Discontinued The Grasshopper

HL took a little longer to sort out warranty this time around, but both of mine are cleared for entry now, just have to send the bodies and back-ends as I requested.

I noticed their 'expect a reply' period has increased from 3-5 days to 3-7 business days. So a couple of days of extra waiting was required. Over the holiday period that's still good enough for me.

Might get them back in time for Christmas, never know. Keen to get them back whenever... Moments like these I'm always considering selling a unit and getting a Milaana or Splinter, but usually when the hoppers come back that idea's quickly pushed aside. We'll see what happens this time round.

Ed's TNT has made a couple of GH PFE extenders, I think it's a good way to go. Stylish and functional..

@MoltenTiger why you always have to show up and make my tip look so small? :ugh:

PS
Really love the new clicker on the hopper that is just a single action switch for off and on

No more double clicking to turn it on after it turns it self off

How long dose it take for it to turn itself off?, I just tried mine to see if It had this new button and it stayed on for a 1min 10sec before I Just turned it off myself.

Think mine is doing about 10-15 sec but yours sounds like a special case

Supposed to be 18 seconds I believe
Sounds more like the norm

Think my original one turned off in 10 sec?

hahaha I'm sorry man, I just had to support Ed where I can :p

But you know what they say, long and thin goes too far in, short and thick does the trick.
So I wouldn't worry if I were you, seems like you've sourced a good option, and unfortunately that exotic wood or HT PFE aren't mine to be flaunting anyway.
Does look good though!

I've never experienced the updated clicker, but I have experienced the auto time-out not working.

It's not much of an issue, but it's possible to overheat and kill these things. I'm pretty sure that's what happened after I learned I had no auto shut-off and started leaving it for a long while on blue to 'pre-heat' the chamber and get huge hits.

Can't really go wrong with a lifetime warranty, so either get it fixed now with it's non-problematic issue, or wait for it to eventuate to a proper malfunction and send it away then.

I'd be worried that that eventual problem would just occur after RMA'ing for the shut-off

angry about the 2nd hand selling politics of HL.

you cant sell the units once they are registered.
of course you can, yeah, but the seller has to "renew the warranty" for 45dollars.

now i am stuck with the brilliant but unrealiable units.
I can only afford new/other vapes by selling my old/used ones.

the hopper is in every way peculiar

Really looks to be the perfect addition to the hopper.

And that is a really nice HT Ti piece there too!
You should post a pic of the full set and assembly when you get the chance :brow:

I have a GH since a couple of months but I have never heard of a V.2 Grasshopper. Vaposhop claims they store this new version out in Europe since November 2017. There’s no mention of it in HL official sire but I could have misread.
The question is, a friend of mine is debating if getting a GH.
The info page lists a lot of minor improvements over the first version.
Would you better get a SS refurbished GH for 129€ or a new V2 SS GH for 225€?
https://www.vaposhop.com/vaporizers/pen-vaporizers/grasshopper-vaporizer/
Warranty is one year for the refurbished v1 and 2 for the v2.
Registering the new unit on HL you get lifetime warranty, how does it applies to non Americans customers?

Third question:
I’m reading this from the HL Tips and Tricks page:

3. Take Short, Firm Draws
Other vapes require a slow and steady draw that lasts between 30 and 90 seconds. This type of draw is not ideal for the Grasshopper. The Grasshopper comes equipped with a very powerful 45-watt heater, a microcontroller to monitor temperature in real-time and a very short vapor path. Its design allows for quick and easy vaporization. Your draw should be faster than with other vapes and last 15-20 seconds. Near the end of your draw, click the device off to allow for all the vapor and warm air to be cleared from the chamber. ”

Question: This is insane. Who the hell is able to draw for NINETY seconds? I have pretty big lungs but I don’t think I can draw for more than 30 second. I also got schooled up on this very topic about getting long steady draws and not “short and hard”, and “you have to draw faster than with other vapes” like it says.
Which vapes? Of course the non existent vapes in which you draw for 90 seconds.
When I pulled the GH hard like it says I got wispy vapor and burning lips (and was debating if returning it or not). Maybe I have a GH on the cool side? I feel like I have to do the opposite: draw very slowly, slower than any other vape. Sipping like if it’s a MFLB. That way I get clouds.

Does anyone have any experience similar to mine? I never had flashing blue on the pulls and the vapor is not what it was. I'm almost done with this vape even though I love it. I don't trust it and can't bring it out with me, which is the whole point of the Grasshopper - Easy quick discrete vaping.

All mine have flashed blue but noticed the new ones do it more

@DelaSheck , while I can't speak to your experiences regarding vapor production that seems anemic, I can say that the blue flicker on draws is now the new normal, apparently. I had sent both of my Ti's back at one point a few months ago, and one came back with the "blue flicker on draw", while the other one was (is) steady (of course, flickers on weak battery as it should).

The weird thing is, why would each behave differently if they were both sent back around the same time? (Rhetorical question, of course). But I have noticed this "2nd click" requirement to get the thing to hit well. It's a frustrating thing, especially when I'm doing the "Hey, check out this cool vape" demonstration to a friend. I just think the Hopper will always be a temperamental device.

I have had my Ti GH for a year and a half and it has worked perfectly up until lately when it has definitely cooled off. I can still get vapor, just not the thick vapor I was getting at 4.25 on the temp dial.

Baron, I know you know what you're doing, so this is just to relate and maybe share that when I have this happening, I question the herb dryness and even its potency. I get top shelf, but I've noticed that even from bud to bud, there can be a variance in the cloud production. I'm sure we all know the experience of when you take that draw and you feel the "heated air" but know you're not going to get the cloud. Then we crank it up a notch, go again, and maybe that's better. Sometimes, when that air feels like it's plenty hot enough, I'd predicted with fair odds that I had a sub-par (not dry enough, low-potency crumbs, etc) load in the chamber.

Notwithstanding that, just as often I find that doing that "second click" thing immediately after the sub-par hit suddenly has me choking on a cloud. Go figure.

That does sound insane on surface, but perhaps (like with the Firewood), a (slow) draw of 60 seconds implies an exhale or two in between multiple draws. :2c:

PPN

Volute of Vapor
I have to say things are running smoothly with my Hopper since I had to deal with overheating issues/led sequence small issues. In another hand I use it more like it is designed and rarely kill a bowl hit after hit, battery life seems to improve with time too... is it possible?

Interesting pick up!

I believe this is referring simply to the most up-to-date Grasshopper design.
HL have constantly been adapting it to better deal with the many issues that occurred in the field.
It's been very evident that the prototyping of this device, from hobbyists at the time, was fairly limited.
So, over the course of backers units, to pre-order units and retail product, there have been a bunch of changes.

If I was to speculate, perhaps the timing of recent discussion of new warranty protocols

And this claim from vaposhop
Grasshopper
We now carry the latest and improved version of the Grasshopper vaporizer.

Grasshopper V2 Improvements
This is the latest and improved version of the Grasshopper vaporizer. It was released in Europe in November 2017 and features a large number of both small and bigger improvements in the internals for an even smoother experience. Improvements include:

  • Gold plating on the electrical surfaces reducing the heating in the back and housing
  • Grasshopper battery V2
  • Better Backend Dial action (Smoother)
  • The On/Off button now will work in either position, making use more intuitive
  • Completely redesigned temperature sensor (fully eliminates red/blue flash error)
  • New Heater design for 20% more power and much greater reliablity
  • Decreased draw resistance

Are they a little connected?

That list is pretty interesting, 20% more power, less draw resistance... not bad not bad.

We've seen reports on FC about the absence of the double-click power on thing with newer back-ends.

Perhaps Vaposhop just got new stock after some months of sitting on their old units? V2 to them.

BTW A second hand hopper will get updated with the new components as necessary, just like whoever's transcript is above is getting the good good.

Really the greatest thing is HL's apparent claim of much greater reliability from Nov '17, and how they're still around - which many doubted.

This makes me feel comfortable going in to my 5th device warranty in 2 years (per hopper no less), the first 3 were totally free mind. Back in the day of them sending out replacements.

I'd have no qualms about getting a second-hand hopper, as long as the warranty is considered in the asking price and is considered by the potential buyer.

I'm sitting next to a Sublimator and a VapCap M, so two dead hoppers is nothing much to deal with but it's something still

Any idea wtf this is about:

"The On/Off button now will work in either position, making use more intuitive"

What 'either position" are they talking about?

Anybody know...or did I already know and that brain cell died! LOL

you know how if you leave the grasshopper, it normally shuts off by itself, leaving it in a 'standby' mode.
OG GH's you had to click it 'off' and then click it again 'on'. Two clicks.

New units don't do that, you just click it once and it will turn on.

My hopper was sent back to me in June and mine only needs one click to turn it on or off. I've been using mine ever since with no problems.

I'm still nervous when I turn mine on. Love this vaporizer. The stealth aspect of this unit is a nice thing to have when vaping on the go or you need to be cordless. I have 8 batteries, they will degrade over time depending on the use.

Ah....thank you. I actually don't think I have ever hit the time out on my GH.

Thanks again for the quick response :cheers:
