ive watched the videos on the site, but cant find any that show how to load the slug. id love to see a video from start to finish. the whole process.
There are videos of the process, start to finish on the first page, first post of this thread. Basically, you weigh out 1 gram, then place the slug face down on some parchment paper, pull out the pusher and stuff the gram of flower into the hole tamping down with the pusher as you go.

I don't have one yet....but I will...

just watched them. i gotta say getting 30% return from a drill press vice is quite impressive. makes me wonder if more pressure would be any benefit at all.

i think ill be getting an OG slug and equipping it with cartridge heaters. good shit!

I don't think additional pressure would do much in the case of the slug.

The plunger only goes so deep and does not bottom out against the vise. It just pushes material into the tiny cavity in the bottom of the slug, so the volume you put into it is more critical. Add volume and you can raise pressure, but overdo it by just a little and you will get blowout- it comes back to cavity size on the bottom... I imagine even if you did have a longer plunger, it would also result in blowout.

Natty has some really good baselines for guidance (1g). Your mileage may vary. Material is critical, go for sticky (correct humidity levels) and not fully dry.

Where would you put the heaters?

I'm not sure about the cartridge heaters BUT if someone wanted to attach a heater...I believe a 30mm Barrel Coil would fit around the smaller Slug .33. Then you could have it all loaded in the vice, ready to start pressing as it gets to temp. Only variable is finding out what temp to set the coil to so the heat transfer is accurate.

As soon as I get my Hex-nail controller in Jan (fingers crossed), I'll give this a shot then if no one has ran with my idea yet.

in the barrel running length wise. parallel to the plunger. was thinking two heaters. one on each side of the plunger. these heaters heat quickly. just a few mins and the slug would be at temp ready to press.

1g slug is 1.5” in diameter. so id say 3/16” or 1/8” cartridge heaters. maybe even 1/4”. not sure the length of the 1g slugs barrel, but there is a cart heater that will fit it. you could even use ceramic soldering iron heaters, but they are more fragile than stainless cartridge heaters.

could control the cart heaters with a nice temp control modual or you could easily use a lighting dimmer to adjust the temp of the cart heaters. then just measure the temp of the slug by clamping a candy thermometer in it where the flower puck would be. once you get find your temp you could keep pressing over and over without needing a torch. and you wouldn’t have to worry about how long to heat the slug anymore. in turn getting more consistent results. just plug it in, set the temp controller to your preferred temp, wait for it to heat, and press away for as long as you like. each press at the exact same temp.

and use an oven mitt or gloves to handle the hot slug. should be able to repack when at pressing temp with no worries.

This is the only reason I have not bought one of these yet. I feel like I have my straightener and c clamp process down and would hate to use a different process with a variable like torch heating to get used to. If there was a way to heat it consistently, I would be all over it.

i will be copping a 1g slug, will have holes drilled in it, and will make it happen. just not sure how soon.

slug costs $70, heaters about $20-30 for both, drill press vice $15-20.

not bad and ill bet it woukd work amazing.

Add a $40 PID controller w/ thermocouple and relay package and one more hole in the slug to thread the thermocouple in and it will be temp controlled :)

Don't think you need "cartridges" ... just one ... put the heater on one side, and the thermocouple on the other ... just let it heat soak for 5-10 mins. first and the temp will be balanced throughout the slug. (just adding to your idea)

oh the thermocouole idea is a good one. in fact... i may do it! lol

i like the idea of the heaters in the slug so they go with it when picked up. all in one neat little package. obviously there would be wires coming from the rear of the slug, but the plunger and spacer should give more than enough clearance. you could always shrink wrap the three leads (heaters and thermocouple) to make it appear its just one cord.

I love how this place is full of ingenious people!
BTW I received my Slug.33 today. Super fast shipping, I was a bit surprised by the 25$ tag but it took just a week from California to Italy while I have packages sent at the end of november for a few bucks less still wandering around so totally worth it.

Just a clarification, if the ID of a 30mm coil is 30mm, then the slug.33 should slide right into the coil as it is 1inch OD (according to @Nattybushdoctor).

I like the idea of it all being in on package as well, but if someone already had everything, they could do this with a 30mm coil, no modifications needed.

Both will be really cool to test and see the results!

The fact that gas is so fast, so easy, so convenient, and so cheap is an awesome way to use your Slug. 100's of customers now, not a single return or complaint. When I hear a fellow Cannabis Connoisseur say he or she is STILL using a hair straightener I get sad. I just hope that if they must do it, they don't let anyone see.

Our new 3 OUNCE unit will be done soon I hope. This unit will be BOTH gas and electric! I can't wait to test it. I am hoping for 20% yields at least., Half once or more of fresh rosin in one squish!

yeah i misspoke... the lil guy is 1.5” in length not diameter. thats my bad. even a 1” would work. yeah a coil on the outside would work as well, but it wont be as easy to handle and repack while its at pressing temp. at least not that i can envision. can you link me to a coil heater like youre referring to?

i think its crazy that the slug is routinely getting more than 20% returns. isnt a goal for high end presses to hope for 20%? this is what makes me want to give the slug a shot. i stopped squishing flowers because i can buy oul cheaper than i can press myself from flowers. 25-30% returns start to level that scale.

I've been getting about 15%, which isn't bad, but as with this stuff, not only does technique play a role, but so does the starting product. I think my process is getting fine-tuned, but the starting material is only going to get so far.

For me, without access to concentrates, this is PERFECT for when I want to do a double-decker in the Flowerpot. I love my flower, but since I got the FP, I was itching to get some concentrates.

EDIT: Guess I may have mis-spoke as well. I thought I saw an option for a 30mm barrel coil but now I'm only seeing the 30mm flat coil.

EDIT2: The flat coil may be fine, just not sure.

Your slug works well without huge amounts of pressure because your flower material is enclosed and compressed into a specific shape in the confines of the reservoir essentially being compressed from all sides rather than flattened out like a pancake. I was told last weekend at the cannabis cup that the larger presses do not go larger than an oz because the more material that is being pressed out the farther the rosin has to flow to get to the outside of the material being squished. The Slug's " Forge " style of compression should allow the user to do very large amounts. POUNDS at a time perhaps.

I give up I've wasted 5 grams now. The herb keeps coming out where the rosin does. Also rosin comes out the other end too. I'm sure it's my fault but I'm going another route now.

If you post of your starting material, and a 1-2 min video of your process, I am sure we could give you some constructive advice.

Have you tried different strains? Some just are no good for pressing no matter what you do.

I had the same thing happening and wasted some gram myself before understanding what the problem was.
In my case the piece of scrap metal I was using as a backing plate was crooked thus not allowing the end of the Slug to sit perfectly flat against the parchment. When tightening my vise I was looking at the plunger to be straight to be sure to keep everything aligned but this left some room for the compressed weed to slide out.

Grifo, I am sorry to hear you are having difficulty figuring out your Slug. I would love to help if I can. Perhaps an OZ of substandard herb to learn with may help.
no Rosin = not enough heat. Never over pack. Never compress too fast. never heat for more than 1:30 (.33) and never heat more than 2 min. ( Deuce) .
I am at the point where I feel like ive done as much as I can video wise. Let me know.
