Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

I posted this on /r/rosin as well

Rock Star Kush, Freeze dried 90m bubble, pressed at 160f for 2.5 min. 60% avg yield.

This is not actually the primo bag from this crop. The trichomes are very small so the 45 and 73 bags are actually higher quality so the 90 and up gets pressed :)

However the freeze dried (vacume oven) process made it all very drysift like. Almost like Moroccan hashish. Brittle/dusty and very light colored compared to regular dried Bubble. It pressed very nice.

I make hash rosin and have gotten a decent yield many many times but this year we grew a 2:! CBD varietal called Pineapple Tonic, clones from Harborside, and I am not getting much of anything to squish out of the hash. The few dabs I got were delicious, reminded me of Life Savers candy. Why is there almost no yield with many grams of hash?

I am new to pressing and have some questions about taste.

I've always loved concentrates, all concentrates, but what I press is not tasting beautiful... in fact, it is not good at all. What can I do to preserve flavor during this process? Everything smells so beautifully aromatic while pressing and heating, but none of the beautiful notes transfer when the material hits the nail.

I am have been trying a number of fire strains, but have only had real success with Glue#4 and Chemdawg (both vape very well in flower form). I had high hopes for wonder woman, but was disappointed and yield was nonexistent. The Chem came out much more stable than the Glue, the chem was snap and pull, and the glue is more a sticky mess.

I've lowered temps on my nail even further, but it still does not taste right...

I wonder if this just is what it is?
Have I simply been spoiled rotten with flavorful live resin and delicious shatter?

from my experience CBD bud has never been great for yields with rosin.

What temps are you squishing at?
I guess I really should bust out the IR gun to really be certain and to provide more info... Difficult to tell temps with the Slug.33.

I am using a cheapo chefs torch.
I put the Big Shot away... it is WAY overkill for this device.

I am going to set the slug aside and do the next squish at 270 on the Kipozi hair iron... it is the only thing I have that will have close to proper temp control.

don't go anywhere near 270. if that's the lowest temp then turn it off and wait a bit until it's closer to 200 and then press for 1.5 - 2 min. If you can get it down to 190ish then press for 2-2.5 min. You can turn it on during the press to maintain heat but above 220 is no good.

A lot of hash is high in plant matter. IMO it goes flower -> hash -> bubble hash -> dry sift/rosin -> distillates.

If you look back somewhere in the thread people do press hash, but it seems to be mostly our European FC'ers and their hash is next level stuff. You're not getting huge returns because there is still a lot of plant matter I think. Higher quality/less plant matter = higher yields.

I should clarify that I mean personally grown and processed IWE or TrimBin kief when I say hash.

I am usually just under 200F but I have tried up to 235ish with this CBD stuff and saw no change to my minimal yield.

When I press cannatonic #4 I only get about 7% returns. Much less than my high thc strains. ~17-20+%

In my case I think it's worth it because it's so effective for pain and inflammation. I vape it straight with good results and when I mix it with other rosins it adds a nice sour cherry taste, and mostly uplifting effects.

I am talking about less than 1% and I cannot make sense of it.

I take it you have much better returns with other varieties?

If so the herb moisture levels makes a big difference. 62% boveda packs do the trick for me.

I squeeze everything between 190F to 200F on the first press then 210-220 on the second. Lower temps help preserve the terpenes.

Yes I do and we are talking fully dried ice water hash.

Does your rosin tend to turn to budder?

I have been making rosin from freshly harvested material (has been drying for about 5 days). The result is beautiful to see, smell and vape. After about 2 days it turns to budder. Still very nice and easy to handle but does anyone else experience this? I ask because I also make rosin from well cured bud (about 6 months) and this remains clear.

I am using a Nugsmasher mini at 220 degrees for anywhere between one and two minutes.

Fresh uncured flower almost always budders.

I prefer it.

Once had a black sap budder out to a pale brown. No effin' clue what happened.

@JCat

I have the same press. Keep an eye on plate alignment. Over time it will warp if pressing around 8t.

Same press, slightly lower temps, but similar results here.
I've even recently had well cured bud (talking nearly 12 month cure on the Skywalker) still budder when left.
I don't think the cold and humidity are helping.

I wish there was an easy way to separate the fats/waxes.

I'm only pressing around 1-2tons for the most part for the quantities I'm doing.

My plates are home made from 1.25" aluminum plate ... so not sure how you have the same ones ... and not sure about 1.25" thick aluminum warping ... maybe I'm not understanding something?

I get a lot of buttering as well. And I also prefer butter as it's easier to handle.

Harder rosin from older buds is good too but it can be hard to work with. It can get as hard as shatter.

You can filter a lot of waxes out with a small micron bag. Pretty easy for me.

Ah, I mean the press itself. But with that pressure I don't think you'll have an issue.
