Firewood Vaporizer

Anyone notice the announcement for the Firewood 5? Is there any other information out there or is everything still under wraps?

Curious whether there might be an upgrade path for FW4 owners? By that I mean, can the FW4 be converted to FW5 by sending in for modifications? Does anyone know if that has that been the case for any of the other FW upgrades?

My hunch is it is a totally new design that isn't backward compatible, but I'm literally just shooting from the hip.

As a proud and satisfied owner of the FW3 and the FW4, I am stoked to learn about the FW5. That doesn't mean that I'm a sycophant but I am definitely an eager potential customer. Those two vapes remain my favorite go to vapes in nearly any situation.

I'm thinking we might get back to manual. True on demand and instant heat up? We already have instant heat up true on demand style sounds more manual oriented.
It'll be temp controlled but you hold a button like a manual and it turns on to your previously set temp instantly as soon as you press the button.

It'll still use draw sense... It'll heat up to set temp whenever you are holding the button and drawing at the same time (except first couple secs of button hold, when no draw is needed). It will also use draw sense to adjust heater temp based on draw speed (faster = hotter), so it will be much easier to learn because you can use any draw speed you want. Hopefully it can even be used while walking :)

The heater will be more powerful, but more important, the heater and herb chamber configuration are totally changed to better capture waste heat and to use more radiation heating (along with convection).

Also there is going to be a built in 4 or 5 chamber tray to allow rapid reload. Each chamber is about half the size of a fw4 chamber, but you can pack it in pretty tight so more like 3/4 the size. The reason for multiple smaller chambers is that you get more fresh, flavorful draws and a more consistent distribution of cannabinoids with each use (imagine if you use a large chamber and only take a couple draws, then an hour later take a couple more... the first session will give you more low boiling point compounds while the second will give you more high boiling point compounds, at least in theory) Smaller chambers also mean much better airflow. Even when packed tight you won't get clogging like on past fw models.

All these changes combined will mean it is much better for doing a really quick draw or two or microdosing while still being capable of larger or group session because of the quick reload tray.

Sorry, this is a total redesign, but you can use your same batteries and charger.

Will there be a waiting list. This seems like a big step up can’t wait.

I skipped V3 and V4 but what you describe Marc might get me back in line. My only remaining concern is still the draw sensor: will it miss my soft draws from time to time? That would be annoying. And the need to "primer puff" in the V4 was what held me back from getting one.

Otherwise it's fun because I kept repeating lately that we were missing a key parameter in all these on-demand convection vapes we have recently: they all lack a way to measure the air stream speed and thus can only achieve a stable given temperature if the user always draws the exact same way. Did you solve that problem at last? Time will tell!

Too bad there's not really an upgrade path for FW4 owners, but the 5 sounds like a very interesting device. If Hopper Labs don't sort out their stuff by the time the 5 is released, VAS is likely in my case.

Ha ha, my failing Grasshopper is just what led me to my first FW, and w each new GH warranty return my FW3 technique got better. The more-powerful FW4 made that technique MUCH easier, still not GH speeds, tho, but a superior design and interface made it my daily and the GH, fresh w new parts from the 6th (7th?) return, got sold. The FW5 specs sound like another huge improvement, I'll be ordering as soon as it's orderable.

I don't see how any company smaller than Pax or Firefly could afford an upgrade program. Many of the best vapes out right now, like from FW and RBT and Morwood, are made in the 10s or 100s or low 1000s, mostly by one designer w/ limited outsourcing. This keeps prices way down from where they would have to be to support a big company - just look at the numbers sold vs price with those more maintstream vapes to see what I mean, less for more.

Well, I came here to post about finding a good case for my FW4 and see this wonderful news!

I guess maybe I'm in the minority 'cause I like the automatic stuff but I have faith the 5 will be another chapter in my "yes dear I know I already have 5 vapes and I don't technically need another but I really do NEED this one" saga. (Actually, my wife is the best and that conversation has never needed to take place. Guitars, on the other hand...)

My visualization skills are pretty poor so I'm not sure how the 5 is going to work. Does this mean there are no more capsules? 'Cause that's one of the strongest selling points for me. Makes cleaning so much easier. 4 or 5 built in chambers? Is the 5 going to be substantially larger than past models? So many questions! Can't wait for the unveiling.

But until then, has anyone found a good portable protective case for their FW4? I found this but wonder what other solutions people have found.

Marc,

I am more excited for this release than any vape in a long long time! Can't wait to get my order in for one of these on day one!

I am definitely intrigued by the built-in 4 or 5 chamber rapid reloading tray. Do you mean to say that this is built into the actual vaporizer, or will the reloading tray be a separate accessory? I'm hoping that the FW5 will not be significantly larger than the FW4. One of the best features of the FW4 is its ridiculously small size!

Thanks for all of your hard work and for continuing to bring us one great device after another!

So does this mean the FW5 will be moving to a hybrid convection/conduction heating method rather than the pure convection of the FW4?

Are you looking for a hard case?

Is your fw the same size as a Crafty? If so, I can recommend the RYOT case. I think the model is Rat Pacz (or something like that). Smell proof and small

I had forgotten about the Ryot folks. Thanks for the reminder, sir. I was thinking about a hard case, but will give those Ryot cases a good look.

My favorite slim-ish airtight case is this one from Solarforce

https://www.amazon.com/Solarforce-Large-Battery-Case/dp/B0106G4AFI

I have 3 or 4 of these for various vapes. They are PERFECT for the FW4. You can carry FW4 with cooling unit, 3 extra capsule/mouthpiece assemblies, a small stir tool, and a cut-off doob tube. Get yourself an 18650 power bank and hit the road!!!

I cut off those carabiner slots with a dremel to make it shorter. It fits in a jacket pocket better that way.

I have not had great luck with the Ryot cases - mine always stink after a few weeks of use. Just my personal experience.

You won't need to primer puff, but you will want to hold the button for a second or two before drawing, basically the time it takes to exhale and move the vape to your mouth.

No more capsules. All I can say for now is that the herbs go in an external "tray" that slides into the device exposing the multiple chambers one at a time. Don't worry, it will be easier to clean than fw4 (at least in my opinion based on limited use so far).
So does this mean the FW5 will be moving to a hybrid convection/conduction heating method rather than the pure convection of the FW4?
No, not conduction. In general there are 3 methods of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. fw5 will be convection and radiation. A lot of vapes out there, including fw3 and fw4, rely heavily on radiation transfer. I think it is the unsung hero of a lot of vapes and has been far undersold by all but a few vape companies. Part of the reason is that it is hard to measure how much of the heat going into the herbs is via radiation vs. conduction or convection. Kind of by accident, when I was playing with a new capsule design, I started to realize how important radiation transfer can be (basically my experimental capsule design was blocking radiation transfer directly from the coil, causing it to be slow and inefficient). So I dropped the new capsule idea and started playing with different heater and herb chamber configurations and found that a design that is optimized for a combination of convection and radiation is the best. It is the most efficient and allows for much faster heat up times than just convection. With previous fw versions, the first draw was mostly terpenes and great flavor but the best draws were the second and third. With my prototype the first draw is the best. It has everything your herbs have to offer, all at once, and it is because of the instant radiation transfer.

In terms of size, it is pretty close to the size of a fw4 with the cooling unit.

@firewood Is the cool dovetail design of the F4 gone ?

I been aiming to buy a Firewood product for years now but never had the extra cash to just go for it, also I have 4 other vapes and 5 other hobbies :D

and a wife and kids ... so yeah

but this springs tax return is in my favor so wondering if I should get a second hand F4 or a new F5 ?

really just need to see the release and see what you cooked up this time

F4 in my eyes is pretty much the best looking vape out there and I loved the capsule system idea

though I never tried any of them

if I get a second hand F4 are you still offering repairs for them or would you recommend to just wait for the new one ?

looking for a second portable vape to go with my Grasshopper

And thank you, Marc, for all this great info. The FW4 basically drove a stake through the heart of my VAS but now, with this info, I can feel the first stirrings of its resurrection. Can't wait to see what the 5 looks like. (Wonder if we'll be able to get them in the coveted Speed Racer Mach 5 trim. :D)
