Discontinued The Grasshopper

Hey everyone, I've been a ghost on this thread for a long time — because my Hopper (original Indiegogo-backed one) had been working without any flaws for over a year (EDIT: looks like since June 2016)! Unfortunately, I dropped it at a concert in NY just before the new year and lost it (anyone on here find it? I'll pay a finder's fee! ;) ).

I did the sensible thing and immediately ordered a brand new one (while it was still 15% off). While waiting for it to ship — they listed a 2-week processing period —, I've been using my other vapes. While some of them surpass some parts of the Hopper, none of them can match it overall. I'm craving my Hopper!

From skimming the last page of this thread, it look like Hopper Labs still hasn't managed to work out the kinks in the Hoppers or their QA? I'll admit that I was a lucky one to have had minimal issues with my Hopper (I attribute this to never charging with their charger and never turning the temp dial with a battery inside).

Can anyone give me a quick primer on what current issues with Hopper Labs or new Hoppers are?

PS seriously, if anyone on FC found my hopper, I will pay a finder's fee! :D
Why do you not turn the temperature dial while a battery is inside?

Apologies for the double post, but I've received a response from Caroline to my order status inquiry. Here is a snippet:
...Unfortunately, production is still stalled while the team works to implement some new protocols and processes. This switch is taking longer than we expected but we anticipate the results will make the Grasshopper the best, most robust, portable vaporizer on the market.

We are working around the clock currently to get things back up and running and should have Hoppers shipping out again very soon. We will email you with tracking information once your order ships. I am sorry I don’t have more concrete information, but I am told to expect about another 2 week delay. I am happy to offer a Free Battery as compensation for the inconvenience.

Best,
Caroline

I feel like I'm back in 2015 again! 3 years younger in a single day, baby!

Time to go check the Indiegogo status page... ;)

EDIT:
Why do you not turn the temperature dial while a battery is inside?

I believe that rotating the temperature dial also can rotate the plate that sits on the battery, so I figure the less wear-and-tear on that, the better. Also, this keeps me from changing the temperature while the device is on, which also causes less wear-and-tear and fewer on-the-fly adjustments in the controller. Nothing concrete, but it worked for me (or seemed to).

EDIT2: I also tried to avoid changing temperature at all. I pretty much always kept it at the same temperature, except for a few unusual circumstances where I would change it.

Thanks man! Anything is worth a shot. I received a new one today purchased from vaposhop.com. So far so good. I does however confirm that I will have to send the older one in when hopper labs gets their shit in order as it's performance is crap compared to my new one

It’s not that expensive sending our units from the U.S for postage back to Hopper Labs. I feel sorry for the folks living outside America who have to pay huuuuge amounts for shipping. They need their shipping covered or they need a reimbursement IMO. We have some very tenacious and serious vape owners. You have more patience than I have.

I pay around 8 bucks in shipping from Sweden to hopper labs

not that terrible at least not for me

Whisper that brought a smirk to my face, thanks :D
I was thinking as well, how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

@manujoe .... As @TheWhisper says, turning the temp dial can impart motion to the battery (or at the very least, turn the backplate against the negative terminal of the battery). I believe it is both.

For my part, I see no reason one cannot turn the temp dial if one is simply doing a micro-adjustment. It's wanging the thing back and forth that isn't a good idea. That practice used to be a "fix" in the beginning days of hopper use discussions here, until the wear on the contacts was offered as a reason to abandon that practice. Nonetheless, I believe simply re-adjustments of Temperature during operation won't be a problem. :2c:

Hi hoppered heads!

Just a report on my hoppers, no problem with with my ti hopper cos it's a backup for the ss.

Last Saturday, ss hopper went red then off after clicks, I soaked the mp and cleaned up the chamber getting it ready to send it back for RMA (open ticket for Rma since August 17) but then I swapped the button on the ti no go but i no that the ss button is ok just the ss body is no good.
I used compress air on the battery chamber ( 1st time blow it through batts chamber) the ss hoppers revived! :) and its back in the testing.

The hoppers are still sweet to me :)

What technique did you use to air-blast the battery chamber?
Can of air? Compressor? Did you seal/plug it in, or just spray into it?

Pretty cool that worked for you. Keeping these things clean, as HL say, is the best bet for keeping the things working.
I rarely cleaned mine, and they often broke down. Pretty common I bet. I might pick up a can of air once I get my hoppers back to see if that makes cleaning easier

My new Hopper went into the red to off state in about 7 weeks. Wotta bummer. Uncertain waiting times are another thing I didn't want to read about. Like the autoreply telling me to expect 3-7 business day for them to merely reply. Why is this thing so great when it's working? I'd love to be able to say: never again.

I classically wrote a whole spiel, going off in a tangent.
Unfortunately it's so great because it's so complex and small, which causes them to be used a lot and is the reason for failure too.
Reddit is ablaze with hatred over these things, after just recently going through a rarer spell of positive and happy hopperers. I waited 13 months for my preorder, I don't mind waiting a few for them to do what needs to be done.
If the device wasn't great, I wouldn't have waited 7 months of the 13 for another unit when I already had one.
The way I see it, there's been heaps HL have wanted/needed to do, so why not just let them do it? It's the only option.
Haters should realise their comments lessen the chance of them getting what they want, not to deter them as there's validity to it, but the big affect its had on sales impacts all negatively. Prospective buyers have a clear picture as it is. A bit of patience and understanding goes a long way.

Most of this comment is me being triggered by Reddit and actually had little to do with @Hammahead's post, but..

I too had red then dead AGAIN after about 7-10 weeks. I don't want it again, so if the changes made offer that then I'll be happy.
Realistically, maybe not much will change immediately from this point, but ultimately if they have the key production they want being done under their roof, then it's reasonable to expect noticeable improvement to actually arrive.
People are quick to throw abuse back at HL, but there's a good reason no other company is filling the void. I'm okay with waiting for the one company who's making exactly the vape I want, I assume others might also think the GH is ideal, which is why anyone goes above 10 warranties. I'm at 10 warranties, 5 a piece between 2 hoppers after nearly 2 years to the day (for my OG backer vapefiend unit at least). And it's a lot, sticking with the device says a lot about it, and as annoying as it is missing them, I've had a hoper 85% of the last 2 years. 100% of the time before that, I didn't have one, but NEEDED to. I smoked pounds and pounds before these things existed, never again, yet smoking is better than many vapes for me. HL are out there in the real world doing some great work, what they've achieved so far is pretty epic. You can commend them as much as you can punch holes in their achievements. I'd love to say to some redditors, be happy letting HL get these necessary changes done and be glad not to be the one figuring it out, it's certainly beyond me. And you know what? I STILL don't see anyone making a knock-off or even successfully feature matching the one vape that ticks all the right boxes, apart from that elusive longevity. It'll be a year or two before anyone will have any idea about how robust the new changes are, but it's all positive and it is a huge challenge. It shouldn't be a huge challenge to remain positive, it's only a bad time being sans hopper because no one else can build anything like it. But HLs only 3 weeks behind their intended schedule and everyone is freaking out. "Just stop freaking out" a bad trips a bad trip, relax, get blazed and take it easy!

Wishing you a speedy hopper recovery @Hammahead and everyone else waiting it out.

It'd be nice to see other people's energy wishing for good luck for HL, and their customers, instead of whingeing like children.
Again, I just want to point out that I am referring to a few redditors being negative Nancy's.

I mean if getting blazed is hard without a hopper, use a different vape and write long forum posts whilst it heats up!
^need that instant convection to deal with the bullshit!

Lol, I think this line would have done the job
"it's only a bad time being sans hopper because no one else can build anything like it".
Building things takes time and is basically difficult. Here's to wait club :myday:

Good luck everyone.

That's good to know as otherwise it would be a one temp vape in the absence of opening the backend a thread or 2, adjusting the dial and closing it again! Unfortunately I have been whacking the dial over and back during operation on my previous grasshoppers which probably didn't help

Yep, I don't have any test data to back it up. Just a pinch of superstition and a dash of cutesy "don't change it and ya won't break it".

Hi Caroline,
I was just wondering if you have any updates on the charger and ss case shipping date? I'm a little annoyed that whilst you were happy to take my hard earned money months in advance and missing your first self imposed deadline of december i have recieved no feedback on when the items are going to be shipped to me.

You have also had my ti hopper since october and again i have had no feedback on its status.

I'm not normally one to complain but after paying shipping multiple times for multiple faulty hoppers my patience with your company is close to wearing thin and to top it all off I received an email trying to sell me a leather case, which i think is a bit cheeky when i believe your focus should be on getting my hopper back to me and delivering the case and charger I have already paid for instead of trying to get more money out of me.

I appreciate that this isn't your fault directly as you are an employee of Hopper Labs but as you are my only point of contact you are unfortunately bearing the brunt of my frustration.

I look forward to receiving some sort of explanation/update on this as soon as possible.

I own three hoppers, thirty batteries, three ti performance front ends and have purchased two warranty transfers on hoppers that my brother purchased on my behalf.

I have also spent at least 200 uk pounds on postage for warranty returns and another 200 on shipping for items i have bought from your site so i have contributed roughly 1900 uk pounds to your company and I really feel I deserve better from hopper labs.

I look forward to your prompt response and explanation.

Kind Regards,

Hi There,

I recently spoke with the team about the SS Cases and External Chargers. I was informed there was a bit of a delay in production and we are now estimating those items will begin shipping in January. I will be sure the team sends out an email update as soon as more concrete information is available. Thank you for reaching out and a bigger thank you for your patience.
I am very sorry for the delays in returning a repaired Hopper to you. We recently stalled all production to implement some new testing protocols and bring a few more processes in-house. Unfortunately, all production is still stalled while the team is implementing these new processes. I won't know more details about when your Hopper will be returned until production begins moving again. Please keep an eye out for an email update coming from the Founders shortly. I have requested they address the delay for all folks waiting on their Hopper. Your patience is appreciated and I assure you we are doing everything we can to get your Hopper back out to you right away.
I assure you the engineers are hard at work getting things rolling so Hoppers can begin shipping out again. I want to note that the folks sending the advertising emails are not responsible for getting production going so the focus is not being taken away from your service and allocated towards advertising. These are done by completely separate teams and one does not impact the timeframe for another.
Best,
Caroline

I won't be abandoning my hopper until Hopper Labs is closed and my hopper won't light up anymore. There's no other vape I can throw in my car for a trip and feel semi-safe that I won't be caught even if a cop happens to look over it.

Definitely been pulled over once, my Firefly got nabbed by the cop, but walked, or should I say rummaged, right passed my grasshopper

Hoooly crap I would never be paying that much on postage, 30 batteries too, damn. After all that the standard copy/paste response, how typical.
