233721/cold-brewed-coffee/

@pxl_jockey since what we have here is a virtual condition, I'm not packing anything between my legs.:tup:But a few of the female persuasion might bring a nice balance. We'd have a grand time! I'll bring the Vapcaps.

Love its smell and taste, especially the REAL coffee from ground beans. Used to drink 2-3 strong cups per day. Now I don't like its effects anymore and only drink for taste about once per week.
