CCA Liger banger V3.0

Hey guys, I've had my Liger Flat Coil 30mm for a few months now.
I've been getting lazy with the q-tipping and as a result my SiC insert now is tarred and black. I've tried burning off the residue and scratching it off at high temps of 900F+, but I am thinking it is time for an upgrade.

Is the Obsidian insert a noticeable difference compared to the regular SiC? Also, which carb cap is recommended for the 30mm buckets? I have the original storm cell, but the Hurricane and Tsunami seem to be updated/newer. Is there a general consensus on which works better for the 30mm? (I know the descriptions say the Tsunami was made specifically for the flat coil, but I would like the forum's input as well).

My back pain is unreal and being able to consistently dab CBD isolates has been keeping me alive, I figure it's time to treat my rig proper. Thanks!

Have you tried turning it (from cold) to about 275 and doing the iso/water cleaning? Also, you can torch SiC to clean it.

Can’t speak to Obsidian vs SiC but I enjoy my Obsidian insert. I believe the Tsunami (the flat one) is the cap of choice?

Price is not a problem. I admit I should have taken better care of my insert, but when I wake up at 4AM from seizing back pain and have run out of qtips, I am not going to ignore the pain and go back to sleep (I cannot).

I will be well prepared and as I've already stated, will treat my rig properly. I came here looking for advice and help, not sarcastic remarks.

I will try the first technique with iso, although I will probably get another insert regardless. Do you torch the SiC red hot then just let it sit? Or scraping required?

I've added the Obsidian insert and Tsunami to my cart- seems I should just spend the little bit more to get a Flat Coil Bundle Pack instead!

Sorry, really no sarcasm, it was serious question. Didn't want to hurt your feelings :peace:

No hurt feelings, it can be hard to detect sarcasm on the Internet sometimes and I assumed you were being sarcastic and asking a rhetorical question, because obviously it is not logical to buy a connoisseur product and not take care of it.

I'm not sure how to further answer your question besides what I've already told you, unless you want to hear graphic stories of what led to a life of debilitating pain. I guess I'll just say that I am only human, and sometimes the pain (even through the therapeutic relief CBD provides) puts me in a position where I would rather just not deal with it in the moment.

If you can get the SiC insert out, torch it until red hot from all angles, it will be good as new. When my insert got stuck I had to set it to 950 for like an hour and then was able to dump it out once cold again.

The insert definitely still has that slight rattle/shifting so it isn't stuck. I will take your advice and torch it red hot. It's been a while since I've had to break out the butane can!

Pretty sure the nipple is where the cutting insert reaches it's stopping point on a lathe when machining it. The nipple is referred to as a "nib" and it is REALLY POOR QUALITY not to remove it. The fact that they seem to vary in size leads me to believe that it was indeed poor machining practices in being the result of it.

CCA should really chime in here to address this. I snagged my bundle because the offer was too good to pass up. Haven't received mine yet but I'm hoping it won't be a factory reject or anything which unfortunately seems to be what has been going on with the heavily discounted Liger bundles.

I'll be sure to post an update when I hear back from them. I was thinking the same thing about the 'nib', but don't know nearly enough about machining to comment. The rest of my set looks clean as far as I can tell..

@lazylightning Did you happen to hit up CCA yet again to figure this one out? :ugh:

I was wondering if anyone here can chime in and confirm that CCA ran a sale around Black Friday and discounted the Ligers quite heavily then as well... for some reason my mind goes back to reading 25% off somewhere in this thread. I'll look to see if I can find it again. Were any of those units problematic as these have been?

@Bullshift yes they had 25% off your entire order for Black Friday. The first 10 to place orders at midnight actually got 50% off the order. They weren't bundles at that time.

I grabbed a 20 with a sapphire insert at that time. No complaints on mine, my insert doesn't wobble or anything, I think my "nib" actually is slightly downward. I'll take some pics when I clean this week.

I can't yet compare taste of the different dishes, but I can vouch for the toughness of the obsidian dish. I dropped it on my terrazzo floors the other day and it survived without damage. I've never dropped anything on these floors that didn't shatter everywhere, so I'm impressed!

I purchased one of the 16mm sale sets (around that time, I think) and just checked the bucket. There is actually an indented place in the center of mine, so it does not affect the insert.

As has been said, just remove the sic, put it somewhere that can take a lot of heat, ad torch it till its red hot......it will be as if it was new, with no scraping, muss or fuss. Ive never seen anything that can survive that when done hot enough and the sic can take more heat that you can most likely produce in a home or shop environment so don't worry about hurting it.

Also again, not really, aside from the polish and a refinement in grain size, there isn't much to get excited about Obsidian over the already amazing six.

Most everyone here prefers some variant of bubble cap over anything CCA has come up with, personally I think the Weirdeer titty cap is the best but really its personal pref and finding one thats made correctly (whatever cap you go with).

@lazylightning Did you happen to hit up CCA yet again to figure this one out? :ugh:

Yes, they finally got back to me yesterday. I decided to just return the 20mm Liger because it had a large nipple in the bucket as well as a large deep scratch on the bucket shield. They are telling me it will be a 10% restocking fee but since I'm returning because of multiple serious defects I will make sure to get a full refund. Heck if we're charging fees maybe I should charge them an inconvenience fee for my time, weeks of waiting and postage to send defective items back.

Apparently the customer service guy is away until the 14th so he says I have to wait until he gets back in order to get my replacement Obsidian insert that I've already been waiting on 10 days.

CCA really knows how to make you feel unimportant to them, even after spending $1800.

Every time I go to pull the trigger on a purchase (hurricane carb cap, obsidian insert, some of the heads, or even the 30mm) I've seen one of these posts and it makes me hesitate on investing more into this thing. If I give someone almost 1000 bucks*, I would expect courtesy...and certainly not a restocking fee that exorbitant. Like, they should have a max if they're going to be chinsey, 10% to a maximum of 20 or 25 dollars. Nickle and diming, but reasonable nickle and diming for a small operation that you can justify to a degree more than what a CCA purchase restock could love totally add up to.

That said I tightened and stretched my coil today and it was a gosh darned world of difference. I've also understood the quartz insert to myself. I like it a lot!!!!

Edit: mine is 2nd hand so I don't have much skin or complaint in this shizzle. Just expressing a highly interested outsiders perspective to dodgy CS for a truly stellar product...When the quality is there it seems.

Thanks for your input- if there is no noticeable efficacy difference between the two I might as well get two SiC dishes to keep one as a backup!

As for the carb cap, are you talking about the one listed here? https://neglassart.com/products/directional-cap-for-therbines-by-wierdeer

What are your thoughts on the XL Directional caps themselves, and also compared to the 30MM compatible bubble caps, both found on the same site? https://neglassart.com/collections/xl-directional-carb-caps

Hey guys  I am excited to now be part of the liger community:rockon:, having purchased the Liger 30mm with the Obsidian insert. I am getting what feel like strong hits at 630 with the Tsunami, but it is hard to twist on the barrel to spread my wax around (which seams to really make the hit much stronger and more flavorful). I see many recommendations on caps, but no reliable retailer for purchase of most of them. Is neglassart OK? Are DM's and emails just the way business is done for custom caps, or is there a established distributor that I could go through with my pay-pal account? Thanks in advance, I can't wait to dial this in with you guys and gals.

The cap i mentioned was one he did as a "special order" for us, I don't think he is doing any more through as he came on and called us children.....

Some folks like the Terptrunk by chadbro but there has been some debate about the angle of the trunk of more recent specimens negatively effecting cloud volume. IMO, I have a newer one and Id rate it below the Tsunami from CCA, but I think its more the airflow and lack of low pressure zone that holds the trunk back, same with the Riptide by Gordo, I haven't tried the ball version yet but the standard cap and the cap heads I think let too much air in.

As Ive said many times, finding the right cap can be an ordeal but once you get everything dialed in, its worth it.

The fact you're still willing to put up with it, albeit likely waning at this point... makes me think the product is a godsend when you finally get it all dialed in. But I want absolutely nothing to do with the company at this point :\

I know you'll get the full refund value but having to go through the motions again and again and again is silly. Now to hear they're just going to leave it up in the air till the 15th is ridiculous as well! I wonder if I will get a reply before then or if I'll just go unanswered.

My (temporary) piece to pair with the Liger showed up in the mail this evening as well. It works oh so well with it, I can't wait to piece it all together later in February :D

the V2 Ligers don't suffer from this, that plus my experiences with my inserts leads me to conclude the V2 buckets were ever so slightly smaller.

Indeed and I am very happy with my 2.0 and my inserts do not wobble around at all.

For $150 I'd also pick up an Auber RDK-300 and 20mm coil so you can use your Liger right away.

Or just get the Auber and I bet you are happy for what....about $145 with the coil???

I agree completely and its very disappointing as Josh's thing has always been touted as "perfectionist".

I received both my Liger Bundles today and also have a small nipple on my 30mm Liger bucket bottom which causes the insert to not sit flush in the bucket. my current 30mm does not have a nipple protruding but instead, a dimple which seems correct.

The inside of the both new 20mm and 30mm bucket where the air intake screws in is scratched and chipped. THe exterior are shiny including the 30mm coil shroud. My first 30mm Liger was perfect minus the coil shroud being bronze and matted. It didnt match which is why i order a new 30mm just to have a shiny silver liger.

The inserts i received looks to be fine with a visual inspection. The 20mm sapphire insert is completely clear as i expected some frost to it. The 30mm Obisdian, #144 is smooth and polished. So far no complaints on the inserts.

I can live with the scratches on the inside of the buckets but the 30mm bucket with with the protruding nipple maybe a deal breaker as i dont want my inserts to teeter back and forth. Its bad enough the inserts wiggle inside the bucket. Now, add teetering to the wiggle and its gotta be a mess. I really dont want to try to dremel the nipple as it may leave nasty scratches that i will be able to see through the sapphire insert which i dont want cuz i got this one for looks.

CCA should have put a disclaimer saying these are factory seconds like how D-Nail is doing with their factory second halos on their site.

I am pretty sure i will keep the 20mm Liger as i can live with that but the 30mm is just upsetting. I guess its time to open a ticket and get the ball rolling. If the pics are not appearing, please let me know.
